Lots of Goings and Comings
Thirty years ago, Sherry Smith joined the Holy Rosary staff. Her job has morphed over the years, and now includes everything from marriage preparation and the parish facilities calendar, to donation data entry, the bulletin and staff tech support. At the end of August, she will be retiring—spending more time with her husband who retired this past year, enjoying life as a grandmother, and enjoying not commuting from Kent. In her thirty years she has impacted the lives of many, and for this we are all grateful! Thank you Sherry!
Due to the varied nature of her position, we will likely be splitting up the position. Since this is still fairly new information, and with the short term bulletin print deadline, plans are still not yet final, but we will likely be opening up several new positions this summer. Job positions and advertisements will be finalized hopefully in the next week, and we
will post them when that happens. But in case you might be interested or know someone, they will likely include: Youth Confirmation Coordinator—A part time position responsible for implementing the new 7th grade
Confirmation program, including transition for 7-12th graders this year and next, and creating some other opportunities for ministry to our young people.
Administrative Assistant—A part time position responsible for publishing the weekly bulletin, managing the facilities calendar, data entry and other internal operations.
Marriage Preparation Coordinator—A part time and flexible position serving our 12-18 couples who each year come to the Church seeking the Sacrament of marriage. This individual will work with couples to help prepare them for marriage, building strong foundations and understanding more deeply this vocation of love and service. We have a separate Wedding Coordinator who assists the day of the wedding.
Fr. Dunstan Epalaat arrives Monday from Uganda. He will be here until August 8th. He will include some ministry updates in the bulletin and at Coffee and Donuts one weekend—look for information to come. If you want to have him over for lunch or dinner or wish to set up a time to meet with him. I will be taking my usual summer trip to Idaho with the extended Oakland family later in July—and definitely want to make sure he is taken care of while I am gone. You can also contact the office or speak to him personally to set up a time to meet with him in the offices if you wish.
On July 4th, as we celebrate our nation’s independence, Mass will be at 9AM. Come and join us as we ask God’s blessing on our experiment in freedom, for His wisdom and guidance.
Public Service Announcement #1: If you get an email or text from me or anyone else asking you to purchase some gift cards and email the codes, it is likely a scam (always if it is from me). It is something that has been happening every few months for over a year, hitting many Catholic churches, and others, using information publicly available on websites. ALWAYS look for correspondence to come from official websites—@holyrosaryseattle.org or @holyrosaryws.org. I will never email you from an @yahoo or @gmail personal address. If there is a request for a donation, it should always be through the official website. If you are ever suspicious about a request, please call the office and confirm. If you aren't suspicious about the request, still please call the office and confirm.
Public Service Announcement #2: Please be careful. Last week a woman had her purse robbed by three men in an alley behind her apartment building near Dakota and California. We are upgrading lighting on 42nd for a reason—but the best safety precaution is personal awareness and strength in numbers.
Public Service Announcement #3: This week the City of Seattle approved the creation of a Restricted Parking Zone around the Junction in West Seattle. Holy Rosary’s campus is included as the edge of this zone. This means that all street parking will be 2-hours or less Monday-Saturday 7AM-6PM, unless you live in the zone and have a parking pass. There will be some areas that are exceptions. It will be very important to pay attention to the signage—meter maids are frequent visitors to the area. It will be implemented this fall, and more information will be forthcoming and can already be found on local news sites.
Public Service Announcement #4: We will be getting new neighbors. The old West Seattle Christian school across the street from the church sold this spring. A new apartment building has been proposed with 5 stories, 72 microapartments, five live-work apartments, and parking for 36 vehicles, including in an underground garage. As the project progresses we will keep you updated. Clothesline, which was in this building until recently, moved into another building on their campus off of 41st Avenue.

A weekly tip on Caring for Our Common Home When getting set for a summer road trip, be sure to check that your vehicle’s tires are properly inflated. Look for a label somewhere on your vehicle (like a doorjamb) or check the owner’s manual. Tires might list a higher maximum inflation figure, but the one listed on your vehicle will ensure better fuel mileage and handling, and greater safety. Check the tire pressure once a month to be sure you are getting the best mileage, which helps to reduce carbon emissions.
Saint of the Week Every week, we highlight a particular saint. This
week, we remember St. Thomas the Apostle. Often
called “doubting Thomas” because he would not
believe in Jesus’ resurrection unless he saw Our Lord’s
hands and side, he also played an important role earlier
in the Gospel: when Jesus returned to Jerusalem,
knowing that the leadership wanted to kill him,
Thomas said, “Let us also go
to die with him.” After
Pentecost, Thomas carried the
Gospel east, into India. Some
legends tell of him visiting
Indonesia and even Paraguay.
We celebrate his feast on July
3, when he was martyred in
Chennai.

A True Inspiration – Holy Rosary’s
Shoulder to Shoulder Ministry
People often say that giving is better than receiving.
We have seen and felt the truth of this so many times
through Holy Rosary’s Shoulder To Shoulder
ministry. All are welcome to participate in this
inspiring group which organizes help for our fellow
parishioners. If you are sick or recovering from an
injury, “S2S” members can mow your lawn or take
you to the doctor. New parents can receive meals for
a few weeks while they get situated. We’ve helped
parishioners move furniture and fix computers. Our
Golden Outreach group makes and delivers lasagna
dinners to older parishioners. The list goes on and
on. It’s plain old-fashioned helping a neighbor in
need.
It’s great to see these needs fulfilled and to receive the
appreciation of those we have helped, but the best
part is experiencing the generosity, the willingness to
help and the gift of community as we join together
for a project. The best part is the joy on the faces of
the “givers.” One of our biggest projects is currently
underway - fixing up the basement of the Carmelite
Sisters’ home. Parishioners, children of all ages,
retirees, moms, dads, neighbors and the Sisters have
gathered to create a beautiful, updated work space
from a crowded storage room. We are so grateful to
the Sisters for giving us this chance to have the full
S2S experience.
We invite you, and your friends and family, to join us
in the S2S experience. Please help us spread this
ministry and help more people. You can share your
time, talent and resources, plus see what we’re
working on by joining the Holy Rosary Shoulder to
Shoulder Group at https://app.letsgroopit.com/

[email protected] or calling the parish
office at 206-935-8353. If you can donate to support
our efforts, please send donations to the Holy Rosary
parish office. Stand with us, Shoulder to Shoulder!
