What is The Hole Story?Bob McNichols started McNICHOLS CO. on May 1, 1952, with his wife Phyllis.

With holes in all the products he carried, Bob trademarked “The Hole Story.” The trademark was first advertised in the 1975 McNICHOLS Master Catalog and began a legacy of hole references to products (Hole Products) and personnel (The Hole Team).

After the unexpected loss of Bob McNichols in 1981, his son Gene took over the leadership role at McNICHOLS. Gene carried on his father’s legacy to transition the company and ready it for the future.

In 1990, Gene made McNICHOLS’ mission “Service, Quality and Performance.” These three words embody the spirit of the organization: Service to customers; unfailing Quality that is challenged and measured through ISO 9001:2008 certification; and Performance that surpasses expectations for customers and provides a secure, fulfilling career for all Hole Team members.

As McNICHOLS celebrates its 62nd Anniversary this year, the third generation of the McNichols family – with Scott McNichols as president – is already making its mark as stewards of the legacy passed on by their father and grandfather.

Today, as an organization, McNICHOLS has grown beyond a small family business, while the essence and spirit of its founder remain ever present.

Service, Quality and Performance... that’s The Hole Story®!

Only Survivor of a Nine-Man CrewOctober 1944. World War II. Nine soldiers left for a mission, only one survived. Bob McNichols’ Inspirational Story of Survival.

FOUNDER’S HOLE STORY

What is The Hole Story?

Back in the days when Allied bombers were slowly beating Germany to death, a jubilant crew of a Flying

Fortress took to the air one early morning, bound for Berlin for the first time.

Only one member of the crew got there. Six were killed, and two were reported missing when the big bomber was shot down in flames with its mission almost completed.

The only known survivor was Lieutenant Robert L. McNichols, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, who came home after months in a Nazi prison camp to tell the poignant story of his Fortress’ last flight and his escape from death.

As reported by the news in 1945, Bob was still trying to figure out why he was alive. He does not remember much about that sunny morning of October 6, 1944, when the ship was pounced on by a huge flight of German planes.

He lost consciousness when he tore off his oxygen mask to help a wounded comrade, and the next thing he recalled was lying on the ground looking into the muzzle of a shotgun held by a German farmer.

“I was out cold,” he said, “and have no idea how I got out of the ship or down to earth. I don’t remember pulling a rip cord, landing, or anything.”

He recalled the thrill the entire crew got when they first saw a smoking Berlin in the distance 30 miles away. He remembered opening the bomb doors and concentrating on the approaching target.

As the plane’s bombardier, he was alone in the nose of the craft when the Nazi fighters struck at 27,000 feet.

“I didn’t even know we were hit,” he said, “until I heard the bail-out bell. We must have gotten it in the wings. When I heard the bell, I released the bombs and rushed back into the body of the ship. Our navigator was lying in a passageway, badly wounded. I had to take off my oxygen mask to try to help him. As I bent over I

collapsed, the air was too thin to breathe. That’s all I know. That’s the last I saw of any of the guys who were my pals.”

McNichols believes he was a swinging target for Nazi snipers as he drifted, unconscious, to earth in his parachute.

“My uniform,” he said, “was full of bullet holes when I came to. They must have peppered me on the way down, but I didn’t have a scratch.”

Due to the grace of God, Bob McNichols survived the crash that killed eight of the B-17’s nine-man crew.

Bob was confined in a Nazi prison camp for six months. On May 1, 1945, he and his fellow prisoners of war were liberated from Stalag Luft No. 1. His handwritten diary entry for that day expresses his excitement in the final hours before freedom:

“Slept in my clothes all night. The Germans left at 1 a.m., and we took control of the camp. Woke up at 5 a.m. and started breakfast. Russians are 14 to 15 miles from here… we are still wondering when we will get out of here! Around noon Russians reported… and some of

the boys saw infantry and tanks from the roof...picked up New York on the radio this evening…thinking of getting home has upset me…I’m getting mighty impatient! The Russian advance scouts reached here tonight at 10 p.m.! German radio announced Hitler’s death…had lights until midnight!”

After his release from the prison camp, Bob returned to America and was greeted by his wife, Phyllis, and his six-month-old daughter, Barbara.

During his experience, the 22-year-old lieutenant made a solemn vow, that if he came out of the war alive, he would put God first and make Him his partner.

In May of 1952, using this second chance God had given him, he started McNICHOLS CO. basing the company’s core values in his Christian faith and service.

Bar Grating serves a functional and aesthetic need. Metal Grating Makes Statement

with McNICHOLS® Bar Grating

Customer Vision:

As the student population grew at Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU), so did the need to expand the university’s library services and technology offerings, along with the need to consolidate the campus IT services.

