It's not surprising that pets are often a popu-lar holiday gift. The darling image of the bow-bedecked puppy or the kitten-stuffed stocking is a holiday classic, but gift givers should make sure that an animal's charm doesn't overshadow other important factors to consider when making a pet purchase, including where the pets came from and who the recipient is.

Each year more than 4 million homeless pets are killed as a result of overpopulation, but families who adopt from animal shelters or rescue groups can help preserve these lives and support the growing trend of socially responsible holiday shopping. Best Friends Animal Society encourag-es families this holiday season to give the precious gift of life by adopting homeless pets rather than buying from breeders, pet stores or online retail-ers.

Also, resist the urge to surprise a friend or family member with a living gift. Choosing the right pet is an extremely personal decision, one that should be made carefully by the adults who will be caring for the animal for its 15- to 20-year lifetime. Instead, offer an adoption gift certifi cate paired with a basket of pet care items or stuffed animal for the holiday itself, and then let the per-son or family choose the actual pet that feels right to them.

Once you've decided to adopt, keep in mind that welcoming a pet into your life is a big decision and requires important preparation. Best Friends of-fers tips and advice to help make a smooth transi-tion at home.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIESBefore bringing home a new pet, discuss what

Adopt

Meroles and responsibilities each family member will take on. Who will be in charge of feeding, walks, changing the litter box and taking your pet for regular visits to the vet? Giving each family mem-ber a specifi c task will help everyone feel involved, especially young children.

PREP THE HOUSEAdding a pet to the house means adding new

items to your shopping lists. For dogs, the basics are a collar and leash, chew toys, a kennel and dog bed. Cats need a litter box and litter, a scratching post and a carrying crate for transportation. Also don't forget food and toys.

HAVE YOUR PET SPAYED/NEUTEREDSpaying or neutering is one of the greatest gifts

you can provide your pet and community. It not only helps control the overabundance of pets, but can also help prevent medical and behavioral problems from developing. Most shelters include this with the adoption package or can recommend a local veterinarian in your area, so check with the staff at the shelter before you leave.

COMMUNITY RULES AND RESOURCESDo a little research on what identifi cation (tags,

microchips, etc.) you might need for your pet. Scout out the local dog parks and runs for future outdoor fun, and make sure you know where emer-gency vet clinics or animal hospitals are located.

SET LIMITSHaving pre-determined rules will create con-

sistency in training and help make the home a pleasant environment for you and your pet. Will your pet be allowed to snuggle with you in bed or curl up with you on your furniture? Will treats be limited to one a day? It's important to discuss these questions as a family before your new family member arrives.

An estimated 17 million people will be adding pets to their families this year, so this season, help bring some holiday cheer to a homeless pet by adopting your newest companion.

FRAME IT YOUR WAYIf you don't have time to put a collage together for a calendar or photo book, a great last minute gift option is a basic photo enlargement. You can purchase a lovely frame to turn a simple picture into an elegant gift or have a larger version mounted or laminated. Places like Staples can do it for you instantly in store providing a convenient option when you're pressed for time during the holidays.Finding ways like these to personalize gifts will show the recipients just how much you care, and how much thought you put into making the perfect present. That extra touch will be just what's needed to make your loved ones feel special.

… for an extra special touch

CREATE SOMETHING ARTISTICYou can really wow your loved ones this holiday season with a personalized gift that has an artistic touch - even if your talents are limited to stick fi gures. Photographs are one form of art, and you can turn a favorite photograph - whether it's of a person, landscape or really intricate design - into a large mural with Staples EasyCanvas prints, available at Staples retail locations. Your photos will be printed on gallery-wrapped, high-quality textured photo paper, available in various sizes, allowing you to size the gift perfectly for the recipient's home. One way to really make the photo mural stand out is to frame it to perfectly match the decor of the room where it will be hung.

(BPT) - Choosing the perfect gift for your loved ones can be a di cult task. However, you don't have to stress about going from store to store wondering if you're picking out the right size or color or whether it fi ts your budget.

