SECOND SUNDAY OF CHRISTMAS FEAST OF THE MOST HOLY FAMILY: A FAMILY OF REFUGEES

According to Matthew's account, Jesus' family has lived the tragic experience of refugees, forced to flee their home to seek asylum in a strange country. With the birth of Jesus, peace has not come to his house. On the contrary, they have been immediately surrounded by all kinds of threats, intrigues and penalties. It all starts when they know that Herod seeks the child to kill him. As it happens so many times, under the apparent well-being of that powerful, perfectly organized reign, there is hidden little violence and cruelty. Jesus' family seeks refuge in the Roman province of Egypt, outside Herod's control, asylum well known to those fleeing their persecution. At night, in a hasty and distressing way, begins his odyssey. For a moment, it seems that they will be able to enjoy peace because "those who threatened the child have died." The family returns to Judea, but they learn that the one who reigns there, is known for his "cruelty and tyranny." Again, anguish, uncertainty and flight to Galilee, to hide in an unknown mountain town, called Nazareth. Can we imagine a story more contrary to scene of the birth of Jesus being born among songs of peace, toned by choirs of angels, in the middle of a wonderfully lit night? What is Matthew's message in drawing the first steps of Jesus with such bleakness? The first thing is not to dream. The peace that the Messiah brings is not a gift rained from heaven. God's saving action makes its way through threats and uncertainties, far from power and security. Those who work for a better world with the spirit of this Messiah will do so from the weakness of the threatened, not from the security of the powerful. Therefore, Matthew does not call Jesus "King of the Jews" but "God-with-us." We must recognize it by sharing the fate of those who live in insecurity and fear, at the mercy of the powerful. One thing is clear: there will only be peace when those who attack the innocent disappear. To work for peace is to fight against abuse and injustice. In that effort, often painful and uncertain, we must know that our life is sustained and guided by the "invisible Presence" of God whom we must seek in the darkness of faith. Thus Joseph seeks, among nightmares and night fears, light and strength to defend Jesus and his mother. Thus the cause of Jesus is defended.

SEGUNDO DOMINGO DE NAVIDAD FIESTA DE LA SAGRADA FAMILIA: UNA FAMILIA DE REFUGIADOS

Según el relato de Mateo, la familia de Jesús ha vivido la experiencia trágica de los refugiados, obligados a huir de su hogar para buscar asilo en un país extraño. Con el nacimiento de Jesús no ha llegado a su casa la paz. Al contrario, enseguida se han visto envueltos por toda clase de amenazas, intrigas y penalidades. Todo comienza cuando saben que Herodes busca al niño para acabar con él. Como sucede tantas veces, bajo el aparente bienestar de aquel reinado poderoso, perfectamente organizado, se esconde no poca violencia y crueldad. La familia de Jesús busca refugio en la provincia romana de Egipto, fuera del control de Herodes, asilo bien conocido por quienes huían de su persecución. De noche, de manera precipitada y angustiosa, comienza su odisea. Por un momento, parece que podrán disfrutar de paz pues «han muerto los que atentaban contra el niño». La familia vuelve a Judea, pero se enteran de que allí reina uno que es conocido por su "crueldad y tiranía". De nuevo, la angustia, la incertidumbre y la huida a Galilea, para esconderse en un pueblo desconocido de la montaña, llamado Nazaret. ¿Podemos imaginar un relato más contrario a la escena del nacimiento de Jesús naciendo entre cantos de paz, entonados por coros de ángeles, en medio de una noche maravillosamente iluminada? ¿Cuál es el mensaje de Mateo al dibujar tan sombríos los primeros pasos de Jesús? Lo primero es no soñar. La paz que trae el Mesías no es un regalo llovido del cielo. La acción salvadora de Dios se abre camino en medio de amenazas e incertidumbres, lejos del poder y la seguridad. Quienes trabajen por un mundo mejor con el espíritu de este Mesías, lo harán desde la debilidad de los amenazados, no desde la seguridad de los poderosos. Por eso, Mateo no llama a Jesús "Rey de los judíos" sino "Dios-con-nosotros". Lo hemos de reconocer compartiendo la suerte de quienes viven en la inseguridad y el miedo, a merced de los poderosos. Una cosa es clara: sólo habrá paz cuando desaparezcan los que atentan contra los inocentes. Trabajar por la paz es luchar contra los abusos e injusticias. En ese esfuerzo, muchas veces penoso e incierto, hemos de saber que nuestra vida está sostenida y guiada por la "Presencia invisible" de Dios al que hemos de buscar en la oscuridad de la fe. Así busca José, entre pesadillas y miedos nocturnos, luz y fuerza para defender a Jesús y a su madre. Así se defiende la causa de Jesús.