When it came to construction and operating expense, cost efficiency was a priority, as was the need for design elements compatible with other campus buildings. Like other campus structures, the two being revamped were constructed during dissimilar decades, so the project architectural firm Cogdell & Mendrala of Savannah, Georgia, had to bridge the eras while incorporating aesthetically pleasing features appropriate to the facility’s new purpose.

Hole Solution:

Faced with the challenge, Don Cogdell, AIA, and the Cogdell & Mendrala team, turned to McNICHOLS aluminum metal Bar Grating that would solve a functional and aesthetic need.

“We wanted to make the statement that this is a current building, separate from those built in 1965 and 1982, yet blends well into the campus setting” said Cogdell, who saw bar grating as a design feature that would help bridge the gap from the past to present day.”

By adding the sunscreen, with the help of the contractor, Garbutt Construction Co. of Dublin, Georgia, Cogdell would achieve the objective. Approximately 4 by 10 feet in size, the clear anodized Bar Grating was installed above the entry doors. At one inch by 3/16ths inch thick, the material has 77 percent open area. The material, custom cut by McNICHOLS into various specified sizes, is secured on a metal frame that is attached to the roof by stainless steel rods.

Ironically, a similar Bar Grating in varying anodized finishes was the answer to transforming the industrial look of the mechanical courtyard into a more aesthetically pleasing environment seen from the President’s Dining Hall. The anodized panels for this application vary from light to dark bronze to natural and were arranged creatively with function and aesthetics in mind.

The material’s open area allows air circulation necessary for the mechanical equipment to function, while the color and placement of the panels give the arrangement of metal a sculpture-like appearance when viewed from above.

“Our concept was to create dimension and shadowing,” said Cogdell, noting that the panels were placed along a structural grid that extends across the courtyard and positioned in various angles and heights.

According to Mel Manor, AASU Construction Project Manager Plant Operations, the Bar Grating is a unique feature that blends well on campus.

Completed in May 2012, Learning Commons, which includes rooftop solar panels and a vegetated green live roof, is now a model of efficiency and design, earning LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The reuse project also received a 2013 Innovation Award for Design and Technology from the University System of Georgia.

Customer Vision:

The Ocoee River Gorge dams provide hydroelectricity to the surrounding Tennessee community. Using gas powered rail cars in the past, they wanted to find a safer and more efficient way to access their 14- by 16- foot flume for maintenance.

INDUSTRIAL

Hole Solution:

T he Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) chose McNICHOLS pre-galvanized, 14 gauge GRIP STRUT® Plank Grating in 2-inch channel heights with

24-inch wide panels to cover their 14- by 16-foot flume. The 12-foot long planks provided the safety qualities they were looking for along with ease of installation and a long life.

The TVA’s three Ocoee River Gorge dams generate more than 67,000 kilowatts of electricity for the community and is also one of the premier sport rivers in the Southeast. Once the site of the 1996 Summer Olympics whitewater competitions, the Ocoee boasts a mile-long Olympic whitewater course and a four-and-a-half-mile rafting area.

The dams make clever use of East Tennessee’s mountainous topography to maximize power production. The powerhouses of two of the dams are located five and two-and-a-half miles downstream from their respective dams. Water flows from the second dam to its powerhouse by way of a wooden flume, and from the third dam to its powerhouse by a tunnel.

GRIP STRUT® Plank Grating offers one of the most slip resistant walking-working surfaces in the industry. Planks come in widths from 4-3/4- to 24-inch with lengths from 10- to 12-foot (up to 24-foot lengths by special order). A wide range of material types are available: 14 or 12 gauge galvanized steel; 14 or 12 gauge plain steel; .080 or .100 gauge aluminum; and 16 gauge stainless steel. GRIP STRUT® is also available in a Walkway Plank Style, as well as slip-resistant Ladder Rungs and Stair Treads.

HOSPITALITY McNICHOLS CASE STUDY

Hole Solution:

The design team created a series of exterior canopies at considerable height and breadth to cast a significant shadow. They achieved shade

by covering the canopies with Perforated Metal Panels from McNICHOLS, a solution that helped reduce the effects of Texas’ summer heat and lower the power bills.

Using Perforated Metal as the majority of the visible surface material of the large structures − many up to two stories high and 23 feet in breadth − gave them a surprisingly light appearance.

More than 11,000 square feet of 1,000 individual McNICHOLS® Perforated Panels were applied using two product styles: 1/4-inch-thick with 1/4-inch round holes on 1/2-inch staggered centers and 1/8-inch thick with 3/16-inch round holes on 5/16-inch staggered centers. The panels range in size from 3-1/2- by 4-foot to 1- by 3-1/2-foot.

In addition to the solar concern, the design team had to consider the nature of the activities at The Summit. Open at night, the facility needed lighting, so the choice of Perforated Metal on the shade structures provided a decorative backdrop for night illumination.

“Anything the size of these shade elements becomes part of the language of the building.”