If you fi nd yourself struggling to fi nd the perfect gift this holiday season, consider taking a di erent approach - personalize gifts you know your friends, family and coworkers will love unwrapping. Personalized gifts show that you care enough to invest your time and energy to create the perfect present. In particular, photos from an event or family trip will often hold special meaning and can serve as the inspiration to a myriad of gift giving options.- Here are a few ideas:

BRING MEMORIES BACKOpening a gift featuring memories of the great moments over the past year will have your loved ones beaming with happiness. Help the recipient keep track of important dates and meetings while also reliving favorite events of the past with a photo calendar. Take those favorite photos to Staples Copy and Print Center or order online, choose from hundreds of calendar designs, and pick up the fi nished calendar in as few as four hours. Need another gift for your loved ones? Use those same favorite pictures to create personalized photo books which make great stocking stu ers.

(BPT) - If you think you're busy this time of year, imagine how busy the fi rst lady of holiday cheer can be. Not only does she help the big guy get ready for Christmas, but she makes sure everyone in the North Pole has a memorable holi-day season. From hosting parties to keeping the elves happy and healthy, this joyful time of year is also her busiest.

"While the holiday season is always a hectic time at the North Pole, just like it is for you and your family, we still try to spend time together even after a long day in Santa's workshop" says Mrs. Claus. "We read Santa's letters, play rein-deer games and bake tasty holiday goodies together."

For a holiday season fi lled with joy and laugh-ter, Mrs. Claus shared her top fi ve ways to make lasting memories with your little ones.

LETTERS TO SANTASanta loves receiving letters from children.

Encouraging your kids to write to Santa provides a great opportunity to teach them how to spell, compose written text and allows them to prac-tice handwriting. For younger kids who haven't started reading or writing, encourage them to draw pictures, instead.

Leave something specialMaking a snack for Santa with your little

helpers offers an extra opportunity to spend time together creating memories that will last a lifetime. Think beyond the cookie tray and per-sonalize your treats just for him. One of Santa's

Mrs. Clausshares tips forfun holidayactivities

favorites is Kellogg's Rice Krispies Tree Trim-mer Treats.

HOLIDAY CHEERMake decorating the house a fun event for the

whole family. Engage your kids in holiday crafts to display on the mantle and make sure everyone has ornaments to hang on the tree.

STORY NIGHTSSanta and I often gather all of the elves togeth-

er to reminisce about family memories, or watch our favorite holiday movies. Stir up some hot cocoa and treats, share special moments from holidays past, or let your little ones pick their

favorite holiday movie.

RUDOLPH ROADMAPMake sure Santa and his reindeer can fi nd your

house. Sprinkle a mixture of oats and glitter on your front yard to help guide them right to your home — even if it gets a little foggy.

INGREDIENTS❏ 12 (6-inch lengths) red or black string licorice❏ 12 miniature marshmallows❏ 3 tablespoons butter or margarine❏ 1 package (10 ounces, about 40) regular marshmallows or 4 cups miniature marshmallows❏ 6 cups Kellogg's Rice Krispies cereal

DIRECTIONSFold each licorice piece in half and push ends through centers of 12 miniature marshmal-lows. Set aside. In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add 10 ounces marsh-mallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat. Add cereal. Stir until well coated. Using 1/2-cup measuring cup coated with cooking spray, divide warm cereal mixture into 12 portions. Using buttered hands shape each portion into ornament shape around licorice ends. Cool. Decorate with frosting and candies. Best if served the same day.

Get Crafty!TAG, YOU'RE ITFocus on the gift tag. Use unusual items like recipe cards, luggage tags or coasters to identify gift recipients.

STAMP IT OUTView plain wrapping paper as a canvas by covering it with a unique pattern of colorful rubber stamp prints.

MONOGRAM MADNESSPersonalize presents by including the recipients' initials on the wrapping. Write their initials all over the paper or a x cut out letters or cookie cutters in their initials as tags.

… with these holiday gift wrap ideas

(BPT) - Make wrapping gifts more fun this holiday season. Get your supplies ready, invite some friends and turn up the holiday music. Before you get started, here are some creative gift wrapping tips from popular crafting blogger, Cindy Hopper, founder of SkipToMyLou.org."I love wrapping holiday gifts — from little treasures like Dunkin' Donuts(R) seasonal packaged co ee to bigger presents like kids' toys and electronics — in unexpected and creative ways," says Hopper. "You don't need a lot of money, just some motivation and imagination, to create packaging that will make any gift recipient smile."

A TOUCH OF FUNMake packaging playful by adding a small toy like a jump rope as ribbon or jingle bells to the top of the gift.

