M-F ATHLETIC CO. PO BOX 8090 CRANSTON, RI 02920
Dear Fellow Cross Country Fans, It is indeed an honor for M-F Athletic to again be a sponsor of the NJSIAA Cross Country Championships. Most of us will only get to see the start and finish of these races today, but make no mistake; there is a lot that happens in between. Just as in life, these athletes are learning that it is the journey along the way that matters most. The hard work and perseverance that it takes to be successful here will go a long way towards preparing them for many future challenges. To the athletes and coaches – good luck and continued success in pursuing all of your goals. To the parents and fans – cheer the runners on with pride and the knowledge that they are giving it their best. To the officials, volunteers and park personnel – thank you for providing a safe, fair and enjoyable experience for the athletes and spectators alike. To the winners – congratulations! You have achieved the highest level of success against some of the best competition in the country and have earned a place in New Jersey sports history. Since 1960 M-F has been involved in the sports of track & field and cross country as an equipment supplier and a supporter through our many educational programs. The journey continues for us as well. Enjoy the meet! Sincerely,
Jim Grogan Mid Atlantic Sales Westfield, NJ 800-420-1909 [email protected]

MEET OF CHAMPIONS PREVIEWS BOYS By JIM LAMBERT Will Devin Hart of Point Pleasant Boro put his name alongside some of New Jersey’s all-time greats? Can anyone stop NJ #1/US #10 Christian Brothers Academy from winning a second straight title and increasing its state record total to a mind-boggling 23 titles? Those questions and more will be answered when the state’s best clash in what has the makings of yet another thrilling NJSIAA Meet of Champions when the 47th annual meet is held on Saturday at Holmdel Park. The Stanford-bound Hart, who owns a Holmdel personal best of 15:34 (No. 20 in course history), is the overwhelming favorite to become just the seventh boy to win two straight titles. The other six are Jason DiJoseph of Paul VI (1987-1988), Bryan Spoonire of Asbury Park (1989-1990), Bob Keino of Ridgewood (1992-1993), Steve Slattery of Mount Olive (1996-1997), Mohamed Khadraoui of JFK Paterson (2002-2003), and Craig Forys of Colts Neck (2005-2006). But Hart doesn’t just want to win. He wants to do something historical in his final XC race on N.J. soil. He said he wants to go under 15:20! That’s something just five guys have ever done. The only sub 15:20 runners at Holmdel are all legends of the sport-Edward Cheserek of St. Benedict’s Prep (14:53 in 2011), Joe Rosa of West Windsor-Plainsboro North (14:56 in 2009), Jim Rosa of West Windsor-Plainsboro North (15:15 in 2010), Forys (15:16 in 2006), and DiJoseph (15:17 in 1988). Hart, who held back last week when he repeated as Group 2 champion in 16:00, is also aiming to raise his career total to five M of C titles. He won the outdoor 3,200 in 2017, and last year completed the distance running triple crown by winning M of C titles in all three seasons (XC, 3,200 indoors and 3,200 outdoors). Hart’s biggest competition should come from Jack Stanley of Mendham and Tim McInerney of CBA. Stanley dropped his Holmdel PR by 15 seconds when he won his second straight Group 3 title in 15:45 in very windy conditions at Holmdel. McInerney finished second to Hart at the Shore Conference Championships in 14:59, 12 seconds behind Hart.
In the team competition, CBA, which has captured seven of the last eight titles, is favored to increase its state record to 23 championships, which would equal the number titles the entire rest of the state has won combined (there was no team scoring at the first M of C in 1972). CBA has won 18 more titles than any other proram. The team with the second most titles is Paul VI with four. CBA, which held out some of its top runners last week, including McInerney and Luke Reid, still rolled to the state Non-Public A to raise its state record to 29 state titles. Transfer Shaw Powell led the charge for the Colts by winning in 16:14. With McInerney, Reid, and Powell all on the line, CBA has the firepower to throw down an epic performance. There is a very strong field that will attempt to dethrone CBA, led by NJ #2 Kingsway, NJ #3 Haddonfield, NJ #4 Westfield, NJ #5 Mendham, and NJ #6 Cherokee. Kingsway, seeking to become the first boys champ from Gloucester County, finished second to CBA last year, 80-96. With five of its top six graduating last year, Kingsway reloaded to win its second straight Group 4 title last week, 91-97 over Westfield. Kingsway also finished first in the team merge, 225.5 to 235 over CBA. Westfield and Group 2 champion Haddonfield are each aiming for its second title. Westfield won in 1976 and Haddonfield captured the title in 2001. Mendham, the Group 3 champ for the second straigt year, and Cherokee are seeking its first titles.
