RELICS OF THE TRUE CROSS

In the last weeks, our article discussed the Finding of the Holy Cross by St. Helen in Jerusalem - in the year 326 AD. In our parish, there used to be murals of this finding on the ceilings of the church - but those murals have been lost by the passage of time and repainting. So - what has happened to the Cross since St. Helen discovered it almost 1,700 years ago? Much of what I will tell you is history, but since this was so long ago, there are some legendary aspects also. Of course, when the Cross was discovered, many Christians wanted a "piece". The Bishop of Jerusalem probably sent some pieces off right away - to the Pope in Rome and to the Emperor in Constantinople. The desire to have such a precious relic is great. Nevertheless, the largest part of the Cross was kept in Jerusalem, and St. Helen had the Church of the Holy Sepulchre built in Jerusalem. This great church contains within itself both the Tomb of Jesus and the Hill of Calvary. A reliquary was fashioned, and a very large piece of the Cross was kept in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, together with the sign that had been nailed over Jesus' head. There are various historical records - including the ones of St. Cyril of Jerusalem and the writings of the pilgrim Egeria - which attests to ceremonies of the veneration of the Cross in Jerusalem in the second half of the 300's. And so, while there were already smaller pieces of the Cross in other places, the largest piece stayed in Jerusalem until the year 614 AD. In that year, Persians invaded the Holy Land, and destroyed all the churches (except the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem) and captured the relic of the Cross. Nevertheless, the Byzantine Emperor Hercalius defeated the Persian

Emperor in 628, and regained the relic of the Cross for Christian worship. There is an interesting story that he wanted to return the Cross to Jerusalem himself, that he began to carry it on his back to enter the city, but a mysterious force held him back. However, when he took off his crown and his royal garments, and dressed in penitential garb and went barefoot, he was able to return the Cross to

Jerusalem. You may know that the Holy Land suffered centuries of wars between Muslim and Christian forces. Over the centuries, continual pieces of the Cross were broken off and sent around the world. In around the year 1,000, the Crusades began - Christian forces from Europe entered the Holy Land to regain the holy sites back from Muslim hands. At this time, Christians in Jerusalem began to hide all movable relics, including the largest piece of the Cross, or send them to Constantinople or Rome. In 1187, the great

Battle of Hattin was waged, won by the Muslim forces under Saladin. It is said that Saladin took the largest relic of the Cross, which Christians then tried to ransom back. At present, there are large pieces of the Cross in various churches - the Church of the Holy Cross in Rome (where part of the sign is also kept) and the Greek monastery on Mt. Athos having the largest pieces, but also Notre Dame in Paris and the monastery of the Holy Cross near Vienna. Our parish is blessed to have two relics, which many people venerated during the Novena of the Holy Cross this year. We then put it in a place of prominence on the Feast of the Cross - Sept. 14 - so that all could see it. For to venerate the True Cross of Christ is to recognize that Jesus has saved us by His Blood poured out on the Cross.
