a pre-Christmas stop by the North Pole residents during Jingle Bell Holiday festivities in Grinnell last year.. More than 150

youngsters, many standing outside in line, came to see Santa and Mrs. Claus during the visit to Grinnell. Dominic said he

wants a tractor for Christmas and that his sister wants a doll for her fi rst Christmas.

Grinnell’s annual downtown holiday event, Jingle Bell Holiday, is getting a new twist—this year’s event is all about the kids! “Bring your kids downtown to meet myself and all of Grin-nell’s local retailers,” said Bill Hammen of Bill’s Jewelry. “We want to get to know your family and let you know how much we appreciate your business all year round.” Jingle Bell Holi-day is Friday, Nov. 30, from 5 to 8 p.m. in downtown Grinnell. Each participating business is hosting a free kids’ activity, craft, treats or music in their store, and the merchants look for-ward to a night of fam-ily fun.The schedule for the evening includes: • 5-8 p.m. - Retail Open Houses. • 5-8 p.m. - Car-riage Rides, corner

TOUR OF HOMES DETAILSRon and Kathy Van Berkum, 208 N. Campbell St., North English

The Ron and Kathy Van Berkum home at 208 N. Camp-bell St. was built in 1978 by Kenny Campbell for Wayne and Margaret Fancher. Ron and Kathy purchased this ranch style house with three bedrooms, one full bath and two half baths in 1991.

Kathy loves to decorate for Christmas, especially with trees. The main tree in their living room contains many spe-cial ornaments for Ron and Kathy and their children. The patriotic tree honoring their son Matt and his service in Af-ghanistan is also in the living room. The kitchen has a win-ter-themed tree and school-themed tree, and Ron’s sports room has baseball and football-themed trees. The master bedroom has a tree with offi cial White House ornaments, and one bedroom has a tree with all felt ornaments made by Kathy’s Aunt Amy Huber who passed in 1998. Many of the trees are kept up all year with decorations changing for the holidays (Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Fourth of July, and Halloween).

Kathy’s Dickens’ Village pieces are a family favorite and are kept on display all year round, a special thing as Ron be-gan Kathy’s collection in their previous house. Ron’s favor-ite ornament is a N-O-E-L train he gave to his mother when he was 12 years old. Richard and Susan Elwood509 W. Oak St., North English

The Richard and Susan Elwood home at 509 W. Oak St. is fi rst mentioned as a residence in the 1889 will of C. W. Lut-ton, the community’s fi rst school teacher. It is remembered that this home then became the country estate of J. D. But-ler and his wife Eliza. He was the only attorney in North English in the late 1800s, and Eliza was active in community groups.

After Eliza’s death in 1934, the home was owned by For-rest R. and Amy Plank, and it was then sold to the Ross Had-

ley American Legion group for its Legion Hall. There are community memories of “box socials” and dances at the Legion hall where young ladies would hope to meet young gentlemen.

Al and Ione Jonhson, the owners of Johnson’s Locker on Main, purchased the home in 1941 and then lived there for many years. In 1965, Richard and Susan Elwood bought the home after it had been vacant for six years. The Elwood family has added a garage, family room, sun room, and deck over the years, and they have spent 48 wonderful Christmas-es in their home. They are now welcoming you to their 49th holiday season.

Ken and Barbara Brown173 S. Main St., North English

In the early 1900s a one story building was constructed on Main Street after a destructive fi re, and later a second story was added. One of the fi rst businesses in this building was the Mahannah Harness Shop, where they also sold buggies and wag-ons. A sign is still visible, painted on the south side of the building that advertises the popular Velie Buggy.

In later years, the build-ing became Kirkpatrick Feeds and several other things. There was even a beauty shop upstairs, along with an apartment, and it eventually became the Jera-Lee Shoe Store and Valley Clothiers.

In recent years, Ken and

Barbara Brown moved to North Eng-lish, and they have renovated the building with their home on the sec-ond fl oor, and they have future plans for the downstairs.

This building is NOT handi-capped accessible. It has 12-foot ceilings and 21 stairs to climb.

The Browns plan to have a tradi-tional Christmas tree on display, and because they have some relatives who are Jewish, they will have a Me-norah also. Barbara collects antique dolls, and some will be on display throughout the home.

Curtis and Kim Wilkerson2047 336th St., North English

The Curtis and Kim Wilkerson home at 2047 336th St. was built in 2007 by the English Valleys General Construction class under the instruc-tion of Chip Fritz. The house sits on 18 acres about 1/4 mile west of North English.

Curtis and Kim designed the house themselves with the idea of bringing the outdoors in. The home features an open fl oor plan with a

14 foot vaulted pine plank ceiling and plenty of windows to enjoy the wildlife. The kitchen cupboards are hickory and the railing to the lower level was handcrafted by the Amish out of pine logs. The dining room table and chairs are also handcrafted by the Amish out of pine logs.

Other features of the home include an old fashioned screen door to the walk-in pantry and a master bath with a Florida Gulf Coast theme. The couple enjoys collecting an-tiques, which work well with the cabin feel of the home.

Christmas decorations include items which have been given to Kim by her customers and co-workers over the years. Kim has a “weakness” for unique Christmas decora-tions, especially ones on sale, so she adds new ones every year. There’s a decoration for every nook and cranny. She also likes to use greenery and lots of strings of Christmas lights in various areas of the home.

See the Nov. 29 issue of the Journal Tribune for seasonal church services, etc.
