Welcome to St. James Cathedral!
We are glad to welcome you to St. James Cathedral. We are following the Center for Disease Control and City of Chicago guidelines for Phase 5 of the COVID-19 pandemic, and so:
· For those who are fully vaccinated, wearing masks and social distancing is optional. For those who are not fully vaccinated, wearing masks and social distancing is required.
· The side pews are set aside for those who wish to continue to be masked and socially distanced in worship.
· While we will resume offering the Peace physically, this is not an obligation. It is still acceptable to pass the Peace by a gesture if you do not feel comfortable with physical interaction at this point.
· For the time being, Communion will continue to be served in one kind (the bread) at standing stations instead of the altar rail.

OPENING ACCLAMATION
Presider Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. All And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.
The presider welcomes the people to the service.
Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.
The presider pronounces God’s forgiveness.

COLLECT OF THE DAY
Presider The Lord be with you. All And also with you. Presider Let us pray.
O gracious God, we remember before you today your servant and apostle James, first among the Twelve to suffer martyrdom for the Name of Jesus Christ; and we pray that you will pour out upon the leaders of your Church that spirit of self-denying service by which alone they may have true authority among your people; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Please be seated.

Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING
A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles. (11:27–12:3)
At that time prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. One of them named Agabus stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine over all the world; and this took place during the reign of Claudius. The disciples determined that according to their ability, each would send relief to the believers living in Judea; this they did, sending it to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.
About that time King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the festival of Unleavened Bread.)
The Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.
GRADUAL HYMN Hymnal 234
Words: Ambrose of Milan (340–397); ver. Hymnal 1940, alt. Music: Gonfalon Royal, Percy Carter Buck (1871–1947)

HOLY GOSPEL
Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. (20:20–28) All Glory to you, Lord Christ.
The mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favor of him. And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
The Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, Lord Christ.
SERMON The Very Rev. Dominic Barrington Dean of the Cathedral
Please stand. NICENE CREED
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Reader Lord, in your mercy, All Hear our prayer.
The presider concludes, praying
Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully accept the prayers of your people, and strengthen us to do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
PEACE
The presider says
The peace of the Lord be always with you. All And also with you.
The people greet each other in the name of the Lord.

GREAT THANKSGIVING
12
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For the wonderful grace and virtue declared in all your saints, who have been the chosen vessels of your grace, and the lights of the world in their generations. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your name:
SANCTUS from St. James Mass Buzard
Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
13
We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen
LORD’S PRAYER Hymnal S119
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to sing,

Please stand. The presider says
Let us pray.
Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. BLESSING
God, who has prepared for you a city with eternal foundations, bring you, with all the saints, to the eternal and triumphant joy of that city; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
DISMISSAL
Deacon Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. All Thanks be to God.
VOLUNTARY Pageant Sowerby
MUSIC NOTE
St. James Cathedral boasts an incredible legacy of composers. Dudley Buck, Peter Lutkin, Clarence Dickinson, and Leo Sowerby - leading voices in church music of their day - have all served as musicians here. Sowerby was the most prolific and successful of all, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1946. He composed Eternal light in honor of his predecessor, Clarence Dickinson.
Pageant is regarded as one of the most difficult organ pieces ever written. Sowerby composed it for the Italian virtuoso Fernando Germani, who embarked upon a US tour in 1931. Sowerby composed Pageant to test Germani’s formidable pedal technique. After learning the piece in his cabin on the boat to America, Germani wrote to Sowerby, “Now write me something really difficult!”
The voluntary is part of our act of worship, and thus we ask you to refrain from applause. The best way to show your appreciation is to listen attentively and use the music as a space for personal devotion. We invite you to greet the organist at the choir loft steps after the voluntary has concluded.
