THE FREEDOM AREA EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
The Freedom Area Educational Foundation was created to benefit the students of the Freedom Area School District, comprised of the communities of Conway, Freedom, and New Sewickley Township.
The purpose of the non-profit (501 c 3) foundation is to enhance and enrich the quality of the educational experience and extracurricular activities within the district beyond what are typically expected of taxpayer funding.
The Freedom Area Educational Foundation is designed to fund three primary initiatives:
*Higher Education Scholarships for Students
*Grants for Innovative Teaching Efforts
*Improvements to Athletics & Other Facilities
The profits from this event have been designated primarily to fund scholarships for Freedom Area students pursuing degrees in higher education.
The Freedom Area Educational Foundation generally or the Hall of Fame committee specifically always are seeking additional volunteers to serve in any capacity from board membership to Hall of Fame selection committee. Any person who is interested in becoming involved may contact us at www.freedomareaeducationalfoundation.org or at Post Office Box 003, Freedom, PA. 15042.
Any individual who wishes to recommend a candidate for future Hall of Fame membership is encouraged to contact the foundation. Requirements for membership in the Hall of Fame include those persons who are graduates of Freedom Area, current or past employees of the district, or residents of the community. They must have graduated from high school at least twelve years prior to the date of installation.

2013 TEACHER MINI- GRANT RECIPIENTS
JOY CROUCH, Big Knob Elementary School second grade teacher, was awarded a Teacher Mini-
Grant this past year. Each year, Ms. Crouch uses her extensive travel experiences to teach an “Around the World” unit to her class. The class “travels” to a different country every week, engaging in lessons and activities across the curriculum. Her grant allowed her to take her second grade students to the University of Pittsburgh Nationality Rooms in the historic Cathedral of Learning.
KRISTEN MILANOVICH, high school multi-media teacher, received a Mini-Grant this year to
help in the purchase of a vinyl plotter so that the students can design create vinyl stickers. The vinyl plotter will be put to use in a new course entitled Freedom Fortune 500. As the name implies, the course will be business-oriented, but also tie in all of the elements of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). The goal is to also establish a high school technology club that will build on theories learned in Multimedia, Practical Applications and Art courses. This will be the first phase of Operation Bulldog Pride, which will hopefully lead to future equipment purchases to enhance the students’ learning and skills in this area, and help foster expertise and confidence.
JENNIFER NEWMAN, elementary music teacher, purchased new percussion instruments for her
classrooms with her Mini-Grant. She wants to continue to engage the students in learning the core of all music, which is rhythm. With the use of the new rhythm instruments, students will be given the opportunity to improvise and create their own unique rhythm compositions. These experiences will develop musical understanding and appreciation whether students become performers or future audiences.
The Freedom Area Educational Foundation also awarded $500 to Project Graduation.

INTRODUCES NEW LOGO
We are pleased and proud to unveil our foundation‘s new logo, designed by David Kiefer, 2013 graduate of Freedom Area. David‘s winning design was chosen from over 20 entries submitted from the high school art and technology classes.
The Foundation was pleased with the amount of student participation in this contest and was very impressed with the quality of the designs that were submitted. The creativity and uniqueness of David’s hand-drawn design earned him the top award. We congratulate David on an outstanding job! A special recognition is given to Derek Mengel, another 2013 graduate, who was runner-up in the logo contest.

JEFFREY R. BELTZ
“It is fine to have ability, but the ability to discover ability in others is the true test.”
–Lou Holtz
As is common with many families throughout the Conway, Freedom, and New Sewickley
Township municipalities, Jeff Beltz celebrates his Freedom diploma with multiple generations of
family members. The railroad industry brought his great grandfather to Freedom nearly a century
ago, and the railroad provided employment opportunities and financial stability for three generations.
Beltz is extremely proud and humbled by his local heritage and the sacrifices that were made to give
him opportunities beyond the railroad yard.
As a 1991 graduate of Freedom Area High School, Beltz celebrated an historic senior year of
varsity athletics. In football, Beltz captained a Bulldog team that reached the WPIAL playoffs and set
a single season record with 40 receptions, while anchoring the defensive secondary. He batted over
.500 in baseball, and he averaged 25 points per game in his only season of basketball.
