DECEMBER, 2015

Because of your generosity and faithfulness,

during 2015 we received $558,270 in total

revenue, almost $4,000 over our budget

projections. Once again, your vestry, staff and

committees made wise decisions so that expenses

were managed with care and prudence (we

finished the year $14,813 under budget on the

expense side). All told, All Saints’ had a cash

surplus for the year in the amount of $19,400.

That surplus, together with accumulated surpluses

from previous years, will be used in 2016. Thank

you!

We received $219,342 in total capital campaign

revenue in 2015 and disbursed $256,186, resulting

in a reduction of the outstanding principal balance

of the building note of almost $166,500. Over

$53,000 of the disbursements came from special

gifts and insurance policy proceeds, all of which

were applied directly to the outstanding principal.

At year end, the principal balance equaled

$1,830,242. Thank you!

“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Lent offers us an opportunity to go deeper, to be more intentional, to explore and discover. In that spirit, I’m pleased to share details about a special program called Current Episcopal Events: Marriage Equality to be held at All Saints' on Wednesday nights in Lent. The aim of the series is to create a safe space so that accurate information and thoughtful analysis about various aspects of marriage equality and related issues might be presented and discussed. Here's the lineup: February 17 - I'll give a brief overview of the series and then share some thoughts about scripture. February 24 - The Rev. Canon David Johnson, a veteran member of the Diocese of Mississippi deputation to General Convention, will provide historical information about the actions of the Episcopal Church in the area of marriage equality, blessings of same-sex unions and the full inclusion of LGBTQ persons in the life of the church. March 2 - Our own Joy Johnson, MEd, LPC, who offers counseling services to individuals, couples and families in our area, will share thoughts concerning sexual orientation and the evolution in thinking regarding the offering of counseling support for LGBTQ persons and their families. March 9 - Lisa Shaw Roy, Professor of Law and Jessie D. Puckett, Jr., Lecturer at the Ole Miss Law School, whose academic interests include study of the intersection of law and the church, will present on Obergefell v. Hodges, the June 2015 Supreme Court decision which held that same-sex couples have a fundamental right to marry guaranteed by the Constitution. March 16 - Jessica Nelson, our organist/choirmaster and member of the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music of the Episcopal Church, will conclude our series by providing information and analysis of the various same-sex blessing and marriage liturgies that have been approved (in various forms) by the Episcopal Church. I think this is an outstanding lineup of speakers on a topic of great importance and relevance to the church. My hope is that after participating in this series youth and adults will have greater insight into the various facets of and issues relating to marriage equality, blessing of same-gender unions, etc. Please make plans to attend the series. We'll gather each week in the Parish Hall at 5:45 p.m., share a light meal, followed by the program. We'll conclude by 7:00 p.m. each evening. I encourage you to invite friends who might be interested in this series. Again this Lent, the Tupelo Ministerial Association will offer the Lenten Luncheon series on Thursdays during the season. We’ll gather at noon, share a meal and hear a reflection appropriate to the season. We start on Thursday, February 11 at Calvary Baptist Church. Hope to see you there.

Shalom, Paul+

News for this month is primarily about two groups of guests and visitors Saints’ Brew had in December and January. We had a site visit from the United Way team on January 12, 2016. They toured the kitchen and dining areas for Saints’ Brew and questioned us about our program. Both Paul and I were in attendance and answered any questions they posed. I also prepared a brief summary of our mission for informational purposes. The next step in the funding process is to have an interview with United Way funds distribution volunteers, which will take place in early February.

In mid-December, it was a group of Toyota employees who visited. There were approximately eight employees from different areas, which toured Saints’ Brew on a Thursday morning. Again, I met with them to discuss our mission and answered any questions they had. An added plus to this visit is that none of these workers had heard of Saints’ Brew. Hopefully, their visit will help spread the word and support for Saints’ Brew. This visit came about because we are a United Way agency and this group was touring other agencies during that day. A new mission that All Saints’ and Saints’ Brew is going to be starting in the next month is for our homeless guests. At the end of January, we are participating in the “Point in Time” count of homeless individuals in the Tupelo area. We will begin collecting and recording data from our homeless guests. The data will be entered into a database which agencies that serve and house homeless individuals will be able access. -Mona Warlick

From the Organist/Choirmaster &

Assistant for Music & Liturgy

As lots of y'all know, this past October I visited Virginia Theological Seminary for a symposium hosted by the Seminary's Center for Liturgy and Music. As one of 13 participants, I spent a few days working with noted musicians Marilyn Haskel, Ysaye Barnwell, and Alice Parker. The symposium dealt with song leading in a variety of contexts and charged each participant with developing and executing a project in their home parish or school.