TIE TWO TOGETHERHave the gift and its wrapping complement one another. Place a bag of new Dunkin' Donuts Gingerbread Cookie packaged co ee in a cookie jar. Present the Pumpkin Spice variety in a basket of mini-pumpkins, or serve Mocha Mint with a favorite chocolate bar.

KEEP A CUSHIONReplace packing peanuts with colorful tissue paper, blown up balloons or even wrapped candies, to create an eye-catching display when recipients open their package.

WRAP IT UPInstead of purchasing wrapping paper, see what's available at home to use. Newspaper comics, wallpaper scraps or even pages from an old atlas or map make memorable gift wrap.

LOOK TO NATUREAdd a fresh fl ower, pretty shell or sprig of mistletoe for an elegant, outdoor element to any holiday gift.

CONTAIN YOURSELFInstead of the standard cardboard box, house gifts in decorative tins, hat boxes or fruit crates for a clever presentation.

TWO IN ONEIf gifting seasonal food or beverages, pair the gift with serving items. For example, o er Dunkin' Donuts packaged co ee in a mug, or wrap the package with a ribbon attached to a co ee scoop.

(BPT) - The personal aspects of a gift basket are also endearing. You can customize a gift basket to the oc-casion (holiday, birthday, retirement, etc.) and tastes of the recipient, and taking the time to do so shows your thoughtfulness and caring. Building a great gift basket can be fun and easy. The gift experts at Cracker Barrel Old Country Store offer some advice for putting together a gift basket that will charm any recipient:

THE FIRST STEPSBegin by deciding what to put in the

gift basket — packaged food, gourmet

coffees, collegiate items, apparel, can-dles, personal care items like soaps or lotions, cooking utensils, books, jewelry, home decor items, gardening tools, ornaments, picture frames, etc. Practically any hobby or area of inter-est can be an inspiration for a gift basket. Base your choice on the recipi-ent's personality and interests.

Next, choose a container. Baskets, of course, are the classic container, but don't overlook other options, especially if they fi t the overall theme you've chosen. For example, load a toy football helmet with items inspired by his favorite football team. A large

Rules of thumb for arranging items:● Place tallest items in the back. If you're using a round container, choose a side to serve as a visual "back."

● Moving forward, stair step the rest of your items from tall to short. It's OK if the rows are not perfectly straight or even. In fact, a little variance in the arrangement will make the basket look even more appealing.

● Be sure to place packaged items with the most interesting side facing forward so it's immediately visible. For example, if you've included a bag of the recipient's favorite co ee, make sure the brand name is showing so he or she will be able to tell at a glance what's in the basket.

● Be careful not to completely hide any items. It's fi ne to have things peeping through here or there, but avoid burying anything on the bottom. Buried items could potentially get lost and tossed out with the shredding.

● If you need to hold items in place, secure them using some glue lines or glue dots (also available in craft stores.) Fitting everything snugly is the key.

stockpot can be ideal for holding cook-ing utensils for a foodie or budding chef. A planter makes a useful and decorative container for gardening tools.

ARRANGING ITEMSOnce you've chosen the perfect

container, think about how you'll ar-range the items that go in it. First, add some decorative shredding (available in craft stores, or make your own with colored paper and a paper shredder) to help stabilize items in the container and make it look even more attractive.

THE FINISHING TOUCHESOnce your basket is artfully fi lled,

place the entire container in a large cellophane bag. Gather the bag above the contents of the basket, then tie a bow at the narrowest part of the

gathered bag. For smaller containers, pull the corners of the bag under the container and tape them. Trim any excess bag at the top.

You can either hand-deliver your gift basket — which gives you the instant gratifi cation of seeing the surprise and happiness on your loved one's face - or ship it if that's more convenient and practical. When ship-ping, be sure to package your basket securely. If you purchase a gift basket at Cracker Barrel, they will pack it for you at no extra cost and you just pay the actual shipping fee.

If creating a gift basket yourself is not your cup of tea — or if you prefer to have an expert handle the job — the gift gurus at Cracker Barrel can do it for you based on your specifi cations. Visit shop.crackerbarrel.com to learn more.

Secrets of building a great gift basket

Giving a great gift basket is like bestowing a bu et of

gifts on your loved one, and when the well-put-together gift basket is opened, well,

that's a magical moment.

Beneath the pretty decorations lie enchanting

mysteries that emerge one-by-one to the delight

of the recipient.
