NICKY’S NOTES
Rockefeller Plaza has
nothing on us! We have to thank our Shelter Operations
team of Bob, Michael, Brian and
Mo for erecting and decorating the tree. As our President
and CEO Christopher
Agostino stated—it rivalled those in fancy retail stores
and malls! It was also nice to see our
volunteers Judy Perez (Pet Boutique)and Debbie Reidbord
(Customer Service) getting into the holiday spirit. Santa’s little helpers never looked so
good!
This month the Getting to Know You section focuses on our Education team of Caroline,
Darlene, Carrie and Katie. Check out their profiles on Pages 7 & 8. And meet Leana our
new Walk Coordinator on Page 4.
And, as some have already mentioned the regularity of emails is heating up with the Walk
fast approaching. Don’t hate me! We’ll be requesting and recruiting Volunteers to assist us with not only the Walk but a multitude of events
and on site opportunities leading up to the Walk. Not only is it our largest fundraising event of the
year, its also a lot of fun!

A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM OUR SENIOR VP OF OPERATIONS, MARY STEFFEN.
Goodbye 2015 and Hello 2016!
While we had a very good year last year and everyone should be proud of what we
accomplished and their contributions, it is always exciting to look forward to a new year and even greater success. We participated in
our 1st “Clear the Shelters” event with NBC and adopted out 167 pets in 1 day, we partnered with Broward County Animal Care
and Adoptions to spay/neuter 4,000 cats in targeted zip codes thru Mission Catpossible, we increased our rescue
relationships and released 125 dogs and 4 cats to rescue. We introduced Snuggle Delivery to the world, we hosted our 1st
Yappy Hour, and we got a digital x-ray machine donated.
The number of programs and services that we provide to the community with our limited budget are only possible because of the
number of volunteers and their contributions. In addition to the sheer volume of hours that volunteers spend both in
and out of the shelter on our behalf, our volunteers are great advertisers and distributors of information about the pets in
our care and about us as an organization. Our positive image is a direct
reflection of all of you.
This year we will be redecorating our
community cat rooms, entering into another spay/neuter partnership with Broward County Animal Care and Adoptions, participating in
Clear the Shelters 2016, and continuing to look for ways to keep more pets in their homes, re-home as many as we can and
continue to support our pet community in any way feasible.
A big thank you again for all that you
do!
YOGA UPDATE
Classes have been extended to 1½ hours. The first hour is dedicated to instructional yoga and the last ½ hour will entail a relaxation
and meditation session.
The $10 fee per class is waived for our
HSBC volunteers.
SHELTER UPDATES & NEWS
Please remember that sharing
information and pictures about the pets
in our care can only be done with the
dogs and cats that are actually up for
adoption. Please don’t share pictures
and information about pets in closed
parts of the building until they make it to
the adoption area and then share away!!! R

TEAM BUILDING
FURRY STYLE
Do you know of a company that loves animals and wants to make a
difference? Then let us introduce you to five programs that you can share with friends, family and their
workplaces!
PAWSITIVE SERVICE DAY is for adult
groups of 10 – 25 people to volunteer at
the shelter on a weekday 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. The day includes a presentation,
tour, working with the dogs and cats and an overview of the annual Walk for the Animals. The cost is $25 per person.
Contact Darlene at 954-266-6848 or [email protected] to book
your service day or for more details.
SHELTER PETS COME TO YOU during
an HSBC Snuggle delivery! This is exactly
what it sounds like. Not everyone can reap the benefits of snuggling with puppies and kittens so we came up with the idea to
bring the adoptable little ones to you at your workplace. You can schedule our furry
friends for a Snuggle delivery for a minimum donation of $500 to the shelter. For more details visit
humanebroward.com/snuggles
YAPPY HOUR at the HSBC
is a new program that
enables businesses to bring their employees to the shelter for a night of fun and
a chance to help out the homeless animals. Yappy hour is for groups of 10 or more
(maximum 100) that would like to come and join us on a weekday from 5:00 – 7:00
p.m. for wine, beer and cheese along with a tour, puppy/kitty snuggle and making toys for the homeless animals. The cost is
$35.00 per person. Contact Katie at 954-266-6875 with any questions or learn
more under the “Get Involved” tab on the website.
OFFICE CATS are ready to move in. This
unique program allows offices and small businesses in South Florida to essentially act as cat adoption counselors and foster a
cat until they find it a new home. The HSBC will match your business with a cat that will
interact well with your employees, customers, and office environment. The shelter provides food, litter box, bed, toys,
veterinary care and other supplies. The employees provide the TLC. Interested?
Email [email protected].
JOIN A PACK…the Walk
for the Animals is the
shelter’s largest annual fundraiser and you and your coworkers can join
together to make a team or “pack” and raise funds and awareness for
the animals. The Walk is March 5, 2016 and to learn more visit walk4theanimals.com to sign up.