My project will involve ALL of you! Each Sunday in Lent, immediately prior to the 10:45 service, we'll spend a few minutes learning a new piece of "paperless" music, meaning that it's a short piece with a simple text that's taught by rote. We'll use the piece we learn each Sunday somewhere in that service, and I hope that you'll take the music you learn with you throughout your week, and maybe even teach it to someone else.

To fulfill the requirements of this project, there will be some video and audio recordings made while we're learning and singing each week. Each symposium participant's recordings may be included in a documentary film that the Center for Liturgy and Music is making, so you may be on film!

Thanks in advance to all of you for your participation, and your support while I work on learning a new skill! Peace, Jessica

Our thanks to Lee Beard for his work on leveling the brick area in front of the Chapel. For his Eagle Scout service project, Lee removed all of the brick pavers, leveled out the dirt and then replaced the pavers so they would be level with the sidewalk. We very much appreciate Lee helping All Saints’ in this way; a big task, with great results!

CENTERING PRAYER THURSDAYS at 4:00 p.m.

In the Chapel

Centering Prayer is a method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, prayer in which we experience God's presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship.

Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer. Rather, it adds depth of meaning to all prayer and facilitates the movement from more active modes of prayer — verbal, mental or affective prayer — into a receptive prayer of resting in God. Centering Prayer emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God and as a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Him.

Beginning

Wednesday, February 17

Understanding the Sunday Scriptures

is a study of the Biblical texts appointed by the Revised Common Lectionary. Taught by Les Alvis, this class is made for those who wish

to journey deeper into the message and meaning of each Sunday’s lesson. The class critically analyzes the Biblical texts, asking questions such as: Who wrote the text and when was it written? What is the historical and social context of the text? What was the author’s intent in writing the text? The class then discusses what the texts tell us about God and what the texts mean for us today. This class meets in the south breakout room of the Parish Hall on Sundays at 9:30 a.m.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. . .

Children 3 years old-K In February, our youngest children will explore the parables, The Growing Seed and The Pearl of Great Price to help them expand their view of the Kingdom of God and to further contemplate the Kingdom as a mystery of planting, growth and harvest. Later in the month, they’ll explore the parable of the Found Sheep connecting it with the parable of the Good Shepherd to promote a sense of comfort and self-value, that if lost they will be found. We’ll also introduce to them Psalm 23 to give them language for prayer in response to God’s abundant gifts.

Children in 1st-3rd grades will revisit the parables of The

Mustard Seed and The Precious Pearl contemplating the Kingdom as a mystery of growth and transformation, empowered and directed by God’s strength and plan. Later in the month, they’ll explore the parable of The True Vine, reflecting on Jesus as the Vine, the Father as the Vinegrower, us as the branches and the identity of the life-giving sap that runs throughout the entire plant. They’ll also explore the parable of The Found Coin focusing on the preciousness of each coin, the diligent search of the woman, and her great rejoicing when the lost coin is found, inviting reflection on what it tells us about God and His love for us. At the end of the month, they’ll contemplate the power of forgiveness and reconciliation through the parable of The Forgiving Father.

Children in 4th-6th grades will explore the Genesis account

of the Fall/Sin for a Biblical understanding of temptation, evil, loss of innocence, consequences of sin and God’s constant love for humankind. They’ll explore the images of the Garden of Eden and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. These same images and others identified by the children are considered further as we try to identify images with similar or opposite meaning which are present during the time of Redemption and the transformation of sin and death to salvation and eternal life at the time of Parousia made possible through the obedience of Jesus.

Youth in 7th–12th grades As we made the turn into 2016, our youth kicked off the new year with some conversation about New Year’s resolutions. They spent some time talking about moving beyond faith resolutions to actively pursuing true spiritual maturity by learning to wait with patience and grace. They also explored how they can be more intentional about engaging in Christian mission.
