FAZtor ’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Happy Father’s Day! It’s a day to thank our Heav-enly Father for the beauty of his creation including you and me, but especially the fathers of this world whose special day we celebrate this Sun-

day. It’s certainly a special day to thank our earthly fathers for the love and care they have for family. It will be easy to thank them when you think of the beautiful memories and happy moments with them. There will always be some misunderstandings and arguments within the family members, but someday we can turn them into beautiful memories and happy moments. Like when my mom was mad at my dad and she started lecturing him while he was just sitting quietly listening to her. After my mom’s long sermon, my dad told me: “Son, can you start singing the Offertory Song, I will do the collection.” My best wish for my dad is for him to rest peacefully and enjoy his eternal life in the presence of our God the Father. For those of you whose dads are still alive, cherish every moment with them. Remember to pray for them and give them your best wishes. Continue to pray for the “fathers” of the church, your priests, especially from the Archdiocese of San Francisco. This is a month for their annual retreat and spiritual nourishment. Last week, from Monday to Friday, Fr. Toan joined the first batch of clergy at Val-lombrosa Retreat Center in Menlo Park and this week will be my turn. I saw a lot of fathers, so proud of their little children graduating from Preschool on last Friday. Ryan Hall was almost packed with families, relatives and friends attending the graduation rite of the thirty eight (38) preschoolers transitioning to Kindergarten next school year. As usual, they were so adorable as they sang some songs and one group danced a Tango and another a slow waltz. The hard work, effort and commitment of their teachers and the supports of their parents were equally laudable. Our preschool has been thriving under Director Alice Seher, growing exponentially and has been making a difference in the lives of these kids and their families, as well as to our parish and our neighborhood. The existence and operation of our Preschool has contributed much to our parish financial viability. “Well done, good and faithful Stew-ard.”

A preschooler asked: “Dad, are bugs good to eat?” “Let’s not talk about such things at the dinner table, son,” his

father replied. After dinner the father inquired, “Now, son, what did you want

to ask me?” “Oh, nothing,” the boy said. “There was a bug in your soup, but now it’s gone.” We always ask children to listen to their parents. But parents should also listen to their children. Most of the time, we always want our Heavenly Father to listen to us, but we rarely listen to him. Be glad and thankful we have a Father who always listens to us.

The story of the beloved patron of hopeless situations comes to life in this epic film starring Vittoria Belvedere (Pope John Paul II, The Apoc-alypse) and Martin Crewes. Rita is a young woman who longs to enter the convent, but when she meets Paolo, a handsome knight, she ac-cepts his offer of marriage. Her new family isn’t as welcoming as she would wish, and soon she finds that her husband’s brothers are in-volved in violence and murder. Determined to reform her husband, Rita succeeds in winning him over. She and Paolo are blessed with two sons and living happily when tragedy strikes...and Rita loses eve-rything. Reflections on Father’s Day 2015: Don’t Forget, It’s Not About You By John McCormick Author, ‘Dad, Tell Me a Story’ As I write this article the week after Father’s Day, I’m think-ing about a day several years ago when I discovered something im-portant about fatherhood. My now 16-year-old son Will was three, and we’d been playing with his toy dinosaurs on the floor for a few hours. “Son, I’ve got to do some work-work now,” I told him, using Will’s term for my office work. “You play by yourself for a while, okay?” “Okay, Dad.” Will looked at me with the all-knowing smile of a three-year-old. Without missing a beat he added, “Now, will you play with me some more?” His answer hit me like a Zen koan, a response intended to demonstrate the inadequacy of logical reasoning and to provoke en-lightenment. Enlightened, I was. It occurred to me in that instant that no matter what I did in my career, no matter what contribution I could make to my profession, nothing would ever be as important as sitting on the floor playing games with my son for as long as he liked. And that’s what I did. I put off my “work-work,” and stayed in the moment playing dinosaurs with Will. As my wife often tells me, when you’re a parent, it’s not about you. Ever since, I’ve tried to live my wife’s advice, putting more emphasis whenever possible on the family side of the work/family balance. What followed were long afternoons sitting in the hot sun at baseball games I thought would never end, hours watching lacrosse practices on cold, damp March mornings, and even longer evenings helping with (and stressing over) homework. Weekends where I spent more time chauffeuring than relaxing became the norm. But I never minded. Spending precious moments with my sons meant so much more to me than missed golf outings, extra workouts at the gym, or lazing on the couch watching football games. And work rarely entered the equation, except when it had to. I learned that oft-quoted saw is really true—when you grow old, you’ll never remember those extra hours you spent at the office, but you will remember the extra time spent with your kids. But this Father’s Day was a first for me. Will was away from home on a high school community service trip, and his younger broth-er Connor spent the week at a sports camp. Both called or texted me on Father’s Day, but it wasn’t the same as cooking dinner together around the barbecue, enjoying a movie afterwards, or even sitting on the floor like we used to, playing games. And I saw the writing on the wall. I got a glimpse for the first time of what it will be like to be an empty nester. Connor starts high school this fall, and in two years Will is off to college. If Father’s Day 2015 is any predictor, I’ll be a complete mess, lavishing my pent-up paternal affections on the family dogs. Or maybe not. As usual, my wife’s calming influence and advice have centered me. Don’t forget, it’s not about you. In the past, to be a good father, I needed to be there for my boys no matter how busy or dis-tracted I felt. Now that they’re older, things are shifting. To be a good dad today means giving them less of me, and giving my children more time to explore or find new adventures by themselves. But I’m confi-dent our shared past has shown them I’ll always be here in case they need someone to talk to or guide them. Whether they’ll be home with me for Father’s Day 2016, or for the years after that, I take comfort in knowing that wherever they might be, I’ll always be their dad.

