SCHEDULINGMASS INTENTIONSOne of the greatest acts of charity is to pray for the living and the dead (a spiritual work of mercy). The greatest and most powerful prayer we have is the Mass, since the fruits of the Mass are the very fruits of Jesus’ redemption. You can schedule a Mass intention for deceased friends and loved ones by calling the parish office at (614) 267-9241, or by turning in a written request. Mass stipends (offerings) are $10 each. Mass intentions can also be requested for special intentions.

SEPTEMBER CONTRIBUTORS TO THE SANCTUARY LAMPSThe Sanctuary lamp burns constantly to proclaim the real presence of Jesus in the Tabernacle. For the month of September, the three Sanctuary candles in the Church were donated by the Haulund and Spinosi family. Thank you for your generosity.

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNIONPope Francis, after reciting a livestreamed Angelus prayer March 15, told people, “United to Christ we are never alone, but instead form one body, of which he is the head. It is a union that is nourished with prayer and also with spiritual communion in the Eucharist, a practice that is recommended when it isn’t possible to receive the sacrament.”

Here is the Act of Spiritual Communion written by St. Alphonsus de Liguori:

My Jesus, I believe that Youare present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this momentreceive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.Amen.

Civil Dialogue: A response to Jesus’ call to love our neighbor

Jesus uses the parable of the Good Samaritan to answer a question that is both searing and simple: “Who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10: 29). Our familiarity with this parable makes it easy for us now to identify as “neighbor” those on the margins of our society such as those experiencing homelessness or poverty. But how often do we see our neighbor in the person who disagrees with us?

As Catholics, our strong tradition of social teaching compels us to be actively engaged in the building up of our communities. This is achieved by being involved in the political process—and yet today, many shy away from such involvement because our national and local conversations are filled with vitriol and harsh language, often directed at people themselves. When personal attacks replace honest debate, no one wins. This kind of attack, no matter the reason, only serves to further divide our communities.

What is needed is good, honest, civil dialogue. This means that we must treat everyone as worthy of being at the table, worthy of our respect, and worthy of being heard. In short, it means treating everyone as our neighbor.

We undermine our commitment to human life and dignity when we fail to see the dignity of those who have a different viewpoint. We must detach from the bitterness that surrounds us and seek a better path. A commitment to civil dialogue

can help us make real and authentic human connections, which breaks down the barriers that divide us.

Engaging in civil dialogue can help our faith communities create a new space to model love for our neighbors and respect for the dignity of all.

Civil dialogue can best be defined as the ability to enter meaningful conversation with people whose viewpoints may be different from our own, who have a different background or experiences, or who come to a different conclusion about the best way to promote the common good. We enter into civil dialogue because we want to build a community that is rooted in understanding one another. God’s love for each person requires us to remember that someone who disagrees with us is still a beloved child of

Tips for Engaging in Civil Dialogue:

1. Listen first and seek to understand the whole picture.

2. Ask questions for clarification. 3. Use ‘I’ statements; pay attention

to body language. 4. Listen to what feelings are

present and pay attention to how you respond.

5. Summarize what you’ve heard and ask for feedback.

An important ingredient to civil dialogue is commitment to the truth. While respecting the dignity of all, we acknowledge that not all viewpoints are equally valid. We have the responsibility to speak truth with love. In addition, all who exercise their freedom of speech have an obligation to ensure that they come to conclusions based on data from credible and reputable sources, and that care is taken to avoid seeking the truth selectively, that is, only when it is convenient to us.

Civil dialogue is different than remaining silent in the face of disagreement. Listening to opposing views is a part of seeking clarity and can be a creative process. In civil dialogue, all are invited to bring and share their values, beliefs, and questions. We seek first to understand how our views on a topic are different and why. We ask questions to be sure we understand one another. In thinking critically about how we arrived at our own view points and listening to the experiences of others, we can sometimes arrive at new understanding and even find common ground.

Pope Francis has remarked, “Dialogue allows people to know and understand one another’s needs. Above all, it is a sign of great respect, because it puts the person into a stance of listening, and into a condition of being receptive to the speaker’s best viewpoints. Secondly, dialogue is an expression of charity because, while not ignoring differences, it can help us investigate and share the common good. Moreover, dialogue invites us to place ourselves before the other, seeing him or her as a gift of God, and as someone who calls upon us and asks to be acknowledged.”i

i Pope Francis, Jubilee Audience at St. Peter’s Square, October 22, 2016.

Just like any authentic human connection, the process of dialogue is complicated, often uncomfortable, and requires vulnerability and trust. We must rely on our faith in Christ who taught us that everyone is truly our neighbor. Promoting civil discourse is one way we can put this teaching into action.

Interested in learning more about civil dialogue or about how your community can engage in civil dialogue more often? Join USCCB’s Civilize It Campaign to help promote dignity beyond the debate. A version of this campaign was first implemented by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and is a call for all people to civilize our conversations. Visit civilizeit.org for more information, to take the pledge, or plan an opportunity for civil dialogue in your community.