BUNNY BASICS
Did you know that rabbits can be trained to
use a litter box? Did you know that pet rabbits can live 10 or more years? Hop on
over and learn about rabbit care and behavior at Bunny Basics at HSBC on January 30th, 2016 from 10:30 a.m. until
11:30 a.m. Please RSVP to Carrie Neff at
The HSBC is fortunate to have a feeding partnership with Purina. We are only one of a handful of shelters nationwide that
has this unique partnership. They provide us with all the Purina ONE dry food
and canned food that we need, as well as Tidy Cat and Yesterday News litter for our feline guests. When we feed the animals
the dogs are given dry Purina ONE with canned food mixed in. The cats are given
dry Purina ONE and in a separate dish are given wet food. It is very important when the animals are adopted that you
share this with the adopters. We want to ensure the pets eat the same food when
they go to their new home. All adopters are given a bag of Purina ONE that is age
appropriate for the pet and canned or wet food is available for purchase in the Pet
Boutique.
SHELTER UPDATES & NEWS
MEET...Leana Suarez our Walk for the Animals
Coordinator. Leana started at the Humane Society of
Broward County in October 2007. After moving from New York, she found herself looking for a forever friend. It
just so happened at the time that she was adopting, the shelter was hiring for a Customer Service
Representative. She later worked her way up to Development Assistant and was recently promoted to
Walk for the Animals Coordinator which changes her focus to help fundraise for our furry friends.
Leana mentioned the satisfying part about working at the shelter is the
money she helps raise for our great organization helps give back to special programs for the pets in our care and for the community.

J.R. DUNN JEWELERS
The partnership with
J.R. Dunn Jewelers
has proven successful
with 6 dogs adopted
to date! J.R. Dunn
sponsors the adoption
fee and promotes a
selected pet on a
radio spot, their website and their social
media pages. The “Diamond in the Ruff”
campaign will run through October
2016. The featured pet can also be found
each week on the HSBC website and
Facebook page.
NEW SECURITY
You may have noticed
a new employee
strolling through the
shelter. Mr. Trevor
McDonald will be here
on a part-time basis,
Mon-Fri from 3pm to
7pm as an unarmed
security guard. He will be stationed
primarily in the Animal Admissions
Department; however, he will be patrolling
our facility throughout his shift. For this
reason, please make sure that you wear
your HSBC badges and designated
volunteer uniform shirts while at the shelter
so he can easily identify our volunteers.
And...while we’re on the subject of
security
CELL
PHONES
As a general reminder, please do not
leave your cell phones on counter tops,
desk tops etc. throughout the shelter.
These items are highly desirable and
easily pocketed.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU...
Caroline Crane is the Vice President of Education. “Twenty
two years ago I found the job that was perfect for me at the
Humane Society of Broward County! I went to college and was
certified in Elementary Education. I was a teacher in Michigan
although I found my passion volunteering on the weekend at a
shelter in Michigan. Before I knew it I was working as a Vet
Technician at the shelter! It was the hardest work I’ve ever
done. But it wasn’t quite the right fit. In 1994, I moved to
Florida and was teaching school. I immediately signed up to
volunteer in the clinic at the Humane Society of Broward
County on the weekends. About 8 months later I saw a post
for Director of Education. I couldn’t believe such a job
existed. It matched my love for animals and teaching in one job. In 2009, I obtained my
Master’s Degree in Humane Education. I love my job, I love the people I work with
and my passion for animals is as strong as it was the first day I started my job!”
Darlene Feldman works in the Education Department as a
Humane Education Specialist. After 17 years of teaching at
the elementary school level Darlene started volunteering at the
Humane Society. She volunteered in the Education Department
and as a dog PAL for more than 5 years. About 6 months after
she started volunteering at the shelter Darlene and her
husband Jay adopted Chloe, a black cocker spaniel. In February
2011 Darlene became a part time employee in the Education
Department and then about 1½ years later became a full time
employee. She meets with prospective Education Volunteers,
trains them, schedules tours and presentations at the shelter
and at schools, and is the coordinator of both the Teen Club
and the Mitzvah Mutts Program. She also assists with camp and other programs.
The best part of working at the Humane Society is the people I work with, meeting and
working with our volunteers, and getting to teach children. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I
love the time I get to spend playing with the animals, too!
What you might not know about me is that I love to read, shop, and spend time
with family and friends.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU...
Katie Tutt is the Education Programs Coordinator. Her relationship with the
Humane Society began in 2006 when she adopted her first dog, Duke, from
the shelter.
She has been working for the Humane Society of Broward County since August
2012.
When asked what the best part of
working at HSBC is, “I have always been passionate about helping
animals and teaching children, my job combines two of the things I love most. I also work with the
most amazing people.”
Carrie Neff is the Humane
Education Coordinator. She
oversees the kids’ camps, Helping
Hounds, Boys and Girls Clubs
partnership, the Seniors for Animals
Club, and helps with other
department programs as needed.
She is also one of the Pawsport
presenters. Carrie came to the
Humane Society 8 years ago with 10
years of experience working with
other shelters in a variety of
capacities. Carrie says “I feel
fortunate and proud to be a part
of this great team. Though I’ve
been here eight years, I still get
impressed by how much this
organization is doing to help the
animals. Nobody is doing more
than HSBC!”
