THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 28, 2009

You changed my mourning into dancing; O LORD, my God, forever will I give you thanks. — Psalm 30:13

PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION "Let us make sure that none of God’s children ever feels alone.” - Pope Benedict XVI In September of 2006, Pope Benedict XVI gave a homily in which he explained that those who are baptized create one family of believers who are never alone. The Pe-ter’s Pence Collection unites us in solidarity to the Holy See and its works of charity to those in need. Your generosity allows the Pope to respond to our suffering brothers and sisters with promptness, love, and compassion, so God’s people will not feel alone in their time of misfortune. The Peter’s Pence Collection derives its name from an ancient custom. In ninth-century England. King Alfred the Great collected money – “pence” or pennies – from landowners as financial support for the Pope. Today, the Peter’s Pence Collection supports the Pope’s philanthropy by giving the Holy Father the means to provide emergency assistance to those in need because of natural disaster, war, oppression, and disease. Your generosity in this week-end’s collection is greatly appreciated by the Holy Father.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — God did not make death, nor does God rejoice in the destruction of the living (Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24). Psalm — I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30). Second Reading — Your abundance should supply the needs of the others (2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15). Gospel — Your faith has saved you (Mark 5:21-43 [21-24, 35b-43]).

Becoming a Catechist You have been called to become a catechist! What an awesome call and responsibility! You may be feeling very un-prepared, but don't worry. God, who called you, will give you all you need to be a success. "Catechesis is nothing other than the process of trans-mitting the Gospel, as the community has received it, under-stands it, celebrates it, lives it, and communicates it in many ways. In short, your task is nothing less than to "know Christ and to make Christ known". To know Christ, you must spend quality time in Scripture reading and prayer. Time spent in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament will nourish your own per-sonal relationship with Christ. You should also take formation classes that are available to the catechist so that you may know how to teach only authentic Church teachings. As you respond to the ministerial call that comes from the Lord, you must be willing not only to catechize others, but also to engage in your own continued Christian formation. The sacraments are encounters with Christ, and if you want to deeper, closer, ever-growing relationship with Christ, you should receive them often. It is through the sacraments that we are nourished and strengthened for the journey. We get to know Christ better through each encounter, especially when we acknowledge our need to be forgiven through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Let us as catechists also turn to the Blessed Virgin Mary, who saw her Son grow in wisdom, age, and grace, and ask her to intercede for us. Let us look to her for the spiri-tual model for carrying out and strengthening the renewal of all catechists in faith, hope, and love. To make Christ known is the second part of the task of the catechist. Here we are called to be a witness, to tell our personal story of how we have come to know Christ and the power given to us through his resurrection. St. Paul said, "… I have become all things to all peo-ple, that I might by all means save some." (1Cor 9:22) As cate-chists we must keep this in mind. The whole concern of doc-trine and its teaching must be in relation to the love that never ends. Whether something is proposed for belief, for hope, or for action, the love of our Lord must always be made accessi-ble. Jesus told us to "love one another as I have loved you." (Jn 15:12) The Catechism states: "This love implies an effective offering of oneself, by his example." (CCC 459) This is our main purpose as catechists. You have been called to a ministry of service through which Christ continues his work of mercy and salvation in the world. You are to go and spread the Good News of God's un-conditional love. The U.S. Bishops wrote in their statement, In Support of Catechetical Ministry: "Finally, because the need for well-prepared catechists is so great, we will work to call forth and recruit qualified people to this vital ministry. The nurture we offer our current catechists will contribute to this effort. We encourage all to pray for them and for their minis-try. Developing fulfilled, responsible, and dynamic catechists, working enthusiastically and joyfully in the tasks assigned to them, is the best way to promote other vocations (cf. GC, no. 17). As you assist the next generation in getting to know Christ and helping them make Christ known to others, may you make the world a better place.

CATECHISM CORNER #38 by Jerry Back Have you ever been superstitious about something? I know I have been in the past occasionally, but now try to avoid such acts and thoughts. The fear of the number 13 is a common superstition in Western cul-tures. The strong avoidance of the number 4 is common among Chinese, Korean and Japanese cultures, as well (the number 4 in each of these languages is associated with similar sounding words about death). I have even heard of some Catholics burying a St. Joseph statue up-side down in the front yard in order to help sell a house! I know the real estate market has been challeng-ing the past couple of years, but everything about that visual just feels wrong. Now, I understand that asking for any saint's intercession to help us with our various petitions to God is per-fectly fine (and even encouraged); however, from what I've researched, burying a statue of St. Joseph upside down is most likely just a plain, old superstition and should not be done. All of these superstitions are not only irrational, they can be spiritually unhealthy, as well. The Catechism speaks to superstition in the section that deals with our Life in Christ--specifically in the area of the First Commandment, in the part of "You Shall Have No Other Gods Before Me." Question: What is superstition? Answer from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (2111, 2110, 2138): 2111 Superstition is the deviation of religious feeling and of the practices this feeling imposes. It can even affect the worship we offer the true God, e.g., when one attrib-utes an importance in some way magical to certain prac-tices otherwise lawful or necessary. To attribute the effi-cacy of prayers or of sacramental signs to their mere ex-ternal performance, apart from the interior dispositions that they demand, is to fall into superstition. 2110 The first commandment forbids honoring gods other than the one Lord who has revealed himself to his people. It proscribes superstition and irreligion. Supersti-tion in some sense represents a perverse excess of relig-ion; irreligion is the vice contrary by defect to the virtue of religion. 2138 Superstition is a departure from the worship that we give to the true God. It is manifested in idolatry, as well as in various forms of divination and magic.

“I’M PRAYING FOR YOU TO BE A PRIEST” On the eve of his priestly ordination at 56, Mike Quinn is a late vocation by anyone's definition. But listen to Quinn describe his spiritual path and it is clear the founda-tions of his calling were set early in life. The key element seems to have been that he grew up in an environment where he knew priests who were good men and who did good work. Back in the ‘90’s, Mike Quinn was developing into an active Catholic. He began to feel a call to enter the Di-aconate. He saw himself retiring from his job and serving as a deacon in his later years. But two encounters in 1996 pointed him in another direction. Father Sarsfield Sullivan of Butte, Montana, Quinn's father's second cousin, was an occasional house guest. A remark he made on one visit seemed to foreshadow Quinn's path: "He said, ‘You know, I'm praying for you to be a priest." The second encounter, Quinn told Bishop Patrick J. McGrath of his plans to become a deacon and his deci-sion not to remarry. The accountant, at this time, was bring-ing his dating career to a close. The bishop put the pieces together and came back with: "Why don't you apply for the priesthood?" Quinn responded with litany of reasons why that was a bad idea. The bishop listened and let his answer hang in the air: "Why don't you just let God take this one." And so he did. For the complete story, please log on to http://deacbench.blogspot.com/2009/05/im-praying-for-you-to-be-priest.html
