Zermatt – St. Moritz

The entire journey takes around 8 hours and crosses 291 bridges, passes through 91 tunnels and climbs over the 2033 m high Oberalp pass – this is truly one of the most famous train journeys in the world.

ITINERARY

Day 1 Individual transfer by train to Zermatt. Short walk to the hotel and check in. Zermatt lies at the foot of the Matterhorn. BERNINA EXPRESS

The Bernina Express, which was classed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008, runs through the ancient landscape of Switzerland’s beautiful Grisons, making short work of the 55 tunnels, 196 bridges, viaducts and steep inclines along the way.

ITINERARY

Day 1 Individual travel to St. Moritz, which is often called an Alpine metropolis, where numerous luxury hotels, spas and upscale shops can be found. Overnight in St. Moritz.

Day 2 Board the narrow-gauge Bernina Express at St. Moritz station and enjoy one of the most impressive scenic rail journeys Switzerland has to offer. GRAND TOUR OF SWITZERLAND

ITINERARY

Day 1 Individual travel to Zurich. Zurich is the “metropolis of experiences” and offers a unique mixture of attractions. Overnight in Zurich.

Day 2 Zurich – St. Gallen (ca. 150 km): After breakfast drive to St.Gallen with a stopover at the Rhine Falls, Europe’s largest waterfall. Overnight in St.Gallen.

Day 3 St. Gallen – Davos (ca. 160 km): On your way to Davos you will pass the village of Appenzell. The Appenzell region is known for rural customs and traditions. Continue your drive and have a stopover at Heidi’s Village in Maienfeld. Overnight in Davos.

Day 4 Davos – Lugano (ca. 290 km): On your way to Lugano in the south of Switzerland you have several opportunities to experience the Grand Tour attractions. Relax for example on a train ride on the most beautiful Alpine train, the Bernina Express. Overnight in Lugano.

Day 5 Lugano – Zermatt (ca. 215 km): Leaving Lugano for Zermatt, one visit that’s a must is Monte Brè. On your way lies Ascona. The city is famous for its mild climate, its Old Town and a lake promenade which is dotted with street cafés. Continue your journey and arrive in the region Valais. Here lies the Aletsch Glacier – the biggest glacier in the Alps. Continue moving down to Täsch, last stop for your car before you continue by train on to Zermatt. Overnight in Zermatt.

Day 6 Zermatt – Montreux (ca. 150 km): A morning trip up the exhilarat-ing open-air Gornergrat railway is not to be missed, for unrivalled views over the 4000 m peaks surrounding Zermatt. After making your way back down to Täsch to collect your car, your route begins with a stunning drive up through the Valais, heading through Sierre, Sion, Martigny and Aigle. After this you drive along the shores of Lake Geneva to Montreux. Visit the Chillon Castle. Overnight in Montreux.

Day 7 Montreux – Gstaad (ca. 330 km): Drive through the orchards and terraced vineyards of the Lavaux and further to Lausanne, the second-larg-est city on Lake Geneva. Make sure you visit the Olympic Museum. Con-tinue your drive to Freiburg, the largest medieval town in Üechtland. Further on your way you will pass the Greyerzer region, with its rolling green landscape. Overnight in Gstaad.

Day 8 Gstaad – Lucerne (ca. 315 km): Before you continue to Lucerne, enjoy the beautiful scenery of the chalet village Gstaad. Continue your drive to Interlaken. From Interlaken you can experience the majestic Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau summits. If you have some time left before you head to Lucerne, Berne is the place to spend it. The old town of Berne is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Overnight in Lucerne.

Day 9 Departure Lucerne – Zurich (ca. 140 km): You will spend your last day in one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland. One of the highlights of Lucerne is the Chapel Bridge. Drive back to Zurich for rental car drop-off at the airport and return journey.

Interlaken lies in the Bernese Oberland between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. The vacation destination is presided over by the three mighty mountains, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Day 3 Interlaken – Montreux (Jungfraujoch and GoldenPass Line In­terlaken – Montreux): Excursion to the Jungfraujoch, which is the highest railway station in Europe at 3454 m with some breath-taking views of the Aletsch Glacier with 22 km the longest in the Alps and UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the early evening your journey on the GoldenPass Line continues. Along the shores of Lake Thun you reach the Simmen valley with Zweisimmen and Gstaad. Your journey takes you through the wild and romantic Pays d’Enhaut with the scenic villages of Château d’Oex and Montbovon, and through a tunnel, before a panoramic view of Lake Geneva and Montreux opens in front of you. Overnight in Montreux.

Day 4 Montreux – Zermatt: Journey from Montreux to Zermatt. The rest of the day you can marvel at the famous and beautiful Matterhorn and have the option of doing a non-guided excursion to the Gornergrat. Overnight in Zermatt.

Day 5 Zermatt – St. Moritz: In the morning you take the world-famous Glacier Express for a ride in the panorama carriage to St. Moritz. The train takes you on over the Oberalp pass (2033 m) and through the impressive Rhine gorge. Overnight in St. Moritz.

Day 6 St. Moritz – Lugano (Bernina Express): Board the Bernina Express at St. Moritz station and enjoy one of the most impressive scenic rail jour-neys Switzerland has to offer. Climbing over the spectacular Bernina pass to more than 2253 m, you pass snow-covered mountain peaks and glaciers then descend towards Poschiavo and Brusio. After travelling over spiral

viaducts and through winding tunnels, you reach Tirano in Italy, which is the end of the Bernina line. Change to the Bernina Express Bus which will take you onwards to Lugano. Overnight in Lugano.

Day 7 Lugano – Lucerne (Wilhelm Tell Express): With the Wilhelm Tell Express you travel from the Mediterranean south to the traditional heart of Switzerland. A visit to Bellinzona with its castles is worth a stop and a recommended Grand Tour attraction. In Flüelen board the historic Wil-helm Tell paddle steamer for the cruise across Lake Lucerne. Overnight in Lucerne.

Day 8 Departure Lucerne: Depending on your departure time, oppor-tunity to visit Mount Pilatus or do the Voralpen-Express excursion. Drive back to Zurich for rental car drop-off at the airport and return journey.
