A REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE HOLY FAMILY EX-STUDENTS ASSOCIATION FOR THE YEAR 2002 – 2003

The Holy Family High School Ex Students Association, continued it’s efforts as a bridge between the School and it’s Alumni in the Year 2002-2003.

The Association had earlier drawn up its Constitution and had pledged to meet at least once a month, on the third Sunday of each month at 11.00 a.m. in the School Library. Over the period July 2002 – May 2003, this Association has met a record 15 times, and as on May 30, 2003 has 780 registered members. (196 from batch of 2001-02).

The Ex Students Association would like to place on record the unstinting support given by Fr. Swamy and Mrs. Colette throughout the past year.

Some of the highlights of the Association are as follows:

Joe Nathan (1973-74 batch) was elected as President of the Association. Fr. Francis Swamy, as the Principal of Holy Family High School, is the Ex-officio Chairman of the Association and Mrs. Colette D’souza, as Vice Principal is a permanent member of the Managing Committee as also is the Headmistress Mrs. Wilma Fernandes. Fr. Jude Fernandes who took over as Vice-Principal of HFHS, also takes over as a permanent member of the Managing Committee whilst Ms. Colette, the outgoing Vice Principal, continues as a member of the Managing Committee.

Similarly, Sr. Shaila Gonsalves, who took over as Headmistress of the Primary Section from Mrs. Wilma Fernandes, also takes over as a Permanent Member of the Managing Committee.

The Managing Committee Office Bearers elected were:

Mr. Pawan Kumar Pruthi – Vice President, Dr. Chandrashekhar Algundi – Secretary, Sandeep Narayan – Jt. Secretary, Mr. Ramesh Waghela as Treasurer, Mr. Vipul Waghela – Jt. Treasurer, Mr. John Neelankavil, Mr. Anand Pejawar, Mrs. Sheel Bhalla, Mr. Lakhbir Singh, Ms. Bina Almeida, Mr. Titmus Rodrigues, Mr. Viki Lingeria, Mr. Francis Cardoza, Mr. Cyril Surti, Ms. Helen George, Ms. Bina Vargese.

Events held during the Year 2002-03 are summarized as follows:

Inter School Quiz Competition

Mr. Pawan Kumar had initiated the concept of arranging an Inter School Quiz Competion on September 01st, 2002. The topic for the Quiz Contest was “Mera Bharat Mahaan”. The groundwork for the Quiz was conducted and arranged by Mr. Pawan Kumar. Dr. Chandrashekar Algundi sponsored the prizes for the Winners and the Runners Up (Spot prizes for Audience questions) while Ramesh Waghela/ Lakhbir Singh sponsored 50% of the cost of the refreshments (Mementoes).

It was a unanimous observation that the Inter School Quiz conducted by the Ex-students Association, was a huge success judging by the presence of 14 schools from in and around Andheri. The Winners Trophy was collected by Marol Academy, Marol and the Runners-up prize was collected by Guru Nanak Mission High Schol, Chakala.

Appointment of Internal Auditor (M/s Chogmal & Co)Mr. Chintan Shah of M/s. Chogmal & Co were appointed Internal Auditors of the Holy Family High School Ex-students Association.

3rd Congress of JAAI (Jesuit Alumni Association of India), CalcuttaA write-up was given to Mr Conrad (representative of the Western Zone) for the 3rd Congress

of JAAI to be held in Calcutta between 21and 24th January 2003. The meeting was named as “The Summit of Joy”

Adopt- a- Child Scheme & Nutrition ProgramThis scheme has been running successfully. The Nutrition programme continues throughout the school term. Your Association has spent a total of Rs. 15,120/- for the year 2002-2003 on this account. The Adopt A child scheme was also initiated with the Association paying nearly Rs. 15,000 to meet the fees expenditure of some deserving students.

X Standard Students’ FarewellYour Association , this year too, co-sponsored the Farewell celebrations of the X Standard students, which by the feedback received, had gone off very well.

Diwali DhamakaThe Diwali Dhamka was an event organized by the Holy Family School, Teacher’s Association and the Ex-students Association and was held on Sunday, November 24th 2002. The concept was based on the Collection of Funds thru the Sale of Raffle Tickets. Participants would be given Prizes thru a Lucky Dip on the Raffle Ticket.

Games Stalls organized by the School Teachers & Students and Eat stalls along with DJ Music were arranged for the evening.

The final prizes on the Raffle tickets were as follows:

1st Prize : 220 lts Frost free Fridge from LG2nd Prize : Fully Automatic Washing M/c from LG3rd Prize : 21” Colour TV from LGAttractive prizes were to be given away as Consolation Prizes.

Annual Re-union Day (February 22nd 2003)The concept of a “Carnival/ Hawaiian Night” was the attraction for the Annual Re-Union Day for the Ex-students of Holy Family High School and was held on February 22nd 2003.

Greater Bombay Secretary Teachers AssociationThe Ex-students Association received an appeal from Sharma Sir (Hindi Teacher-Retired) regarding sponsorship towards the Greater Bombay Teachers Association. It was decided by the core committee members to contribute Rs. 3000/- as sponsorship for a ½ page advertisement in the Souvenir to be published.

Alumni PicnicAs per the suggestions received from the Core Committee members, a Picnic was arranged for the Alumni’s on May 27. The Association members went to a Water Resort in Uttan. The members decided that all expenses pertaining to the picnic proper ie. Entrance fees, food and drink expenses would be met by them. The only expense met from the Association funds was for the snacks and transport – a bus that was hired for the day. It was an enjoyable experience.

AcknowledgementsThe Committee would like to place on record its appreciation of the unstinting support extended to your Association by the Principal Fr. Swamy. Also, to Mrs. Colette, who during her tenure as Vice Principal, extended her total support to your Association. A special thank you to all the Teachers, members of the School management and staff who helped your Association in the execution of its various projects and programmes. Without their support, this would not have been possible.Your Association would also like to thank all the students of the school, unnamed donors, Sunil Decorators and a whole host of volunteers who would appear literally out of the blue to assist your Association in its programmes.