Beltz attended Geneva College and earned a degree in business. His collegiate sports
achievements are outstanding. On the gridiron, Beltz accumulated every game, season, and career
reception record along with playing in the secondary and returning kicks. Similar success was also
found in baseball as a variety of records were achieved in on-base percentage, runs scored, stolen
bases and triples. Beltz earned NAIA All-American honors in two sports, and to date he is the only
athlete to accomplish that feat in over 100 years of intercollegiate athletics at Geneva. Beltz holds as
his fondest collegiate memory the 1993 baseball team’s advancement to the NAIA World Series where
the Golden Tornadoes upset the number one ranked team in the opening game of the tournament 2-1.
After graduating from Geneva College, Beltz returned to the Freedom Area School District as
an assistant football and baseball coach for one year. He then enrolled at Robert Morris University,
where he received an MBA degree and helped coach the Colonials to four football conference
championships and one national championship. In 1999 Beltz became Freedom’s athletic director and
transportation coordinator, but that tenure only lasted one season as the lure of coaching pulled him
into the Beaver Area School District where he is in his fourteenth year as head football coach. He has
achieved great success with the Bobcats football program. In the past decade, Beaver has captured a
share of the conference title three times and has been a playoff participant 9 of the past 11 seasons.
Professionally, Beltz is currently serving as principal of the Beaver Area Middle School and has
reached the dissertation stage of a doctorate program in education at Youngstown State University.
He is single and resides in Hopewell Township.
RICHARD L. BYRNE
“Be Prepared.” -Boy Scout Motto
Richard Byrne, a 1970 Freedom Area High School graduate, was born in Ambridge on July 31,
1952 to Raymond (Jerry) and Geraldine (Gerry) Byrne. In fourth grade he moved to Conway and the
Freedom Area High School District.
Byrne was active in the Boy Scouts, joining a newly formed Troop in seventh grade, and has
the distinction of becoming the first Eagle Scout in Conway. The lessons learned in scouting,
including the Scout Oath and the Scout Law, have guided Byrne throughout his life, and for many
years he served as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader.
In high school, Byrne was what might be termed a nerd-jock (rather than a jock-nerd); he was
president of the National Honor Society and captain of the cross-country team. Byrne ran a pretty
mean two-mile in track. Byrne graduated from Freedom Area High School in 1970.
As a child growing up, Byrne had aspirations of being a lawyer. He also enjoyed and did well
in math and science. His high school teachers encouraged him to take engineering in college, but
Byrne did not know how to pursue his legal goal with an engineering degree. Prior to graduating from
high school, he was counseled that he could major in engineering in college, attend law school and
combine those two degrees to become a patent lawyer.
Byrne attended Carnegie-Mellon University and was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in
Electrical Engineering in 1974. He then attended George Washington University Law School, which
had then and still has an excellent patent law program, and was awarded a Juris Doctor degree in
1978. He served as president of the Student Patent Law Association in his last year of law school.
Byrne was admitted to the bar of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1978 and to the
District of Columbia bar in 1979. Following law school graduation, Byrne spent two years as a law
clerk and technical advisor to Judge Jack Miller of the United States Court of Customs and Patent
Appeals in Washington, D.C. Byrne returned to Pennsylvania in 1980 and joined the Pittsburgh based
patent and intellectual property law firm of Webb Burden Robinson & Webb. Byrne has remained at
the same firm, now known as The Webb Law Firm, for his entire private practice legal career. The law
firm has grown from eight lawyers in 1980 to forty-five lawyers in 2013 and is recognized as the
premier patent and intellectual property law firm in Western Pennsylvania. His partners recently
voted Byrne president of The Webb Law Firm.
Rick has engaged in all aspects of patent and intellectual property law while at The Webb Law
Firm, including patent preparation and prosecution, trademark matters, copyrights, opinion work,
client counseling, and intellectual property litigation in the state and federal courts. Recently, Byrne
is handling an extensive international patent and trademark practice, including filings made in the
United States for clients from around the world, and filings made outside the United States on behalf
of the firm’s domestic clients. He has traveled extensively to Asia and has lectured Asian intellectual
property lawyers on United States law.
