FAITH FORMATION - Faith Formation is off to a super
start! Please take the time to visit the various Faith For-
mation classrooms to see the great things the kids are up
to! Every location is building a “Word Wall” this year. Ask
a child to tell you about it!
Christmas Program- We are getting organized for our 3rd
annual Christmas Program. This year will include a Bell
Choir led by Jan Roth, a Band led by George Standish and
a Christmas Play. Please see the sign-up sheets in the
backs of the churches. We would like children signed up
before September 28th. We will have a parent meeting for
the program on Tuesday, September 30th at the Communi-
ty Center in Perkinsville at 7:30 pm.
Every week, I would like to recognize children and teenag-
ers for their Christian Attitudes. If you see a child acting in
a Christian way, please call the office and let us know! We
will add them to the bulletin. 728-2228.

Parish Life/Adult Faith Formation
Next month, we will celebrate together at our annual Parish
Retreat, October 19-21. Our theme this year is Disciple-
ship: Called to Christian Joy. Our honored guest, Bishop
Emeritus Matthew Clark will open our celebration at
9:30AM Mass at Sacred Heart in Perkinsville. We will con-
tinue by gathering at St. Joseph’s Church in Wayland on
Monday and Tuesday evenings at 7:00PM.
We are reminded of our discipleship each
time we enter church by blessing ourselves
with holy water. Making the sign of the cross
with holy water helps us to remember that we
were cleansed from sin during Baptism and
were called to follow God’s path. Thus, holy water is a
symbol of Christian joy and the promise of eternal life and
God’s protection and care for us.
HOW DO I COPE WITH SINFUL THOUGHTS?
BECAUSE THOUGHTS are the starting point of action,
Jesus said the contents of your heart are a matter for con-
cern. So when confronted with the so-called sinful thought,
the goal is not to entertain it. Deliberately choosing to mull
over the idea and spending time on developing the out-
come gives temptation a chance to root down and develop
into tangible action. A fleeting thought becomes an occa-
sion of sin when you cultivate and enjoy the fantasy of
stealing, causing injury to an enemy, or ravishing the
stranger or coworker. Therefore it’s appropriate to identify a
thought as sinful at once.
Once you name a fleeting impulse properly, you can do
what Jesus did when confronted by a tempting idea: banish
it with authority. If the spirit of evil has a long history in you
and won’t retreat easily, you can do what the apostles did:
invoke the authority of Jesus. “In the name of Jesus Christ,
get lost!” Jesus also notes that some forms of evil have
great staying power and can only be driven out by prayer.
When dealing with addictive forms of temptation, communal
support as found in recovery programs may also be useful.