POPE REFLECTS ON HOLY FAMILY

The Holy Father recalled that the Sunday within the Octave of Christmas is the feast of the Holy Family. The day’s Gospel recounts the story of the finding of Jesus in the Temple. The Holy Family had gone to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover; but on the return voyage, Mary and Joseph discovered that Jesus, who was only twelve years old, was not in the caravan. They searched for Jesus for three days, finally finding Him in the Temple amid the doctors of the law. When they found Jesus, the Gospel says, “they were astonished”; and Mary expressed her concern to Jesus, saying, “Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.” Astonishment never failed Pope Francis focused on these two feelings of “astonishment” and “anxiety” in his reflection at the Angelus. In the Holy Family, he said, astonishment “never failed.” To feel astonishment, he said, “is the opposite of taking everything for granted… It means opening ourselves to others.” This attitude, he said, is important for “healing compromised relationships” and curing “the open wounds within the family.” Holy Family centered on Jesus The “anxiety” felt by Mary and Joseph “shows the centrality of Jesus in the Holy Family,” Pope Francis explained. And so, he said, “we see why the family of Nazareth is holy: because it was centered on Jesus; all the attention and care of Joseph revolved around Him.” Pope Francis said the anxiety felt by Mary and Joseph when Jesus was lost for three days “should also be our anxiety when we are far from Jesus; when we forget Jesus, going without prayer, without reading the Gospel for several days. Mary and Joseph, he said, found Jesus in the Temple; and we too, should seek Jesus in the house of God – and especially in the liturgy, where we have the living experience of Jesus, in His Word and in the Eucharist, “from which we receive the strength to face the difficulties of each day.” Praying for all families The Holy Father concluded his reflection by asking everyone “to pray for all the families of the world, especially those that, for various reasons, are lacking in peace and harmony” and to “entrust them to the protection of the Holy Family of Nazareth.”

“In his faithful response to God’s commands, Joseph also knew how to “listen to the word of God and act on

it.” Joseph stands with eager expectation at the threshold of transcendence. From the darkness of his own limited understanding, he is continually peering into the mystery of God. Surely he cannot fathom the mystery of God’s plan, but with loving compassion he bows in reverence to God’s incomprehensible ways.

There is something very beautiful about Joseph’s contacts with the transcendent mystery of God. He was not a monk. He was a carpenter, and he raised his son in the same trade. Yet in the midst of his daily manual labor and family life, Joseph was surrounded by the

mystery of God and he penetrated it with faith. He trusted in God’s daily providence. When he

read the signs of God’s will, he rushed to put them into practice.”

Holy Family / Sagrada Familia Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendor of true love, to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic Churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division: may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer.

God, thank you for a New Year. May everyone in our family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. Lord, we know that you are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to forgive ourselves and to forgive one another. As we begin a new year, remind us of our truest values and our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time.

HOLY SACRAMENTS

Infant Baptism Birth to 6 yrs. Infant baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of every month. Baptism preparation class for parents and Godparents are held on the Tuesday prior to the Baptism Sunday. Parent(s) or Godparent(s), please bring an original birth certificate of the child to the main office where you can begin the process of registration for this beautiful sacrament.

Children’s Faith Formation ages 7 yrs. to 15 yrs. (Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation) Our Children’s Faith Formation program provides preparation of the Holy Sacraments for children. The program follows Diocesan Guidelines for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children. The hours for children's faith formation classes are Sunday, 9:30 A.M. -1:00 P.M.

Pentecost Confirmation 16 yrs. and older Are you baptized and received First Holy Communion but have not completed the Sacrament of Confirmation and you are over the age of 16? Our Confirmation only program begins in January in preparation for Pentecost Confirmation typically at the end of May or beginning of June.

Anointing of the sick Call (718) 455-6864 to make arrangements for the sick person to receive Holy Communion or the Anointing of the Sick at home.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) (Becoming a Catholic)

Are you baptized? Have you received First Holy Communion? Are you Confirmed? Adults and youth at least 16 yrs. of age seeking full initiation into the Catholic Church are invited to enter into a process of faith formation. RCIA classes are all year round.

LOS SACRAMENTOS Bautismo para bebes nacimiento a 6 años

Los bautismos para bebes se celebran el primer domingo de cada mes. La clase de preparación del bautismo para los padres y padrinos es el martes antes del domingo del bautismo. Padres o Padrinos, traiga el certificado de nacimiento original del niño a la oficina principal donde pueden comenzar el proceso de inscripción para este hermoso sacramento.

Formación de Fe para Niños 7 años hasta 15 años (Bautismo, Primera Comunión, Confirmación) El programa de formación de fe para nuestros niños se prepara los niños para sus Sacramentos. El programa sigue las Directrices Diocesanas para el Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de los Niños. Las horas para las clases son domingo, 9:30 A.M. -1:00 P.M.

Confirmación de Pentecostés 16 años y adelante ¿Se ha bautizado y recibido la Primera Comunión pero no ha completado el Sacramento de la Confirmación y tiene más de 16 años de edad? Nuestro programa de Confirmación solo comienza en enero en preparación para la Confirmación de Pentecostés típicamente en mayo o junio.

Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos: R.I.C.A. (Convertirse Católico)

¿Está bautizado? ¿Has recibido la Primera Comunión? ¿Está Confirmado? Se invita a los adultos y jóvenes 16 años y adelante, que buscan la iniciación completa en la Iglesia Católica para entrar en un proceso de formación de fe. Las clases de R.I.C.A. son todo el año.
