THE INEXPRESSIBLE MYSTERY The God of the universe is mysterious. Science has not been able to solve the mystery of how the universe came into being or explain exactly what continues to give it creative energy and masterful design. No reli-gion asserts that it has found words to name fully the ineffable mystery of God, for no matter what name we use, God always transcends our limited ability to un-derstand. God is a mystery to be believed, not known. And yet, we Christians believe that our name for God best expresses that inexpressible mystery: God is the Most Holy Trinity of three persons united in a com-munion of love, pouring forth that creative, saving, sanctifying love into the world. Today’s scriptures cele-brate the mystery of the Trinity and give us clues for living that mystery in our lives.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It is often heard that today’s observance is an “idea feast,” and that it is somewhat difficult to grasp its meaning. Other great solemnities, such as Christmas and Easter, have an easily grasped core. Yet, even though the Trinity is at the heart of our faith, firmly declared in the Creed since the Council of Nicea in 325, we are used to having people shrug and say, “Well, it’s a mystery.” Perhaps it is more helpful to think of this as a “relationship feast,” since it unveils our deepest identity. Dorothy Day was a great social reformer, pacifist, and ardent lover of the Trinity. When people told her that she would certainly be can-onized one day (the process is indeed underway), she protested dismissively by remarking that people were raising a fuss just because she was not afraid to talk about God. She loved the Trinity, and treasured the tra-ditional icon for the feast, also known as “The Hospi-tality of Abraham,” depicting the three angelic beings seated at a table tilted toward the viewer and laden with bread and wine. For her, the Trinity revealed the heart of the Catholic life, three C’s if you will: community, communication, and communion. That was not an “idea” for her, but what it means to be created in the image of the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Toda devoción mariana debe seguir los pasos de Cristo. Y todo lo que decimos acerca de María deberíamos decirlo de nosotros como Iglesia, porque ella es nuestra madre, hermana y modelo. Si Jesús es el Hijo de Dios, María y nosotros también somos hijos e hijas de Dios. Si Jesús tiene un Sagrado Corazón que arde por amor al humano, María tiene un corazón inmaculado que arde con ese mismo amor. ¿Y nosotros? La devoción al Inmaculado Corazón de María fue pro-movida por el Papa Pío XII en 1942, durante la Segun-da Guerra Mundial. El Papa pidió a María tres gracias para los fieles en Cristo: amor a la pureza, práctica de la vida cristiana y celo apostólico. De esta manera nuestro corazón puede llegar a ser como el de ella. El corazón inmaculado de María es un corazón que no tiene mancha de pecado. Es un corazón que imita el Sagrado Corazón de su Hijo y Dios, Jesús. Es recuerdo de lo que nuestros corazones pueden ser. Es invitación a que nos vayamos purificando y creciendo en amor ardiente por el prójimo.

GLORIA Y ALABANZA POR SIEMPRE
Cuando Moisés subió al monte Sinaí, Dios le hizo la revelación más extraordinaria, Dios le reveló su nom-bre: "Señor, Señor, Dios compasivo y misericordio-so" (Éxodo 34:6). En el Antiguo Testamento, estamos acostumbrados a asumir que "Señor, Dios" indica sola-mente a Dios Padre. Pero en la retrospectiva con la que vemos a estas lecturas, podemos ver que el título inclu-ye a las tres personas de la Santísima Trinidad. Nunca ha habido alguna separación de las tres personas en un solo Dios, y aun cuando solo se mencione a una de las personas de la Santísima Trinidad, se entiende que las tres están presentes. Jesús enseñó muchas veces que él y el Padre son uno, y que el Espíritu Santo vendría a nosotros y nos haría recordar muchos eventos. Creemos en Dios, creador de todo lo que existe; el Hijo, redentor de la vida y dador de la vida eterna, y el Espíritu Santo, inspiración de los profetas y amante de toda la humani-dad, la sabiduría sagrada, que nos inspira a comprender todas las cosas santas.
DIOS AMÓ TANTO AL MUNDO
Cuando escuchamos en el versículo constantemente citado del Evangelio de Juan 3:16 "Porque tanto amó Dios al mundo, que entregó a su Unigénito, para que todo el que cree en él no perezca, sino que tenga vida eterna", empezamos a ver como el lenguaje que expresa el envío del Hijo es limitado para expresar la unidad de la Santísima Trinidad. Esta limitación del lenguaje ante la presencia del misterio de la Santísima Trinidad es lo que lo hace difícil de explicar y comprender. Entonces, ¿cómo podemos responder cuando vemos una referencia a "Dios"? Podemos esforzarnos en re-cordar que Dios son tres personas, no una sola como nosotros, y un solo ser. Nuestra mejor respuesta es ala-bar a la Santísima Trinidad. "Gloria al Padre y al Hijo y al Espíritu Santo; a Dios quien fue, quien es y quien será." Y nosotros podemos bendecirnos uno al otro cuando rezamos con san Pablo "La gracia del Señor Jesucristo, el amor de Dios y la comunión del Espíritu Santo estén siempre con todos ustedes" (2 corintios 13:13).