John McCormick and his sons William and Connor are the authors of the book,“Dad, Tell Me A Story,” How to Revive the Tradition of Storytelling with Your Children (Nicasio Press 2013). For more information about family story-telling and their book, visit the authors’ website and blog at http://DadTellMeAStory.com. John McCormick is currently working on a novel set during World War One.

Sunday Readings The first reading is taken from the Book of Zechariah 12:10-11. Zechariah is one of the twelve minor prophets who lived and preached in Jerusalem to the returned exiles about 520 B.C. The second reading is from Galatians 3:26-29 in which St. Paul says that all who accept Christ are the Chosen People, the real descendants of Abraham, no matter what their race or nationality. The Gospel is from St. Luke 9:18-24. The lesson intended for us in this passage of Luke's gospel is most likely in the last few lines. A true follower of Christ if he values eternal life must be ready to carry his cross and, if necessary, must be ready to be nailed to it, as Christ was. We are Christians because we sincerely want to have the everlasting life he came on earth to give us. He went through the ex-cruciating death by crucifixion, the most painful and the most humiliat-ing form of execution then known. He did so in order to enable us to merit heaven. He was the Son of God. He had no sins or faults of any kind to atone for. His sufferings were all willingly undertaken for our sakes. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that we should be expected to imitate him for our own sakes and in so far as God will demand it of us, by carrying our daily crosses. Down through the nineteen and a half centuries of the Church's history, there have been heroic exam-ples of men and women who have undergone torture and martyrdom rather than deny Christ or risk their eternal life. We respect them and we honor them. Most of us may feel we would be unable to face such a test of our faith. But God will see to that. When he sends a heavy cross, he strengthens the shoulder that has to bear it. What the vast majority of us are called on and expected to do, is to bear our own relatively little daily crosses cheerfully and gladly—keeping God's commandments when temptations to break them are strong around us. Bearing patiently with one's state in life when others seem to have the best of everything, putting up with a nagging wife or husband, often is a slow and private martyrdom. Forgiving those who injure us and not seeking revenge is a heavy cross, too. Bearing ill-health pa-tiently, instead of perpetually grumbling against God and against those around us, is another form of Christian martyrdom. These are but a sample of the many crosses that all men have to bear. Those unfortu-nate ones who have never heard of God or of a future life, or who refuse to believe in anything beyond the grave, have the same cross-es to bear as we have. We have the marvelous help of our faith. We know that there is an eternal life awaiting us, if we live our Christian life as Christ told us to live it. This surely lightens our crosses, where-as the atheist has nothing to lighten his load of sorrow, no future to look forward to, and the present life is a misery until the grave puts an end to it. Thank you, God, for the gift of faith. Thank you, Christ, for having made eternal life available to me, and for showing me how to reach it. Please give me the grace and the strength to show myself worthy of my heaven! Excepted from The Sunday Readings, Fr. Kevin O'Sullivan, O.F.M.
