Imagine a shadow puppet stage that invites you to explore the history of art and experience the thrill of bringing art to life.

Picture a gorgeously painted jungle a la Rousseau and imagine your-self transported to another world.

Envision a wacky Rube Goldberg gadget that moves and sings and clangs while teaching about sound and musical scales.

This is our vision for Creative Connections. Colorful mobiles illustrat-ing the elements of art and principles of design will hang from the ceiling. Interactive exhibits designed by local artists and tables full of art supplies, projects and activities will greet visitors. On-the-road carts will engage children and adults outside of the Arts Council’s walls at schools, in neighborhoods and during community events. Based in what was formerly our Mainstreet Gallery, this bright, creative space will inspire curiousity, play and artistic expression.

Because West Michigan has developed a reputation for excellence in art, and particularly design, the Arts Council plans to dedicate a space in our center to focus on these themes. Children today are growing up in a highly visual world, surrounded by the images of television, vid-eos, advertising and other media. The human brain has a visual cortex that is five times larger than the auditory cortex. Is it any wonder that students respond so positively when they have opportunities to learn through the visual arts?

We believe that a children’s museum specifically targeting our area’s most celebrated talents of art and design is a much needed addition to our center and community. We are so excited about this fresh en-deavor, and we hope you’ll join us as we pursue a creative community.

The Nutcracker Sweet is a story-time brunch in a winter fairy-tale land of ballerinas, nutcrackers and toy soldiers. Uncle Drosselmeyer will narrate the story of the Nutcracker while families enjoy a delicious meal. The event is directed at ages 3-7, but all ages are welcome! Children should bring their favorite toy or teddy bear and a grown up.

The Holland Area Arts Council offers diverse and exciting classes for all skill levels, and our instructors have impressive credentials and extensive teaching experience. We offer scholarships for those who qualify. For more information call (616) 396-3278 or email helpdesk@hollandarts.org.

Refund Policy. No spots are reserved without full payment or scholar-ship forms. To receive a check refund, withdrawals must be requested at least 5 business days prior to the start of class, and a $10 process-ing fee will be retained. To receive class credit, withdrawals must be requested before the second class. If you have questions about class placement, classes that are full, age appropriateness, or other issues that are not addressed here, contact our Program Director, Mary Sundstrom, at mary@hollandarts.org.

Make-Up Classes. If a class session is cancelled by the Arts Council, a make-up class will be scheduled. Generally, make-up classes are held the week following the last scheduled class.

Photo Permission. By registering for a class, you agree to allow the Arts Council to photograph you or your child for promotional purposes. If you do not wish to be photographed, please contact the Program Director at (616) 396-3278 or mary@hollandarts.org.

The Holland Area Arts Council serves as the Regranting Coordinator for Allegan, Mason, Muskegon, Oceana and Ottawa Counties. The Minigrant program is a grant-giving partnership funded by the State of Michigan through the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) and administered by agencies in each region of the state. Minigrants provide funds for locally-developed, high-quality arts and cultural projects: special opportunities to address local arts and cultural needs and to increase public access to arts and culture. Part of the Holland Area Arts Council’s role in the community is to oversee public art projects. These initiatives give artists an opportunity to display their talents and creativity while drawing the public into a lively and robust conversation about the arts.

For 18 years this beautiful facility, situated in Downtown Holland, has been the cornerstone of the arts and the intersection of Holland’s prin-cipal cultural organizations. The Holland Symphony Orchestra, Holland Chorale, Holland Symphony Youth Orchestra, Holland Junior Strings, the Holland Friends of Art, Tulipanes Latino Art and Film Festival, West Michigan Fiber Arts Guild, West Michigan Puppetry Guild, All for One Dance Company, Ambrose and Michigan Academy of Folk Music have all been a part of the Arts Council’s creative family and home.