During 1993-1994, Byrne was president of the Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law
Association. Since 2006, Byrne has been recognized as among the Best Lawyers in America in The
Chambers USA America’s Directory for Leading Lawyers for Business, and as a Pennsylvania Super
Lawyer. Byrne was named the 2011 Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Lawyer of the Year and the 2012
Pittsburgh Patent Litigation Lawyer of the Year by The Best Lawyers in America.
Byrne and his wife of 39 years, Marie, reside in Upper St. Clair, PA. They are the proud
parents of Michael, Jeremy, Matthew and Peter.
JOHN MALAGISE
“Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.”
-Albert Schweitzer
Born on August 12, 1950, John Malagise is one of seven children born to Angelo and Anna
Malagise. As a youth he resided on 5th Avenue in Freedom and attended St. Felix Grade School. He
was a guard for the St. Felix basketball team where he set a single game scoring record 38 points
during the eighth grade Knights of Columbus Tournament. (This is where, incidentally, he was
introduced to his wife of 42 years, Debbie Padgett).
Malagise graduated from Freedom Area High School in 1968 where he was a three-year letter
winner in football, baseball, basketball and track. His love and knowledge of sports continued when
his three children, Craig, Matthew and Jocelyn, attended Freedom. He coached youth football, was
president of Freedom Little Bulldogs and served as president of the Freedom Quarterback Club. He
also coached youth baseball from Little League to American Legion and served as equipment manager
for Freedom baseball teams from Little League to American Legion. Malagise also served as
chairman of the New Sewickley Township Recreation Board. Last year he coached his
granddaughter’s fourth grade basketball team to an undefeated season and currently coaches the girls
fifth grade team and assists with the girls eighth grade basketball teams.
Professionally, Malagise attended Penn State University, New Kensington Campus, and
completed the four- year Electrical Apprenticeship at Local Union 712 of the International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers from 1971-1975. He then completed Union Steward, Local Union
Leadership and Union Counseling courses and attended the George Meany College of Labor Studies.
This led him to a position as general foreman in charge of all electrical maintenance at the Beaver
Valley Nuclear Power Stations Units 1 and 2. In 1991 he was elected as vice president of Local Union
712 and in 1992 was appointed president. He was re-elected president in 1994; elected as business
manager in 1997 and re-elected in 2000. In 2001 Malagise was appointed as International
Representative, where he served in the 3rd District Office until retiring December 31, 2012.
While an officer in Local Union 712 and an International Representative, Malagise served on
numerous committees and charitable organizations. He served as a trustee on Health and Welfare
Funds for ten years; presented COMET training module to officers and members of Local Union 712.
He served on the Penn State Beaver Advisory Board for nine years, the LaRoche College Labor
Advisory Board, the United Way Boards of Directors for six years and captained the Walk America
Team.
Malagise was the first labor representative ever appointed to the Beaver County Chamber of
Commerce Board of Directors, serving for three years. He served on the Labor Chairman-Beaver
County Labor Management Committee, where during his tenure as Chairman, he was instrumental in
regionalizing and amalgamating with Washington and Greene counties forming what is now the
Southwest Area Labor Management Committee. He was chairman of the Local Union 712 Labor
Management Committee, where he was the recipient of the Governor’s Award for Labor Management
Excellence Award from Governor Tom Ridge in 1998. Other offices held include serving as
secretary/treasurer of Beaver County Building Trades, president of the Tri-State Business Managers
Association, secretary/treasurer of Western PA Business Managers Association and
secretary/treasurer of the PA State Electrical Workers Association for ten years. Malagise also
presented IBEW training modules (Business Managers Training, Local Union Leadership Training,
Construction Stewards Training) to hundreds of officers and members of the IBEW. Malagise also
proudly served our country for seven years in the Army reserves from 1969 to 1976.
Continuing to serve the community through St. Felix Parish in Freedom, Malagise lectors,
cantors and actively participates in the Holy Name Society, where he served as president and
secretary. He has been a high school CCD teacher and with his wife Debbie developed pre-marriage
classes for young couples. Both currently volunteer at bingo. Malagise was selected St. Felix Parish
Man of the Year in 1999 and was the recipient of the Bishop’s Award in 2009.
