Travelling to the cottage

Tanygrisiau is situated approximately one mile southwest of Blaenau Ffestiniog on the A496. If you are travelling along the A5 in the direction of Corwen, then instead of continuing to Betyws-y-Coed and along the A470 through Dolwyddelan, you could consider trying an alternative route that takes you through miles of open moorland.

Reproduced from Ordnance Survey map data by permission of Ordnance Survey, © Crown copyright An alternative route from Corwen (especially in the daytime) is to take the A494 or B4401 to Bala and from Bala take the A4212. Travel along this road for approximately 0.6 miles and turn left and travel along the west side of Llyn Celyn. At the end of this road cross over the A4212 and continue along the B4391 towards Blaenau Ffestiniog. It is possible to branch off as you come into Ffestiniog and also half a mile before Blaenau Ffestiniog so as to avoid populated areas. When you get to the cottage, you get a real sense of remoteness. We will happily provide you with a more detailed route on request.

The easiest approach to the cottage at the final stage is to turn off the A496 and take the road leading to the hydro-electric power station. You will come to a cafe after which there is a sharp right turn. Cross over the railway track and continue for 350 metres until you cross over a bridge and come to a T-junction. Turn right and ‘West End’ is approximately 50 yards after the first turning South Street. An asphalt drive leads you to the rear of the terrace as shown in the photograph below. There are two parking areas; one off-road at the end of the terrace and another on the Cwmorthin Road opposite the path leading to the front of the cottages.

When you see this view you know you have reached West End.
