FORBES FOUNDATIONA STUDY ON FRONTLINE WORKERS

The Forbes Marshall Foundation recently supported a study on Frontline Workers. Frontline workers are Grassroots Agents who catalyse positive behavioural change. Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action (SNEHA) a Mumbai-based secular non-profit organization that focuses on the health of women and children in Mumbai’s most vulnerable slums, deploys several frontline worker models. SNEHA targets four important and neonatal health, child health and nutrition, sexual and reproductive health and prevention of violence against women and children.

Their approach is two pronged: they recognize that in order to improve urban health standards, their initiatives must target both care seekers and care providers. SNEHA works in Mumbai’s most vulnerable slums.

A study was under taken with the following objectives:

• Understand the relative strengths and weaknesses of existing frontline worker models (for example: volunteers versus paid workers), in order to enable effective intervention design in future engagements

• Systematically understand SNEHA’s existing frontline worker management practice, including the performance metrics used, and the various context (based on perceptions, motivations and challenges) in which SNEHA’s frontline workers deliver the services in the community (roles and responsibilities, process of recruitment/selection and evaluation of the frontline workers)

• Benchmark SNEHA’s current frontline worker management practice, including the performance, against those of other enterprises (other non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Sevikas, helpers and supervisors of ICDS) of similar nature focusing on social change

• Understand future plan for hiring of frontline workers for other NGOs and government.

EDUCATIONSPECIAL COACHING FOR DROP OUTS

While interacting with villages we realized that there are lot of youngsters who

have dropped out of school. These young girls and boys do not have any other

avenue for technical or professional education as they have not completed

school. We shared with them that they could appear for the Secondary School

Completion examination externally through the Maharashtra Board.

Thus we started an initiative to assist these school drop outs since September.

We are glad that nine students have submitted the forms to appear for the

exam. Of these, five are attending special classes.

HEALTHEYE CHECK UP CAMP!

The Department of Social Initiatives along with the Talegaon General Hospital conducted an Eye check up camp at Savardari and the Thakarvastis on Wednesday 16th December. There was a good response by elders, women and children.

Over 52 beneficiaries attended the Thakarvasti camp and 117 attended the Savardari Village camp. Those who required spectacles after check up were given the same at a subsidised rate of Rs. 20/-.

We propose to have counselling and follow up done for those who need surgery.

The success of the camp is attributed largely to the unrelenting efforts of our Community Health Workers who interacted with the villager, one on one, a week prior to the camp.

VOLUNTEERING‘I TEACH’ SCHOOL - SANTOSH SAWANT

Volunteering at the Babu Jagjivandas School, Yerwada

Forbes Marshall is supporting Babu Jagjivandas School at Yerwada near Gunjan Theatre. This is an

English medium school from 8th to 10th run by ‘I Teach’ Foundation. Currently their first batch is in 9th Standard.

We are focussing mainly on the following aspects for volunteering-

• A Forbes Marshall seminar series focusing on what India needs from us- we could have this as a monthly event with around 5 senior members to speak on Quality, Ethics and Values, Financial planning, and self growth amongst others.

• Mentoring children from 9th standard

• Supporting ‘I Teach’ teachers- this can be taken up by the spouses and some volunteers who can spend at least 1 Saturday every month

• Plant visit to Chakan

We held an orientation program on Saturday 17th October for those who volunteered to spend

time at the Babau Jagjivandas School for understanding the needs and mapping it to our availability. The Principal, Soumya Jain gave a brief on the school, expectations from the volunteers, this was followed by a school visit.

Volunteering activities kick started with an interactive session with the students in general about aspirations and how to plan for the same. It was a great experience to interact with the children and understand their backgrounds and their aspirations.
