Twenty-Sixth Sunday of

Ordinary Time (A) September 27, 2020

Reading I: Ezekiel 18:25-28 R e s p o n s o r i a l P s a l m : 119:57,72,76-77,127-128,129-130 Reading II: Philippians 2:1-11 or 2:1-5 Gospel: Matthew 21:28-32

Theme: “He came to the first and said, 'Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.' He said in reply, 'I will not’” (Gospel).

In one of his homilies Pope Francis says, “Christians are not licensed ‘inspectors of other people’s lives,’ but rather disciples who reach out to others, assuring them of God’s love and welcoming them into the community.” We easily fall into the trap of judging people especially when they are too different from us. We are all guilty of judging and make them feel unwelcome or do not belong. In a community where there is great divide and animosity, it always leads to violence. As Christians, we bear the heart of Jesus Christ that sees beyond appearance. “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

Labeling and judging people goes contrary to the principle of charity. Our outer garments and differences should not make us dislike, hurt, or hate each other. The truth is that we are made in the image and likeness of God. It is a sin to distort this truth. The Gospel today challenges us to look deeper into our hearts. Jesus poses the question, “Which of the two did his father's will?" Like the Pharisees and Scribes, we know the answer but often hard to do in real life. Pharisaic attitude is not just superiority complex problem but also a faith malfunction. “Examine me, O Lord, and try me; test my mind and my heart,” says the Psalmist (26:2).

“Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped” (Philippians 2:5). As God sees us so we ought see each other. We will not be unkind and judgmental to others. We need God’s mercy for we are all sinners.

Let us pray: God our Father, teach us to be sincere and true. Lord Jesus Christ, make us humble and kind. Holy Spirit inspire to love from the heart, Amen.

Pastoral Reflection By Alex Avilez, Pastoral Council Member

Brothers and Sisters, today’s Gospel of MT 21:28-32 talks about two sons who were told to go work in the vineyard. The first son said he wasn’t but changed his mind and went. The second son said he would but didn’t. The first son did his father’s will, the second son didn’t. When our Lord calls on us to do his will, like the sons, some of us do and some don’t. If you believe in our Lord you will do His will. His will is His plan for us. We have to believe in His will. It has been our plan since we were born. When you believe, like the prostitute and the tax collectors did, and were received in Heaven, believe in His will, and be received into Heaven. Amen

Holy Name Church Attendance Procedures

We ask for Christian patience and understanding during these difficult and challenging times. It is imperative that each of us strictly abide by these procedures to prevent contamination and/or spread of the Covid-19 to one another.

For the safety of all, these procedures are mandatory and must be adhered to for Mass attendance. Anyone who cannot comply are asked to leave. Holy Name Catholic Church Procedures will follow the Archdiocese of San Antonio Guidelines for Mass Attendees and are as follows:

1. If you are feeling sick, we ask that you stay safe at home. We highly encourage those who are most vulnerable to continue to participate in mass via live stream or website (holynameusa.org).

2. Wash hands thoroughly before coming to the church.

3. Everyone must have their temperature taken before entering the church when applicable. Anyone with a fever will not be allowed entry. Anyone coughing or sneezing may not be allowed entry.

4. All must wear a face mask that covers both nose and mouth before entering the church and throughout the Mass. No exceptions except for infant children.

5. Bring hand sanitizer, your own missal or other mass aids to church.

6. Always maintain 6 feet between you and others not in your cohabitating family.

7. Follow the instructions of the ushers as you enter and leave the Church.

8. When guided by the ushers to receive communion, wear your mask receiving Communion, only removing it or lifting the mask up to consume Jesus away from the Priest or Deacon.

9. Seating will be on a first come first served basis for now, Mass capacity will be dependent on the number of attendees in each group, we can Safely seat. 10. Unfortunately, there will be no saving of seats. We ask that you ensure you enter with whomever you want to sit with. Once seated we cannot allow anyone to reposition because it will compromise the 6-foot separation distance.

11. After receiving Communion, we need everyone to maintain in their seats until the ushers direct your row towards the exits. We ask that you please be patient, as we are doing our best to maintain exiting in an orderly manner.

12. Finally, we ask that you be very patient with us, especially our volunteers who did not establish these procedures, but are only following them. They are giving of their time to help us conduct Mass, without volunteers this Mass would not happen. Thank you.

in promoting faith in children and youth include: parents’ personal faith and practice

a close and warm parent-child relationship parent modeling and teaching a religious faith

parent involvement in church life and Sunday worship grandparent religious influence and relationship (Bengston, et al.)”