If you are part of a group looking to create an opportunity for civil dialogue in your community, it may be helpful to consider these questions:

1. Is our intention to facilitate greater understanding, or merely win a debate?

2. Whose voices are we including? Whose are missing? Who else should be invited to the conversation?

3. How can we remember our shared human dignity and deescalate the situation when we feel ourselves become tense?

4. What guidelines could the group set together that will keep the conversation centered on dialogue instead of debate, and honor the dignity of all people present?

TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 20, 2020

Dear Friends,Over the past few months, our lives have changed dramatically with many new challenges added to the existing oneswe have been working to solve.  As I talk with parishioners in our parishes and with members of our community, Ihave heard some express a “poverty of hope” that weighs them down as they grapple with COVID-19,unemployment, the effects of structural racism, physical and mental health issues and more.  These people arelooking to the Church for hope and for help. St. Peter reminds us that Christ is the reason for our hope.  His deathand resurrection brought us out of slavery to sin and gave us the promise of an everlasting future with Him.  He alsopromised never to leave us orphaned, but to remain with us until the end of time.  So the Church, as the Body ofChrist, can offer hope to the people of this age, through the Sacraments, the example and intercession of the saints, her many charitable agencies and ministries, and the accompaniment of those who are struggling by the Christiancommunity. I want to invite you to join me in sharing our hope with others in a Season of Hope.  It will bea journey for us, one that through prayer, reflection, changed actions and changed attitudes will renew usand prepare us to better accompany our fellow travelers in need.  The Diocesan HOPE Task Force, isoffering for your journey through the Season of Hope, some tools to kick-start the reflection process; toshare in prayer and encourage changed actions based on this heightened awareness of issues and concernsof our faithful membership.  These supports and resources will be available monthly on topics that impactall of us and filled with suggestions, supports and resources to accompany you on your journey.  For theSeason of Hope resources, visit www.columbuscatholic.org/season-of-hope.

FAITH FORMATIONImmaculate Conception Church September 20, 2020

Bishop Robert Brennan is calling for Thursday, September 24,the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy, to be a day of prayer andpenance for healing and conversion in our community and ournation. “Images of Our Lady of Mercy, in the past known asOur Lady of Ransom, the patronal feast of the Mercedarians, often show Mary gathering people under her mantle,” BishopBrennan said. “It is Mary that gathers God’s people together tobring them to her Son, to Divine Mercy. In these troubled anduncertain times, this is an important day for us to not onlyacknowledge the need for conversion and God’s help and mercyin the world but the profound need for us to BE mercy – to beinstruments of God’s mercy to one another.”

BISHOP BRENNAN CALLS FOR A DAY OF PRAYERON SEPTEMBER 24

In this way, anchored in Christ, our hope, we can help overcome that poverty of hope that is experienced byour brothers and sisters. May God give us the ability and determination to be salt and light in the world.Sincerely yours in Christ,Most Reverend Robert J. Brennan, Bishop of Columbus

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH COLUMBUS, OHIO

John Bruzzese grew up on Piedmont Road and remembers walking to school with his siblings in all kinds of weather. And they were thankful (actually, he doesn’t recall being too thankful at the time). He is very thankful for IC. John Bruzzese sent his daughter Madie and son Mike to IC. Immaculate Conception is a place of familiarity and comfort and holds a lot of fond memories!

Matt and Laura Hangen are the parents to seven children. Their oldest, Luke is a recent Immaculate Conception graduate. He is now a freshman at Bishop Watterson. Currently attending Immaculate Conception are Jack (7th), Michael (6th), Nathan (3rd) and James (Kindergarten). The youngest siblings, Joseph (2 years) and Corinne (3 months) love watching their big brothers return home from school by foot or on bikes. We have found Immaculate Conception to be generous, lively and faith filled community. We love our neighborhood school!

IC DOES THE DERBY, THANK YOU!!Fr. Matt and the IC Does the Derby team wish to thank everyone who participated and donated to IC Does the Derby. A special thank you to the IC Festival Chairs (Jerry and Jen Bennet and Chris and Jessica Schultheis), who created this unique event in lieu of the IC Festival this

past summer. IC Does the Derby was a wonderful way to strengthen the Immaculate Conception community while providing financial support for the IC School Sustainability Fund.Because of the huge support from our parish community, we were able to exceed our goal. Of course, the parishioners and friends who volunteered their time, donated sponsorships, and Silent Auction items, are greatly appreciated and helped make this event a true success. THANK YOU!

The Eichel Clan moved into the Clintonville neighborhood ‘a while back’ and have enjoyed growing up in the IC parish. Our three children, Christy, Beth and Will attended IC school and went on to either Waterson or St. Charles for high school. Our family has been blessed with wonderful additions, including six fantastic grandchildren ranging in age from 9 years to 7 weeks. We have always found IC parishioners welcoming and have enjoyed being involved with multiple activities and groups. One of the most powerful blessings of IC is having such incredible Catholic leadership from our pastors and school principals.
