4Q respectively.

II. How will the electric flux through the sphere S1 change , if a medium
of dielectric constant r is introduced in the space inside S1 in place of

5. Derive an expression for the electric field intensity at a point on the
equatorial line of an electric dipole of dipole moment → . Depict the
orientation of the dipole in (a) stable (b) unstable equilibrium in a uniform
electric field
6. State Gauss’s law. Use it to deduce the expression for the electric field due
to a uniformly charged thin spherical shell at points

plates of a parallel plate capacitor but has the thickness d/2 , where d is the
separation between the plates. Find out the expression for its capacitance
when the slab is inserted between the plates of the capacitor.
14. Two point charges 2C and -2C are placed at points A and B 6 cm apart.
i. Draw the equipotential surfaces of the system.
ii. Why do the equipotential surfaces get closer to each other near the
point charges?
15. Obtain the expression for the energy stored per unit volume in a charged
parallel capacitor.
16. Two point charges q1 and q2 are located at r1 and r2 respectively in an
external electric field E. Obtain the expression for the total work done in
assembling this configuration.
17. Two identical capacitors of 12pF each connected in series across a battery
of 50 V. How much electrostatic energy is stored in the combination? If these
were connected in parallel across the same battery, how much energy will be
stored in the combination now? Also find the charge drawn from the battery in
each case.
18. Find the ratio of the potential differences that must be applied across the
parallel and series combination of two capacitors C1 and C2 with their
capacitance in the ratio 1:2 so that the energy stored in these two cases
becomes the same.

19. Explain the term drift velocity of electrons in a conductor. Hence obtain the
expression for the current through a conductor in terms of drift velocity.
20. State the two Kirchhoff’s rules used in electric networks. How are these
rules justified?

(i) Why are the connections between the resistors in a metre bridge
made of thick copper strips?
(ii) Why is it generally preferred to obtain the balance point in the
middle of the metre bridge wire?
(iii) Which material is used for the metre bridge wire and why?
22. State the underlying principle of a potentiometer. Why is it necessary to (a)
use a long wire, (b) have uniform area of cross-section of the wire and (c) use a
driving cell whose emf is taken to be greater than emfs of the primary cells?
23. Define the term resistivity of a conductor. Give its SI unit. Show that the
resistance R of a conductor is given by mL/ne2A, where the symbols have their
usual meaning.
(i) Define the term conductivity of metallic wire. Write its SI unit
(ii) Using the concept of free electrons in a conductor, derive the
expression for the conductivity of a wire in terms of number density
and relaxation between current density and the applied electric field

24. Using Kirchhoff’s rules obtain the condition in terms of the resistances of 4
arms of Wheatstone bridge.
25. In the metre bridge experimental set-up the null point D is obtained at a
distance of 40cm from end A of the metre bridge wire. If a resistance of 10 is
connected in series with R1 null point is obtained at AD = 60 cm. Calculate the
values of R1 and R2.
