October 7, 2018 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Good People of Holy Cross, There is a story about two business men who were great rivals. When one got a computer the other got two. When one got a cellular phone the other got two. When one built a storehouse the other built two. One day an angel appeared to one of them and offered, "you can ask for anything you like and you will get it. However, your rival will get two of whatever you ask for?" "You mean" he asked, "if I asked for $1,000,000 I would get it?" "Yes you would get it." answered the angel, "but your rival will get $2,000,000." "How soon do I have to answer?" asked the businessman. "I will be back tomorrow morning for the answer." That night the businessman tossed and turned but when the angel came back he had his answer ready. "I will settle" he said, "for one blind eye!" Competition. Who’s in/who’s out. We’re right/you’re wrong. We learn that very early on. Ask any child who is the last one chosen for a game, or who is left out of the group. It’s not a nice place to be. As we grow older and become teenagers, we don’t want to “stand out” so we look, act, dress, and talk like everybody else. We love to see people make mistakes and fail. The bigger and more powerful that fall, well, that’s stuff that we talk about around the office cooler, or as we gather in small groups. The newspapers and media seem to go out of their way to find them, and as we get closer to mid-term election day, you don’t have to look far to see this kind of bashing of people. When we point a finger at someone else or delve into the personal downfall of another, do take note that when we are looking at someone else, we don’t have to look at ourselves. This week, let’s not compete and try to see Jesus in all people. Fr. Holy Cross’ Second Annual

AARP Driver Safety Course

The next AARP Driver Safety Course will be offered on Tuesday, October 16th from 9am 3pm. Participants pay at the door and must bring lunch.

Cost is $15 for AARP members (bring card) and $20 for non-members. Why take the course? The AARP Driver Safety course teaches valuable defensive driving techniques and provides a refresher about the rules of the road. Plus, by completing the classroom course you could qualify for an automobile insurance discount from your insurance company. Pre-registration is required and participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Register by calling the parish office at 770-939-3501.

October 26th 6:00pm -7:30 pm Sponsored by the Holy Cross Women’s Club

What is it? Instead of going house to house trick or treating, kids go from car to car (trunk to trunk) and adults pass out candy from the trunk or tailgate of their vehicle. It allows us to gather as a parish family and provide a safe and secure Halloween environment for our children.

What is needed? Kids (up to age 12) to come and " trunk or treat” and adults to bring their cars and treats. Make it fun! Decorate your trunk for the occasion, bring a jack-o-lantern, dress up! (Please be thoughtful of our younger children...no scary or gory costumes)

Please bring candy for 100 children. Women’s Club will provide extra candy if needed. All "trunks" need to be set up and ready to "treat" by 6pm.

If you would like to participate by providing your "trunk", please contact Angela Perry at 678-295-1536 or [email protected] or sign up at http://ow.ly/RjWw30lTgio

Friends of St. Martin Volunteers Canned Tuna, Canned Chicken and Canned Salmon are great sources of protein in many poor families. Children like them, mothers can use many different recipes and they cost a lot less than most fresh/frozen meats and seafood. For the past several months, these items have been in short supply at the Atlanta Food Bank. We want to buy large quantities (20 or more cases at a time) from supermarkets like Aldi’s and Food Depot at a good discount. But we need two or more volunteers per trip to pick up these special orders. Pickup times can be scheduled for mornings, afternoons or evenings depending on when volunteers are available. We can use the Holy Cross Van but a pickup truck is easier to load and unload. Our current volunteers are tied up with the normal tasks and we need two to ten new volunteers to help us with this important job. The more we have, the less hard work there is. Please help us feed the poor. Call Stan Zieg at 678-640-1976 or Mike Hardin at 770-461-3965 for details.
