What is the Accountability Pillar? The Account-ability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators consisting

of surveys of students, parents and teachers on various aspects of quality; student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates; and

provincial assessments of student learning.

As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportuni-ty for Alberta Education, school authorities, and

schools to ensure that we’re equipping students for success. We highly value the opinions of parents and this is why we ask all parents who receive a

survey in the mail to fill it out and return it.

In January or February, parents of students in grades 4 will

receive a survey in the mail from Alberta Education.

We ask that you complete and return this survey in the postage paid return envelope provided by

the Alberta Education.

and host a “Mathathon”This is HFAs major school fundraiser and an important source of funds. The money that we raise helps support your child(ren)’s educational

come home with your child soon.

The University of Alberta Mixed Chorus is coming to BrooksMrs. Andrea Schell (HFA/CTK parent and teacher at SJC is an Alumni of this choir)

They are comprised of about 180 eighteen to twenty-one year olds, of which about 100 tour at the end of April/beginning of May. They are the oldest non-athletic group on campus and are under the direction of world-renowned conductor Dr. Robert de Frece, a professor emeritus at the U of A. Part of their mandate is to bring world class choral music to communities that might not otherwise get these experiences. They

travel with a full 8-octave handbell choir as well, and their school show is geared for teaching students more about music. They will be here May 5 to do a school show from 11-12(ish) and then will do an

evening show – their full concert – in the gym for the community. If you can help, please contact Andrea Schell at

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday and is a time of celebration and eating of rich foods made with eggs, sugar, and butter, which were traditionally prohibited during Lent. The term shrove is the past tense of shrive which means to obtain forgiveness of sins by confession and doing penance; in the past preparation forLent included going to confession. Other names for the day are Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, Tuesday of Carnival, Fastnacht Day, and Pancake Tuesday. Churches today celebrate Shrove Tuesday with Mardi Gras celebrations which may include pancake races and dinners of pancakes and other rich foods.