GIRLS By JIM LAMBERT Abby Loveys and Alexa Westley could push each other to one of the fastest races in course history, and defending champion and NJ#1 North Hunterdon is favored to add to its rich legacy in what promises to be another memorable girls race at Saturday's 47th NJSIAA Meet of Champions at Holmdel Park. There have only been three races in Holmdel Park history where two girls have broken 18 minutes, but Loveys and Westley appear to be on the verge of making it four. Loveys, a senior at Randolph who won the 1,600 at the Meet of Champions last spring, comes into this race as the favorite, and a victory would virtually lock up one greatest seasons in state history. Loveys has torched every course she’s run on this season, including course record runs at Garret Mountain (17:41) and Greystone (17:08), and is the only undefeated runner in the race. This will be the second meeting of the season between Loveys and Westley, who are each seeking their first M of C cross-county title. At the Eastern States race at the Manhattan Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park last month, Loveys was first over the 2.5-mile course in a N.J. record 14:03, and Westley, a senior at Warren Hills, placed third in 14:24. In blustery conditions at the Group Championships last week at Holmdel, Loveys and Westley weren’t pushed and both won big as they ran the two fastest times of the day. Loveys had a lot left after she won the Group 4 title for the second straight year in a Group 4 record 17:52, No. 11 all-time at Holmdel Park. Westley won the Group 3 race in 18:09, just off her Holmdel PR of 18:05 that she ran last month at the Shore Coaches Invitational. The Wisconsin-bound Westley, who has won the last two outdoor M of C 3,200 titles, has finished ahead of Loveys at the past two M of C cross-country races. In 2016, Westley was fourth and Loveys 12th, and last year Westley was sixth and Loveys seventh. Something else to keep an eye on in this race is the N.J. Holmdel record of 17:28, set by Megan Venables of Highland Regional at the state Group 3 race in 2010. That was the overall course record until Katelyn Tuohy of North Rockland in New York lit up Holmdel with a mind-numbing 16:21 at the Shore Coaches Invit. last month.
Could Loveys and Westley threaten the 17:28 by Venables? Time will tell. While Loveys and Westley are the clear favorites in the races, don’t forget about Nicole Vanasse and Chloe Gonzalez. Vanasse, a junior at Pingry, is the top returning finisher from the M of C last year after placing third in 18:23. Vanasse, the indoor M of C 3,200 winner last winter, wasn’t challenged last week when she won her second straight Non-Public A title last week in 18:31. Vanasse seems poised to make a huge drop in time and could be right in the thick of things. Gonzalez, a junior at North Hunterdon, has come back strong after missing the first half of the season as she came back from a stress fracture. Gonzalez, fifth last year, ran a Holmdel PR of 18:23 when she placed second to Loveys last week in Group 4. In addition to Loveys, Westley, Vanasse, and Gonzalez, there were three other runners who broke 18 at the Group Championships - Emily Nugent of North Hunterdon (18:34), Manon Stephen of Ridge (18:46), and Daisy Liljegren of Northern Highlands (18:52). In the team competition, barring a big upset, North Hunterdon should hoist the championship trophy for second straight year and eighth time overall. The seven girls M of C titles won by North Hunterdon is the second most in meet history behind the nine won by 2014 champion Red Bank Catholic. A victory by North Hunterdon, led by the potent 1-2 combination of Gonzalez and Nugent, would also give the Skyland Conference nine titles in the last 12 years. North Hunterdon built a dynasty in the 1980's when then coach Bob McGivney led the Lions to six championships in seven years (1980, '81, '83, '84, '85, and '86). How big of a favorite is North Hunterdon? At the state Group Championships last week, North Hunterdon won the Group 4 race by 31 points over NJ #2 Ridgewood. And North Hunterdon finished 70 points ahead of Ridgewood on the team merge. Ridgewood is chasing its third M of C title (it won in 1992 and 1999). Other teams to keep an eye on include NJ #3 South Brunswick, NJ #4 Metuchen, which won the state Group 2 title last week, NJ #5 Colts Neck, which won its third straight Group 3 title last week and captured the M of C title in 2006, , and Group 2 runner-up and NJ #6 Holmdel. Voorhees, which advanced as wild card after placing fourth in Group 2, is making its 22nd straight appearance in the M of C. Voorhees has won four M of C titles (1990, 2007, 2008, and 2012).
