ut the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps." The

foolish versus the wise. Today's parable sets these two groups in stark contrast to one another. Two crowds of young women wait for a wedding feast. One group comes prepared for the unexpected, the other just assumes everything will go according to schedule. But it doesn't! The Bridegroom is late, and the

foolish virgins are left out in the dark--literally--while the wise ones enjoy the feast inside. The lesson here is not just about having foresight and gathering the corresponding equipment. It's about being ready for the second coming of Christ. Jesus himself is the "Bridegroom." Traditionally we refer to the Church as the "Bride of Christ" and we, as the people of God who constitute the Church, are even now awaiting the real feast, the culmination of time when Jesus returns. But are we standing among the wise or the foolish as we wait? Jesus tells us today, "Stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour." Are we spiritually awake? Do we have extra oil to see us through, or are we hitting the bottom of the barrel and running on spiritual fumes so to speak? Do we think it's enough to do the bare minimum as we wait for Christ, stepping into church without really being present, or calling ourselves Christian without really taking up the challenge of the cross? In order to avoid standing outside the feast with the foolish, we will want to make sure we fill our flasks with oil or, in other words, fill our hearts with the love of God, fill our minds with his word and his teachings, and fill our souls with the virtues that unite us to his will. If we stock up on these important supplies, we can count ourselves among the wise!

On November 1, 2017, Archbishop of Hartford, Leonard Blair wrote:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

More than 46 million people in our country are living in poverty. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is an anti-poverty effort on the part of our Church to help people find hope and a better life. Our support for this collection reaches those whom Pope Francis describes as living on the economic and social "peripheries," or margins, offering them a hand up, not a hand out.

An example: Around Charleston, South Carolina, many children live in poverty, with an uncertain future. Deteriorating school systems struggle to provide quality education and appropriate discipline, and there is a high rate of school-based arrests. By engaging congregations and communities allover the city, the Charleston Area Justice Ministry is working to im-prove the education system and keep kids in school and out of the juvenile justice system. With the support of the national CCHD Collection, the Charleston Area Justice Ministry is able to provide community engagement to reduce youth arrests and violence.

Closer to home: The Naugatuck Valley Project (NVP), a recipient of support from the CCHD, builds community, develops leaders and helps them organize to address community issues such as housing and jobs. Having identified a problem in Waterbury for residents of four downtown elderly high-rise buildings, NVP, working with city officials, helped create a reduced rate parking permit for home healthcare workers serving the elderly. The problem was the constant need of caregivers to attend to their expiring parking meters, leaving the elderly resident alone. Now an affordable parking lot is available-something small in some ways, but very significant to the people involved. Your contribution to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development collection makes a difference. Please prayerfully consider how you can help the CCHD this year. If you would like more information about the collection and those it supports, visit www.usccb.orglcchdlcollection.

Thank you for joining this effort in the spirit of the Gospel.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Leonard P. Blair Archbishop of Hartford

St. Bernard School (SBS)

Welcomes You! We are a community of students and teachers

Grades K-8.

TEACHER CORNER: Elizabeth Tortora, (3rd grade teacher)

As a parishioner of St. Bernard's Church and a member of the newly-created parish of St. Jeanne Jugan, I want to highlight some of the positive energy that is the hallmark of our parish. By "energy" I'm referring to spiritual energy that radiates from all the wonderful parishioners, who participate in the active life of St. Bernard's Church. We bond together every Sunday, and are messengers of the Word. Together we are adhering to the divine message of Our Savior Jesus Christ.

At our parish, we have a vibrant, active church community; our parish council, pastoral planning, missionary zeal/outreach to the Enfield community, Liturgy Committee, and wonderful Adult and Children's Choir, all impact upon our lives. There are numerous seasonal activities for everyone. Our church is also a safe-haven, welcoming everyone to join us!

This growth process extends beyond the walls of our church. This "energy" is cultivated at St. Bernard School (K - 8), and at our Little Angels Pre-K. I want to applaud our hardworking St. Bernard School Board and the continuous support of our par-ents. We are constant in our school's vision; with our dedicat-ed faculty, we boast over 300 years (combined total) of solid teaching experience, this broad-based experience is on all grade levels! Teachers constantly enhance their own profes-sional growth to better serve the needs of each child at school. They address the unique needs of each student, respecting diversity, and fostering a nurturing, caring environment. We promote spiritual growth, while boosting rigorous academic growth. Students are respected here; they are encouraged to THINK, and become responsible citizens. We use various mo-dalities throughout the teaching day, encouraging every learn-er to reach their full potential. At St. Bernard School we have a strong technology program that brings 21st century learning to all students. All of the programs offered, including before-school care, and after-school care, meet the needs of our school families. That's what makes us, WHO we are! This is our Catholic school family where your voice is heard, and your heart is comforted. The teaching staff and principal, Mrs. Mongillo, work cohesively towards one common goal: to teach the whole child. To this end I’m happy and humbled to be part of our school community.

Mass in Honor of Our Lady of Divine Providence,

Patroness of Puerto Rico

All are invited to a Mass in Honor of Our Lady of Divine Providence, Patroness of Puerto Rico that will be

celebrated in Spanish on

Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 10 am in the Cathedral of Saint Joseph, Hartford, CT. Archbishop Leonard P. Blair will be present to address the community and Father José Linares Pagan will be our homilist in the Mass. This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to gather and pray for Puerto Rico during this critical time as they continue with relief efforts due to the devastation caused by

Hurricanes Irma and Maria. A collection will be taken up at this Mass which will be sent for continued relief efforts in the island. Come and join us as we pray and support our brothers and sisters in

Puerto Rico!

Please keep St. Jeanne Jugan – St. Bernard Church - in your thoughts and prayers. We are very grateful to those families that have made a pledge to our Annual Collection, but we could still use whatever sup-port you can afford to give in order for us to meet our budgeted goal of 60,000.

These funds are critical to the vitality of our parish, as they are allocated for operating expenses, infrastructure, building and property

maintenance. As you open your wallets to obtain the tangible tokens of the season, please prayerfully consider supporting the intangible, but very real, community faith that you call HOME.
