MOVIE NIGHT

This month’s movie night will be on Thursday, May 31, 2007, at 7:00 to 9:00 PM in the Flanagan Center. The fea-ture film is a real treat! Nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, “Chocolat” is a beautiful and captivating comedy. Nobody could have imagined the impact that the striking Vianne (Juliette Binoche) would make when she arrived in a tranquil, old-fashioned French town. In her very unusual chocolate shop, Vianne begins to create mouth-watering confections that almost magicallt inspire the straitlaced villagers to abandon themselves to temptation and happiness! The movie also stars Johnny Depp and Judi Dench. Come…bring your favorite choco-late snacks to share…hot cocoa will be provided.

MESSAGE OF THE HOLY FATHER BENEDICT XVI FOR THE 41st WORLD COMMUNICATIONS DAY

Theme: "Children and the Media: A Challenge for Education"

May 20, 2007

Media education should be positive. Children exposed to what is aesthetically and morally excellent are helped to develop appreciation, prudence and the skills of discernment. Here it is important to recognize the fundamental value of parents’ ex-ample and the benefits of introducing young people to children's classics in literature, to the fine arts and to uplifting music. While popular literature will always have its place in culture, the temptation to sensationalize should not be passively accepted in places of learning. Beauty, a kind of mirror of the divine, inspires and vivifies young hearts and minds, while ugliness and coarseness have a depressing impact on attitudes and behaviour.

Like education in general, media education requires formation in the exercise of freedom. This is a demanding task. So often freedom is presented as a relentless search for pleasure or new experiences. Yet this is a condemnation not a liberation! True freedom could never condemn the individual – especially a child – to an insatiable quest for novelty. In the light of truth, authentic freedom is experienced as a definitive response to God’s ‘yes’ to humanity, calling us to choose, not indiscrimi-nately but deliberately, all that is good, true and beautiful. Parents, then, as the guardians of that freedom, while gradually giving their children greater freedom, introduce them to the profound joy of life (cf. Address to the Fifth World Meeting of Fami-lies, Valencia, 8 July 2006).

3. This heartfelt wish of parents and teachers to educate children in the ways of beauty, truth and goodness can be supported by the media industry only to the extent that it promotes fundamental human dignity, the true value of marriage and family life, and the positive achievements and goals of humanity. Thus, the need for the media to be committed to effective forma-tion and ethical standards is viewed with particular interest and even urgency not only by parents and teachers but by all who have a sense of civic responsibility.

While affirming the belief that many people involved in social communications want to do what is right (cf. Pontifical Coun-cil for Social Communications, Ethics in Communications, 4), we must also recognize that those who work in this field confront "special psychological pressures and ethical dilemmas" (Aetatis Novae, 19) which at times see commercial competitiveness compelling communicators to lower standards. Any trend to produce programmes and products - including animated films and video games - which in the name of entertainment exalt violence and portray anti-social behaviour or the trivialization of human sexuality is a perversion, all the more repulsive when these programmes are directed at children and adolescents. How could one explain this ‘entertainment’ to the countless innocent young people who actually suffer violence, exploitation and abuse? In this regard, all would do well to reflect on the contrast between Christ who “put his arms around [the children] laid his hands on them and gave them his blessing” (Mk 10:16) and the one who “leads astray … these little ones” for whom "it would be better … if a millstone were hung round his neck" (Lk 17:2). Again I appeal to the leaders of the media industry to educate and encourage producers to safeguard the common good, to uphold the truth, to protect individual human dignity and promote respect for the needs of the family.

4. The Church herself, in the light of the message of salvation entrusted to her, is also a teacher of humanity and welcomes the opportunity to offer assistance to parents, educators, communicators, and young people. Her own parish and school pro-grammes should be in the forefront of media education today. Above all, the Church desires to share a vision of human dig-nity that is central to all worthy human communication. "Seeing with the eyes of Christ, I can give to others much more than their outward necessities; I can give them the look of love which they crave" (Deus Caritas Est, 18).

Pentecost Sunday COME, HOLY SPIRIT, COME

Many times in the Hebrew scriptures we see God coming to earth as a mighty wind. So when we hear of the mighty wind filling the house in Acts today, we know with-out being told that God is there, acting among the disciples. God fills them, and us, with the Holy Spirit. The disciples are able to preach the Good News to all the peoples of the earth, gathered there symbolically in Jerusalem. God wants the word to spread beyond the Mediterranean, eventually all the way to the Arctic Sea!

And the word is unity. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we are all one in Christ. There are different gifts given to each member of the body, but each gift is a mani-festation of the Spirit. Each person, each culture of people has different gifts. That’s what makes the body of Christ strong. Let us take care never to suppress another’s gifts, even though we might not understand them. To suppress a gift would give injury to the body of Christ.

UNITED IN LOVE All throughout this Easter season, we have heard

about the radical love Jesus calls us to share in this world. God gives us the Spirit so that we humans have the strength to love as Jesus loved. This love that doesn’t discriminate, that celebrates the diverse gifts of God’s creation, this is the love that we have the power to share. To love as Christ loves, to act as Jesus did, is something you and I can do because we are filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. We can be people of peace, we can feed the hungry, clothe the naked. We can choose not to go to war. We can choose to lift up the gifts of those different from us. We are Chris-tians—we are people of love. Today’s Readings:

Vigil: Genesis 11:1–9 or Exodus 19:3–8a, 16–20b or Ezekiel 37:1–14 or Joel 3:1–5; Psalm 104:1–2,

24, 35, 27–28, 29, 30; Romans 8:22–27; John 7:37–39 Day: Acts 2:1–11; Psalm 104:1, 24, 29–31, 34; 1 Corinthians
