THE GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION

Providing Care to Christians in the Holy Land

Every year on Good Friday, a collection is taken up in every Catholic church to

support the people and places of the Holy Land.

(This year Holy Redeemer collected a very generous R21 107.30)

Christians of the Holy Land rely heavily on the help that comes to them during

this special moment of the year.

The Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land have the unique responsibility of

caring for the Holy Places as well as caring for the Christians living in the Holy

Land. It is important that we care for the Christians living in the Holy Land in

order to maintain a Christian presence in a land that is filled with a majority Jew-

ish and Islamic population.

The Good Friday Collection is applied to these programs below:

Faith, Memory & Culture – The Holy Places

Holy Land Franciscans staff and maintain the Holy places and shrines. This ena-

bles those who live in the Holy Land and those who visit to deepen their faith and

their spiritual and cultural connection to Salvation history.

Social & Charitable Activities

In order to assist Christians to remain in the Holy Land, including the poor and

young couples, the Custody builds thousands of residential units. Additionally,

they build senior care facilities. Medical assistance is provided for the needy.

Educational & Scientific Activities

The Franciscans operate and support schools open to all, regardless of religion or

nationality. They provide scholarships for students to prepare them to get jobs

and remain in the Holy Land as part of living Catholic communities. Funds are dis-

tributed to young men studying to become Franciscan priests or brothers. Finally,

Franciscan archaeologists pursue ongoing research at the Holy Places discovering

historical artifacts.

Pastoral Activities

The Franciscans provide pastoral care in 29 parishes in the Holy Land offering

Worship, Christian Formation, youth and family programs.

Liturgical, Ecumenical and Communications Programs

The Franciscan Media Center tells the story of the Holy Land through multimedia

distributed throughout the world in more than seven languages. The friars organ-

ize Liturgical Celebrations for the local Christians and Pilgrims and share with

other Christian communities in the Holy Land in ongoing Ecumenical cooperation.

A WORD FROM YOUR PARISH PRIEST

This was my first time to experience the whole of the Holy Week liturgy here

at Holy Redeemer Church. I was personally deeply touched by everything that

took place, not simply the vast numbers of parishioners who attended our ser-

vices but also by the very evident devotion and grace shown by so many people

throughout the week. It was indeed a privilege for me, as your new parish

priest, to celebrate the various liturgies and to find myself deeply moved by the

beauty of our Holy Week liturgy and its significance for us all.

I just wanted to highlight some of the features of our Holy Week that meant a

lot to me. The first was the choice of having the newly formed young adults

group to be our representatives for the ceremony of the washing of the feet at

the Mass of the Lord's Supper. I know that each of them was moved by this

ceremony, and for me it served to highlight to all the parish that our young

adults are a vital part of our community.

A second highlight for me was that at the Good Friday liturgy our Redemptorist

community were the ones who took part in the veneration of the Cross and

shared in the distribution of Holy Communion. This was meant to indicate to the

whole parish that this parish is blessed and largely sustained by the whole Re-

demptorist community that serves us all in so many ways.

The third highlight was that at the joyful celebration of the Easter Vigil we

were able to receive so many people into full communion with the Catholic

Church. I am sure that it was a moment in life that they will never forget. My

prayer for them is that they will continue to grow in the love of God and in their

service to their brothers and sisters at Holy Redeemer.

I would like to express a personal word of thanks to the many people who went

out of their way to comment on the spiritual and moving way our Holy Week ser-

vices were conducted. But, on behalf of the parish, there are so many others

who ought to be thanked for their contribution to the quality of our liturgies.

First and foremost I would like to thank all the sacristans who gave up so much

time and put so much effort into preparing the Church for each service during

the whole week. Our sacristans are often the unsung heroes of our parish,

working behind the scenes and in all humility. The same holds true for those who

clean the Church and those involved in decorating the Church with beautiful

Easter flowers. (continued next page)

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

For your weekly adoration consider spending time in prayer, reflection or meditation in the Chapel.

Adorers are few, therefore please con-sider adding your name to a vacant spot on the adoration schedule in the Church porch.

(A WORD FROM YOUR PARISH PRIEST - continued)

A special word of thanks must also go to our Altar servers. They were remarka-

bly dignified in all that they did, and were able to help me in so many ways as I

experienced Holy Week here for the first time.

Thanks too to our readers, to all those involved in the music and to anyone else

who contributed to making our liturgies experiences of spiritual depth and

beauty.

Finally, on behalf of our Redemptorist Community, I would like to thank all of

you for your kind and generous Easter offering to us. May we all continue to be

blessed with the joy of Our Risen Redeemer.

Prayers as a Parish Community

Join our ‘virtual’ prayer group, praying for the intentions of Parishioners and

Pope Francis from their homes. What a great way to contribute your time to sup-

port others in need.

This week's intention:

We pray for all Christians currently being persecuted for their faith. May

they place their trust in the love of the Risen Saviour.

Finance update:

As at 28th February we have survived the years challenges well. Our income is

estimated to end the year around R20k higher than budget and our expenses

some R30k below forecast. This has reduced our shortfall of running expenses

over collections to around -R75k, down from the budget best of -R141k.

Fund raising has been very generous and allowed us to progress with the Garden

of Remembrance project which is near completion. The owing on this is around

R70 000 still.

Aside from the Garden we have also built extra rooms in the Parish Centre for

Ministries and new cupboards for the catechists essentials, as well as installing

additional emergency lights in the hall.

Details are available in the porch.

Working together by sharing time and talent to build our Parish and create op-

portunities for worship for all as a vibrant and welcoming expression of our

Catholic Faith.

It’s your Parish, join in, be part of the action.

To share your Time, Talent or Treasure within your Parish Community step forward and contact the office 021 712 2210 with your contribution of help.