The canopies are supported by columns of framed steel pillars set approximately 4 feet apart. By applying McNICHOLS® Perforated Panels to the face of the columns, framed steel pillars were transformed into a simulated trellis able to achieve air circulation and light transmission.

To install the panels, figure eight keyholes were drilled at various points along the smooth edge of the panel. The panels were then hung on pin heads welded to the channel steel column, allowing the panels to be removed easily for cleaning and maintaining the lighting system positioned within the trellis.

The same design theme was repeated on the building’s south side, where columns were placed at intervals along the building face, vertically transecting the windows while supporting the canopy overhanging the roof.

In this variation on the design theme, the Perforated Panels atop the canopy were curved on a slight radius and installed at a 45-degree angle, adding another dimension to the aesthetics and a practical means of reinforcing the material.

Perforated Panels also applied to support columns

Modern Twist to Classical Design

with McNICHOLS® Perforated Metal

Customer Vision:

One California architect seized the opportunity to mix form with function and modernism with classical design in two kitchen projects.

Grecian Pattern kitchen cabinet infills in 1920s style home

Hole Solution:

W hen remodeling kitchens in two of Los Angeles’ most stylish communities, one California architect seized the opportunity

to mix form with function and modernism with classical design.

In both designs, Tim Barber Architect Ltd. in Los Angeles, incorporated McNICHOLS® Designer Perforated Metal into the kitchen sink cabinetry to produce air circulation and complement the existing architecture of the homes.

The first home − an historic residence in Beechwood Canyon near the Hollywood sign – has a Perforated Metal Infill in a Grecian Pattern to reflect the 1920s period in which the home was built. For authenticity, the white cabinets were built without a recessed toe kick. The grille pattern for the door is the traditional Greek design with four triangular openings arranged in a square and painted white.

The second home – in fashionable Brentwood – has a Perforated Infill in the Windsor Pattern. The kitchen, part of a new wing in a Spanish Colonial Revival house, was created with design elements intended to add a 1930s German industrial feel to the existing Spanish design.

Customer Vision:

Architects of The Margarido House wanted it to be the first home in Northern California to be both LEED-H Platinum certified and GreenPoint rated.

Award-winning Margarido House in Northern California

Deck also uses the GAL 100 Bar Grating GAL 150 Stair Treads

Hole Solution:

The most noticeable trait is the home’s signature architectural feature, a wing-like metal sunshade made of McNICHOLS® Aluminum Bar Grating.

McNICHOLS supplied the Bar Grating in 20' panels weighing roughly 200 pounds each. The material was bolted to the cantilevered steel beams of the house. The deck, which extends eight feet, is strong enough to walk on; wide enough to shade the sun’s intensity into the first floor living room, kitchen and entryway; durable enough to withstand fire and wind; and permeable enough to aid water run off for recycling.

The home has a planted roof that can be accessed by exterior stairs also made of McNICHOLS® Aluminum Bar Grating. Water from the roof and lot is collected and directed to a 4,000 gallon underground concrete reservoir beneath the driveway. The reservoir is covered by a strong trench grate furnished by McNICHOLS that is sturdy enough to allow for car parking.

The award-winning Margarido House exemplifies outstanding, sustainable design and has become a symbol of the movement in high design, high sustainability, collaboration and community.

What is ISO and Why Does It Matter? ISO certification is important for us at McNICHOLS as an achievement of recognition from a respected international body. But it’s more than that: it’s important to us because it’s important to you, our customer, to receive the highest standard of customer satisfaction. That is why we incorporate its principles in all that we do.

ISO 9001:2008 is a global Quality Management Standard (QMS) created entirely with the interests of the customer in mind.

To achieve ISO certification, we must follow a set of principles that “ensure a common-sense approach to the management of business activities to consistently achieve customer satisfaction.”

There are eight fundamental management principles that companies must demonstrate through intensive audits to earn ISO 9001:2008 certification:

1. Customer-focused practices2. Strong leadership3. Meaningful involvement of people4. Ensuring a process approach to quality and

customer service5. A systematic approach to management6. A factual approach to decision making7. Mutually beneficial supplier relations8. Continuous improvement

These principles form the basis for performance improvement and organizational excellence. Our ongoing commitment to these principles translates into our commitment to the customer. Achieving ISO certification means that we’ve been designated an authority on what we do — and how we do it. It’s all part of our continuous commitment to excellence — a commitment to the customer.

CHAIRMAN’S CORNER &

LOCATIONS

Chairman’s CornerService, Quality and Performance, that’s The Hole Story®.

These principles represent the very foundation our company was built on. Our journey began over six decades ago when our founder, Bob McNichols, relied on his abiding faith to open our first facility in Cleveland, Ohio. It was my privilege to work alongside my father. Now I am blessed to work with my sons and The Hole Team members, as our facilities have expanded across America. Since the beginning, our purpose has not changed. We have one goal… to be your trusted source for Hole Products! Please allow us to be of service!
