Health Ministry: Beware the Yellow Jacket (We're not talking clothes.) Often confused with bees, but lack the fuzzy coating of hair on their black and bright yellow striped bodies, these Yellow Jackets (ground nesting wasps) are much more aggressive. Their sting is very painful and they’re capable of sting-ing more than once. They thrive on protein and sugar and so arrive at our picnics to dine with us. Preventing Stings: * Don't swat - just walk away. * Pour canned drinks into a glass to prevent the wasp from flying into the can. * Keep garbage can and dog food covered. * Observe the flight pattern to determine nest site, then avoid it. * If stung, get away quickly. The insect may leave behind a chemical that incites other Yellow Jackets to attack. Seek Medical Help If: * Allergic or if stung 10 or more times. * If stung in mouth or throat. * Have any symptoms like trouble breathing or speaking, wheezing, swell-ing of mouth or throat, develop hives or rash. Ease Pain: * Use commercial sting remedy or one of these homemade concoctions: paste of baking soda and water, cut side of onion, damp tea bag, meat tenderizer with papain, tooth-paste, or Preparation H! * Then there is always ice, aspirin, ibuprofen to reduce swelling and ease pain. 11:30 AM St. John Rectory Are you interested in learning about the Catholic faith? If so, RCIA is for you! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the term for the way in which adults are initiated into full member-ship with the Roman Catholic Church. There will be an Informational Meeting held at 11:30 a.m. in the St. John Rectory on Sunday, August 27th. There is no obligation to go further, but if you wish to continue, RCIA is the process for entering the Catholic Church. RCIA will be meeting Sundays at 11:30 a.m. in the St. John Rectory following the 10:30 AM Mass. Classes begin Sunday, September 10th. If you know someone who is interest-ed in becoming Catholic contact Dee Golembiewski [email protected] or Kathi Mangus at 513-422-0602 or [email protected].

Introductions to Sunday Readings by Bishop Ken Untener, in collaboration with Catherine Haven and Fr. Bill Taylor

First Reading - Isaiah 56:1, 6-7 The last part of the book of Isaiah contains the words of a prophet who lived after the Jews returned from exile. Today’s passage speaks of salvation being offered to all, regardless of ethnic origin or social condition. Christians have seen in this an anticipation of the message that Jesus will preach.

Second Reading - Romans 11:13-15, 29-32 Today’s reading is the conclusion of Paul’s thoughts about how Jewish people are going to participate in the saving grace of Jesus. Paul was Jewish and he loved his own people. He was disappointed that most of them had not accepted the Gospel. Paul hoped that his success in converting the Gentiles would encourage the Jewish people to take a second look at the message of Jesus.

Congratulations Ralph & Darlene Abney! Ralph & Darlene celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary on August 9th! 65 years blessed and more to come!

BACK TO SCHOOL PRAYER

Our Father in heaven,

We’re nearing another changing of

seasons. Summer is winding down, and a

new school year is beginning – just like it

did last year, and the year before.

Through this predictable repetition in our

calendar and Your creation, we see Your

faithfulness. Help us to look at the sunrise

and remember that You always keep

Your promises.

As we approach another transition

sending our kids back to school,

conflicting emotions wrestle within us.

New fears jostle with new hopes.

We’re happy to send our children back

to the classroom, and sad to see them go.

We delight in their excitement, and worry

with them over the unknown.

Calm our hearts, Lord, and give us

a peace that passes understanding.

Amen
