17th Sunday of Ordinary

Time July 29, 2018

Reading I: 2 Kings 4:42-44 Responsorial Psalm: 145:10-11,15-16,17-18 Reading II: Ephesians 4:1-6 Gospel: John 6:1-15

Theme: “When the people saw the sign he had done, they said,

‘This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world’” (Gospel). Today’s Gospel presents one of the seven signs in John’s gospel. The seven signs (or some call them miracles) are: Changing water into wine at the wedding at Cana (Jn 2:1-11); Healing the royal official’s son (Jn 4:46-54); Healing the paralyzed man at the pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem (Jn 5:1-15); Feeding the 5,000 (Jn 6:5-14); Walking on water (Jn 6:16-21); Healing the man born blind (Jn 9:1-7); and Raising Lazarus from the dead (Jn 11:1-45). In Greek, sign is “sémeion” and in Latin “signum,” from which we derived the words signal, insignia, and signature. Scripture scholar Fr. Raymond Brown says, “that the book of signs is the part of the Gospel where the Word reveals himself to the world and to his own …” Hence, let us be attentive to how the Lord revealed and made known to us the wondrous works of God in these signs and in the personal and daily signs in our lives. In the Gospel, Philip’s answer to the Lord is like ours whenever we are confronted with the same situation. "Two hundred days' wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little." We become practical and realistic in our assessment. Perhaps nothing is wrong with that approach until you include God. When you do not include God, you indeed miss the point of life and its benefits. When one is with God, there is no need to worry and assess anything. God provides and provides abundantly. The end result is amazing and profound praise and glory is given to God. “This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.” Let us pray: Lord increase and strengthen our faith in you. May we never doubt your generosity and love. May we speak of your kindness and providence to all we meet, Amen. Please include me and the rest of the pilgrims who will be on journey to Rome and Holy Land starting July 30 thru August 9, 2018. You will all be in my petitions and prayers in this visit to the Holy sites. In my absence, Fr. Leroy Lachica, Fr. Roy Quioque, CICM, Fr. Alejandro de Jesus, OSB, Msgr. Pat Cronin, and Fr. Maury Smith, OFM are covering when available.

Pastoral Reflection By David Pedraza, Pastoral Council Member

The episodes involving Elisha in the first reading, and Jesus in the Gospel both focus on a miraculous feeding of a multitude. They clearly set the stage for the Bread of Life passage that follows John’s Gospel. The feeding of thousands is an event that can be found in all four Gospels. In all four, Jesus is being followed by the crowd. It seems as if he was trying to get away and needed to have some reflection time. I picture Jesus as exhausted but He does not become irritable as we might become when we are exhausted. Both Mark and Matthew’s narratives of the same Gospel event are directly preceded by an account of the death of Jesus’ cousin, John the Baptist. If we were in Jesus’ place, we would feel shock, depression and worry our own future. We would definitely require some downtime and reflection.

I feel the truly impressive part of the Gospel account is that Jesus does not give up. He addresses the needs of those around him. My take away from today’s action is twofold. First, we can trust in the Lord, even in hard times. Second, we have a model for our own actions in a Messiah who continues to serve those around him – no matter what. My prayer today is for the strength that we need to respond faithfully to those around us in times of our own pain and exhaustion.

Heavenly Father, I know the weariness that long stretches of hard work can cause. I am also aware of the state of lethargy that times of despair can bring. Thank you for the model of Your Son carrying on in hard times. In the moments when I am tired, help me to avoid criticizing and judging. I ask for a second wind on days when I am hurt and down. I ask that fatigue does not displace the joy and meaning that flows from service to others, Amen.

Holy Name Catholic Church Archdiocese Capital Campaign Did you Know? Parish Fact We have 2677 Registered Parishioners. Only 1/3 of our Parishioners are active, 892. Capital Campaign Goal: $513,000.00 40% Share to Holy Name: $205,200.00 Proceeds for Multi-Purpose Building Phase #1 Classrooms, Outreach Ministry, CYO & Meeting Room Phase #2 Gymnasium

HOW DO WE ATTAIN OUR GOAL?

If we take the active families (892) and divide into our Campaign Goal, the average pledge per family would be $576.00. $513,000.00 divided by 892 families = $576.00

This Campaign is a 3 Year Family Pledge…

3 year pledge would break it down to $16.00 dollars per month, per family. $576.00 divided by 36 months = $16.00 If you want to break it down by the week it would be $3.69 dollars. $576.00 divided by 156 weeks = $3.69

By explaining this formula, Parishioners will realize that this pledge is attainable and can be met.

“For it is in Giving, that we Receive” (St. Francis of Assisi). ______________________________________________________________________ ¿Sabías? Hecho Parroquial Tenemos 2677 parroquianos registrados.
