    FODDER FOR SALE

  • A fantastic start to 2021 with an entry of

211 calves being 16% up on the same week

    in 2020.

Overall top call of the day was £420 for the

best of a superb run of Blue & Limousin (12-

14 week old) calves in from John & Mark

Elliot of Bradford with James Weeks &

Family close up at £415 and the best of a

line up of 30 from Knapman Farms of South Molton at £400.

Best baby Blue bulls came in from Rob Veale of Halwill at £385 (39 days) and

Messrs Furse of Ashwater at £350 for the pick of their team. Messrs Knapman

Farms took the top 10 slots in the Limousin bull section with the best at £338

and averaging £296 with their Simmentals hitting £355 (x2) with Messrs

Bulled & Son of Barnstaple at £195 (31 days) and Trevor Wellington at £172

and £160. Plenty of Angus calves today topped at £365 (x4) for James Weeks

of Hartland and the best South Devon bull at £270 for Rachel Poole.

The heifer trade was good but not quite as strong as last week’s flyer with

the Weeks Family once again leading the way at £305 for their best Blue heifers with Messrs GT Allin of

Bideford at £340, John Elliot at £340 and the pick from Knapman Farms at £302.

Black & White bulls saw spirited bidding with the best to £202 from Baxworthy Farms whilst the pick of the

under 42 day old calves at £80 for Rachel Poole, £75 for Messrs Tillier of Lifton and £75 for Churchill Farms

on Exmoor. The new introduction of calves from Arla producers “having to ensure that their calves are not

sent to slaughter before the age of 56 days” met a 70% reduction in price for those calves as we only had 1

byuer willing to purchase them under these rules.

Speaking after the sale Kivells Auctioneer James Morrish said “What a really good start to 2021 it was in

the calf section. Buyers and sellers travelled to Holsworthy from Honiton, Plymouth, Truro, Barnstaple

    and Exmoor.”

NEXT WEEK – CURRENT ENTRIES INCLUDE 30 STRONG CALVES FROM EXMOOR.

  • RURAL REFLECTION JANUARY 2021 Here we go! 2020 has passed and we look forward to a brighter and less restricted 2021. I appreciate January will be extremely difficult for many but there is plenty to be positive about going forward. Finally the UK has struck a deal with Europe in which praise has to be given to our Prime Minster. From what I hear and understand the deal is progressive for the UK and importantly for our farmers we can continue to trade with Europe without any export tariffs. This coupled with the additional cheaper and less complicated Covid-19 Vaccine which begins its role out today, is a huge mile stone in the fight against Covid-19. Let’s hope that by Easter we will be back to some normality.

With regards to professional matters a large proportion of Basic Payment Scheme claimants should now have received their Basic Payment Scheme payments. As always please please please, check these amounts. Look in detail at the Claim Statement that arrived in the post and compare the figures on the Claim Statement to the Basic Payment Scheme Application you submitted back in the Spring. If you have any queries, give your Kivells office a call and we can input the data and confirm your payments are correct. If indeed they are incorrect a payment query form needs to be submitted to the RPA as soon as possible.

Staying with the Basic Payment and as Claire Quick mentioned in our December Rural Reflection we are about to see significant changes with the Basic Payment Scheme. The final payment year is to be 2027, with reductions starting in 2021. The table below sets out the cuts for the next four scheme years (see below).

    Going forward the Agricultural Bill sees the phasing out of the Basic Payment Scheme, Delink of Direct Payments (BPS) and the introduction of the New Environmental Management Scheme. DEFRA have outlined the key changes with the main aspects being;

Payments to be delinked from land in 2024.

Possible exit scheme with lump sum payments equivalent to remaining BPS payments to farmers who leave the sector.

Cross compliance to remain until 2024, when it will then be replaced.

Alterations to the inspections regime including ‘greater communication rather than instant penalties’.

Money taken away from BPS to be reinvested in other schemes for farmers

On other matters, the Mid-Tier Countryside Stewardship continues to prove to be a positive scheme. Businesses throughout the South West have come to the conclusion that the Mid-Tier Countryside Stewardship allows for additional income relating to land parcel options, with the other significant benefit being the vast amount of capital works available (in many cases being livestock fencing).

It is worth mentioning that the Countryside Stewardship Scheme will continue to be available with the last new applications being accepted in 2023. Anyone that has a Countryside Stewardship Agreement that starts after January 2021, who gets offered a new Environmental Land Management Scheme, will be able to withdraw and transfer to the new scheme with no penalty. Therefore anyone considering applying for a new Countryside Stewardship agreement in 2021, it is worth looking to see what options are out there. I hasten to add as a firm we have put together some wonderful Countryside Stewardship agreements that have provided significant additional incomes but also large capital investment that has improved farm infrastructure considerably.

2020 saw a massive year for Kivells and the farm and land market with 2020 proving one of our best years (for transactional activity) in a decade both in terms of farms launched and farms sold. Going forward 2021 in shaping up to follow suit with a

  • number of farms scheduled to hit the open market. With continued outside investment and a great serge for property in the West Country we remain confident that the land and farms market remains buoyant for 2021. As ever, if you require a confidential discussion on any aspects of purchasing or selling, please contact your local Kivells office.

Utility companies remain busy with various ongoing projects throughout the South West which often means land and farming businesses witnessing damages to land. Although not advised by the incoming utility company, we as agents are here to ensure you are fairly compensated for all costs created from the required works. Whether it’s a cost for the loss of Winter Wheat in the ground or your time spent on the phone dealing with problems which has arisen from the works whereby quite frankly you have other, more important matters that require your attention. The incoming utilities are often of the opinion a few grass seeds will put matters right. When you sit down and work out the costs it is often well in excess. Please get in contact with us if you have a utility company ‘Knocking on the door’ looking to enter your property. Negotiations and your concerns need to be ironed out from day one.

Finally, the Kivells machinery sales team both here at Exeter and Holsworthy have reported an exceptional 2020 with onsite sales being conducted throughout the South West often under very difficult circumstances relating to Covid-19. One of the highlights of the year being the Retirement Sale of Dayment & Skelton Agricultural Engineers with over 1100 lots going under the hammer. 2021 is looking to follow suit combined with our busy collection sales at both Holsworthy and Exeter. If you require information and advice on the sale of machinery whether online, onsite or at our collective sales please contact the machinery sales team. We will be pleased to offer confidential advice ensuring strong prices coupled with a well organised, safe and professional sale.

As I finished this month’s Rural Reflection the BBC news app has just pinged to inform me that Boris will be addressing the nation at 8pm tonight. Please remain safe and I wish you all the very best for 2021.
