Tis the time of year when families gather. These are festive get-togethers of food,friends and fun. Of course, notevery family is as lucky as theHarneys. Our man at thestove, John Harney, was chosen as Bon Appetit’s FoodArtisan of the Year. So ourculinary expectations for theupcoming Holidays are greatlyelevated!

This year’s family gatheringwill be special. John’s daughterElyse is moving back toConnecticut with her husbandand children. So we will have

to find extra room at the Holiday dining tables. Sad to say that the tea company willnot benefit from her efforts. She will be working at the other family business: ElyseHarney Real Estate.

The Holiday season is always a great time to visit our Tasting Room in Millerton,New York. Brigitte Harney and her staff will make the new shop look just lovely.They will have it stocked with many tempting gifts. And Alex Harney will be making light fare that will make your visit extra special.

Jin ShanAfter leaving the hot, noisy city of Hangzhou, itwas a relief to climb up the sinuous road to JinShan Temple. The monks knew what they weredoing when they chose that spot! While there, wefound a small tea factory that makes tea for thetemple. This green tea is nicely rolled and tingedwith white tips. It makes a delightful, slightly veg-etal cup. This tea is rarely found in the States. Infact, we bought the whole production of thissmall factory. This tea is packed at the source in asealed bag.

Ti Quan Yin, Spring FloralOne of China’s most famous teas, this Oolongcomes from Anxi in the Fujian province. It’s moreoxidized (browner) than the Shuixian. It can alsobe made by the gongfu method that uses tiny potsand several infusions.


OOLONG TEAS

Fenghuang ShuixianThis is one of China's most famous oolongs. Theleaves are long and brown which makes for a reddish-brown tea with great peach flavor andhints of spiciness. This special tea is the best of Mr. Zhong’s production.

We were able to get back to the flavor we prize.This is the most oxidized of Taiwanese oolongs,made in the summer. Please try this new improvedtea.


Li ShanThis is another tea from Taiwan from Mr. Tsu. It ishis best tea of the year. Li Shan is a new area forhigh mountain oolongs, yet it produces the mostprized tea in Taiwan. This lightly oxidized tea istwisted into tight balls. It looks light in the cupbut boasts a lovely, lasting nectar. Li Shan is trulyTaiwan’s pride.


Dong DingLocated in the highlands in Central Taiwan is thecity of LuKu, which is famous for Dong Ding. Welike the new style of this tea. It is clear withalmost a floral scent and lots of body. Nothing isadded to get this flavor.


Da Hong PaoThis wonderful tea is produced from plants grownfrom the famous 3 tea plants. Its large leaves areabout 40% oxidized and have a warm, toasty flavor.This great oolong can be brewed several times.


The Tea Gardens of Dong Ding

Top Ti Quan YinWe were able to locate some more of this greattea. The nose and body are exquisite, like a greatWhite Burgundy. It has lots of power. We wereable to get an allocation of 40 tins.

New Wenshan BaozhongWenshan Baozhong is a new oolong for us. A highlight of our last trip to Taiwan was going toPingling, just over the mountain from the metropolis of Taipei. Those few miles make a greatdifference. The village of Pingling is tiny andfocused on tea. In fact there are tea pots hanginglike streetlamps above the street. It was above thevillage that we drove higher and higher, finallyentering the clouds to view (through the mist) thetea garden. The greenish oolong has long, fullleaves that make an oolong with much flavor(almost floral) and a delightful finish. This tea canbe brewed a couple of times.


Ginger’s OolongA little spice is nice. When we add Ginger to ourpeachy-tasting Formosa Oolong, we get a great spinon our popular Peaches & Ginger.


Formosa OolongThis is the style of brown oolong that generationsof Americans loved. It was the toasty flavor thatthey enjoyed. Don’t worry about the stems, that ishow the Taiwanese do this tea.

GenmaichaA different sort of Japanese tea that many find intriguing. While the green leaves are being dried, rice kernels are added. The kernels get crispy and some burst open. The tea has a unique appearance and a pleasant roasted flavor.


BanchaBancha is a great value for Japanese teas. It has anice vegetal flavor and no smokiness.
