DELHI TWP. — Township trustees willdecide the fate of a major project to converthuman waste to a fuel that can be burned togenerate power at their meeting March 15.
“This will be a ‘make or break’ vote,” saidSandra Diorka, Delhi Township Director ofPublic Services.
The board was presented with a full re-port on the project at its March 1 meeting, aswell as a recommendation for the most cost-effective way to make the project work.
The project involves a final treatment oftownship waste water into usable fuel, usinga de-watering mechanism and a sludge dry-ing process similar to what is being used in
Europe.“Other areas of the world are being told
this is the way to go and this is our opportu-nity,” Township Supervisor Stuart Goodrichsaid.
Goodrich said the project would be the fi-nal step in a master plan for the departmentof public works.
Two years ago the department finished itsbio-digester project that has been lauded byenvironmental agencies and led to statewideawards.
Goodrich said the sludge drying projectwas always meant to be the final stage ofmaking the treatment plant a complete cir-cle of renewable energy. It was unknownwhen the circle was going to be complete, but suddenly “green” stimulus money be-came available to the tune of $2.5 million.

Trustee Derek Bajemasaid the reason the moneyhas become available is be-cause others have turned itdown.
“Another community said‘no thanks’ to the DEQ dol-lars which bumped us up tobe eligible this year,” Bajemasaid. “I believe this demon-strates that most governmententities realize that the peo-ple they represent want themto be fiscally responsible.”
But Diorka says the proj-ect will save money andgenerate funds to offsetoperating and maintenancecosts for the de-watering ma-chine — which looks like asmall rocket — and the two400-foot greenhouses thatwill use solar power to drythe sludge.
She said as far as oper-ating costs, the sludge dry-ing process would be $20,000less than hauling it away.
“This doesn’t include theincome from selling the prod-uct,” she said. “This couldrange from $12,000 to $18,000per year.”

Test: Waste to fuel project
Key questionAlthough the township hasplanned for this type ofimprovement at thewastewater treatmentplant in the future, thefunding proposed to payfor it has been called a“rare opportunity.”
Q: Of the $2,580,000in money that doesn’thave to be paid by theTownship offered by thestate, how many othercommunities were offeredprincipal forgiveness thisyear?
A: Nine additionalcommunities were offeredprincipal forgiveness froma total of 13 projects. Thetotal amount of “Green”money available from thestate is $13 million, andDelhi’s share would be 20percent of it.
mit to allow for the burningof the product for fuel. MSUcan’t commit to being a cus-tomer as of yet because ofthe permit process, Diorkasaid. The total project cost is$5 million, which would bepaid for through a low-inter-est state revolving fund loan.
Half of the cost wouldcome back through stimulusmoney, and the townshipwould look for other grantmoney.
The cost to township res-idents would be a $1.20 flatfee per month on the sewerbill.

DELHI TWP. — Opposi-tion to the township’s plansto hook up its trail systemto Lansing’s has been circu-lating fliers in the township.
Similar to what happenedbefore township voters ap-proved a police and emer-gency services millage inNovember last year, the fli-ers have been appearingin newspaper tubes andaround mailboxes in thewest side of the township.
The Delhi TownshipBoard of Trustees will beholding a public hearing onMarch 15 concerning a grantapplication by the townshipto the state to help fund its“north connector” trail.
For years, the townshiphas been planning and con-structing a path that con-nects to the Lansing RiverTrail to the north and Hay-
hoe Trail to the south, whenfunds have been available.
The first portions ofthe trail were completedin recent years, from HoltRoad to Willoughby Roadand along Cedar Street be-tween Dallas and HolbrookDrive.
The township is now pur-suing construction of whatis being called the “NorthTrail Connector.”
That pathway will con-tinue the trail, which endsat Willoughby Road, and ex-tend it to the Lansing RiverTrail at the corner of Jollyand Aurelius Roads.
The Lansing River Trailconnects to Hawk IslandPark, Potter Park Zoo,downtown Lansing, OldTown and through the MSUcampus.
The flier has the DelhiCharter Township logo on itand asks if residents wanttheir money spent on a trail,
but it doesn’t identify whoor what organization is dis-tributing it.
Township Supervisor Stu-art Goodrich said he expectssome residents to attend thepublic hearing, but doesn’tknow how many will bethere to oppose it versuspraise it.
“We’ve been told throughresidents and in surveys thata trail is needed,” he said.“One resident said he can’twait to be able to ride hisbike all the way to work.”
The township has appliedfor a grant that would payfor $1 million of the $2.6 mil-lion cost of the trail project.
It will also likely applyfor another $500,000 grantto pay for more of it, accord-ing to Community Develop-ment Director Tracy Miller.
The rest of the cost wouldbe paid for by the DelhiDowntown DevelopmentAuthority.