Malagise and his wife of 42 years, Debbie, have three children, Craig, Matthew and Jocelyn,
and nine grandchildren with one of the way.
JAMES MANGANELLO
“The secret of success in life is for a man to be ready for his opportunity when it comes.”
-Benjamin Disraeli
James Manganello, better known as “Jimmy Maggs”, is a 1960 graduate of Freedom Area High
School. Born and raised in Conway, Manganello is the son of the late Joseph and Stella Manganello.
The elder Manganellos came from Sicily and knew the value of hard work, a trait they passed on to their
sons Jimmy and Dennis. Manganello attended Mt. Gallitzin Academy before enrolling at Freedom Area
High School where he participated in all sports. Because Freedom did not have a baseball program at
that time, he played baseball for Ambridge American Legion.
After high school graduation, Manganello attended the University of Miami where he played
football, basketball and baseball. Injuries during his junior year, a dislocated knee, broken ankle and a
compound leg fracture, ended his athletic career and his opportunity to play with the Washington
Nationals Minor League organization. When he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of
Miami in 1964, he could have accepted a teaching position in Rye, NY. Instead, he returned to Beaver
County to take over the family business.
Manganello’s work ethic and entrepreneurship were evident at an early age. He learned
through the example of his hard-working parents who owned and operated a bar and restaurant in
Conway for many years. His parents opened Imperial Lanes in 1955 where, while in high school,
Manganello worked as a pin boy on weekends and after school. This experience served him well, and in
1980 when the opportunity arose to purchase Baden Bowl, Manganello jumped at the chance and has
made it one of the premier bowling centers in Beaver County along with Center Lanes purchased in
1990.
Always a man who likes a challenge, Manganello was instrumental in keeping the Pittsburgh
Penguins in Pittsburgh. He was a friend of Eddie DeBartolo, the Penguin owner from 1977 to 1991.
Through that friendship, DeBartolo saw the interest, enthusiasm and organization skills in Manganello
and named him vice-president responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Penguins, a position he
held from 1981 to 1993. He had the opportunity to travel with the team and to this day has remained an
avid hockey fan.
Now the owner of The Club at Shadow Lakes, which he purchased in 2010, Manganello has
developed an 18-hole golf course, restaurant and banquet facility unrivaled in Beaver County. Well
known and well respected throughout Beaver County, Manganello was honored by the Mental Health
Association as its 2012 Man of the Year. However, his proudest achievements are his forty-seven year
marriage to Donna and their three daughters Jennifer, Janet and Jackie and grandchildren Nicolas,
Jacob, Alexa, and Francesca.
SAMUEL MITROVICH, JR., PhD
“Men love to wonder, and that is the seed of science.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
Born in Aliquippa in 1945, Samuel Mitrovich, Jr. Ph.D, taught at Freedom Area High School
for 40 years. Over those 40 years, Dr. Mitrovich was an accomplished and dedicated educator.
Dr. Mitrovich earned his Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree from Indiana University of
Pennsylvania. His formal education concluded at the University of Pittsburgh where he earned a
Ph.D. in biochemistry.
An innovative and committed educator, Dr. Mitrovich was recognized through numerous
teaching awards. He was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science
Teaching, the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award, the Kevin Burns Science Teacher
Award from the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh, and the Distinguished Alumni Award from
Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He was named Region 1 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year,
Pennsylvania Science Teacher of the Year, and the Pennsylvania Electric Association’s Outstanding
Pennsylvania Science Teacher.
In addition to being an extraordinary teacher, Dr. Mitrovich also gained distinction as a
cutting edge scientist. He was cofounder and principal scientist at Chem-Space Associates, an expert
in liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, and co-authored a book entitled A Global View of
LC/MS, now in its third printing.
Dr. Mitrovich was an award winning cabinet maker, sculptor, and lifelong learner with interest
in Russian literature, jazz, classical music, philosophy, and robotics. He was co-founder of the
McConnell’s Mills Preservation Association and the Ohio Valley Montessori School.
Dr. Mitrovich passed away June 27, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lois
Brozenick, three sons, and four grandchildren.