EAST LANSING, MI | HOW MANYFRIENDS HAVE TOLD YOU THEY LOVE
THEIR HEARING AIDS? Now how manyhave said their hearing aids makesome sounds too loud, don’t workwell in noise, or they can’t tell if theyare really helping them hear at all?Audiologists and dispensers try tomake hearing aids function the bestthey can to give the patient a goodoutcome. But there were always a lotof difficulties surrounding comfortand understanding of speech.
Let’s say you havea small child,an average sizedwoman, and a verylarge man, all withthe same hearingloss. All hearingaids would beprogrammed the
same way, according to the hearingaid manufacturers software. But theear canals themselves must figureinto the process, as well. Withoutdiving into too much physics, earcanal size and shape for the childwould be quite small. The womanwould be close to the average sizeear canals and the man’s ear canalswould be quite large and long. Thechild would receive too much powerfrom the hearing aids, the woman’sfitting would be close, and the man’shearing aids would seem very quiet. All hearing aid manufacturers basetheir science off the average ear. Butno one has the average ear.Live speech mapping is the latestinnovative approach to hearing aidfitting which uses natural speech toshow how effective digital hearing
aids are in helping you to hearspeech. With digital speech mapping,an actual speech signal, not tones orhissing sounds, is used to test thehearing aids while inserted in thepatient’s ears. This allows for the shapeand size of the patient’s ear canals to beincluded in the fitting process, as wellas using the most important signal wehear, speech. For hearing aid fittingsto be successful, speech must beappropriately amplified with respectto loudness, clarity, and comfort.Soft speech should be perceived assoft, moderate speech sounds shouldbe perceived as moderate, and loudspeech sounds should not reach thepatient’s discomfort level.Speech mapping helps to provide
a clear “visual” sense of the hearingloss, and the benefits or perhaps thelimitations that your current hearingaids offer in relation to actual speech. While wearing hearing aids, a tinyprobe microphone is inserted intothe ear canal while the hearing aidsare running, then a stimulus (voices/music) is used to measure the outputand shows if the hearing aids areamplifying sounds appropriately. TheLive Speech Map is displayed on amonitor through easily-understoodgraphics so that you can actuallysee sounds that are missing and bepresented with a clear visual senseof hearing loss and aided benefitsrelating to actual speech. It allowsyou to see graphically just how theaid is performing in a live, real worldenvironment.Once we see what sounds you’re
missing, we’ll be able to tune yourpersonal hearing aids until it restoresthe missing speech patterns andtones. So, not only will you hear thedifference a hearing aid makes withyour speech, you’ll be able to see thesounds being restored visually aswell. A successful hearing aid fittingshould be a dynamic, patient-centered
process. To achieve optimum success, the dispensing professional musttailor the process to meet the needs, abilities, and desires of the patient. If you are wondering if your hearingaids, or those of your loved ones, aremeeting their current needs, pleasecall Accuquest Hearing Center at
877-560-3786. Request a no chargeconsultation using the Auricle DigitalSpeech Mapping System. This systemhas set the acknowledged industrystandard for hearing instrumentfitting equipment. This can lead toa better insight into exactly howhearing aids are performing.

Holt among middle school bands to compete
It may not be the pretti-est sport to watch, but forthe Holt Ram PowerliftingTeam, this was somethingthat they will remember fora while.
The Rams captured theirfirst ever powerlifting Re-gional Championship onFeb. 26 at Shepherd HighSchool.
On their way to the mem-orable victory, Al Slamer’screw edged out defendingstate champ, Lake Orion, bytwo team points.
Leading the way for theRams was Mike Bologna(114 pounds), Devin Salyer(123) and Wes Dorin (170),who all took home first-place honors in their re-spected weight class.
Second place finishers in-cluded: C.J. Waits, KennyRogers and Kari Leger. MikeSmith rounded out the topfinishers with a third-placefinish at 242 pounds.
Ram powerlifters win titleOn the girls side, Erich-
ka Culp and Katina Legerplaced first, while GabrielleSampi placed second andKhiara Duke took third.
All of these athletes qual-ified for the State Champi-onship meet, which will beheld on March 18-19 in Fen-ton.
MASON — It’s never easy asa coach to see your seniors playtheir final high school game.
What makes it even moredifficult for Doug Harkema andthe Holt Rams, is that their threeseniors were all exceptionalplayers.
Those three seniors puttogether another memorable
effort as they won anotherdistrict title, but unfortunatelythe Holt Rams saw their statetitle hopes come to an end witha 52-42 loss to Niles in a ClassA regional semifinal at MasonHigh.
Senior guard Robyn Robinsonscored a team-high 14 points andEmily Klauka had 12 points andsix rebounds for the Rams, whofinished their season with 15-8record.
“I’m extremely proud of thisteam, win or lose,” Holt coachDoug Harkema said. “This was agame of makes and misses, andin the end, they just made moreshots down the stretch than wedid.”
Despite getting down earlyon, the Rams stayed withinstriking distance throughout thisgame and were able to cut thedeficit to just three points earlyon in the fourth quarter.
But Niles went on a 7-0 runwith just under six minutes togo, which proved to be too muchfor the Rams to overcome.
“When you’re playing frombehind the whole game andthen cutting it to one or twopoints, you’re just waiting forthat one big play that’s going toput you ahead,” Harkema said.“Unfortunately for us, that onebig play just didn’t happen.”
Maureen Craig scored a
game-high 21 points and NicholeSly added 16 points and fourassists for the Vikings (18-6).
Niles held Holt leading scorerMandy Johnson to just six pointsin the final game of her brilliantcareer.
“She is one of our seniorswho gave everything she had tothis team,” Harkema said. “I’mextremely proud of this groupand what they were able toaccomplish here at Holt.”
