Term 3 has been very busy and your children will be sharing all the various learning that is happening. Thank you to the many parents who are supporting this learning in so many ways. The coaching and managing of the sports teams is highly valued and has a huge impact on the range of sports the school can offer. Please remember to inform us if you are able to contribute either with sport or in any other way. We do need more support with grant sources and fundraising. Please help as we can do so much more with a greater access to funding. Please keep the focus on helping your child improve in all learning areas. Literacy and Maths are of course very important but do remember to talk and play with your children. We all lead such busy lives and sometimes forget it is the easy things like playing at the park, kicking and throwing a ball which help so much with learning. A few years ago I was standing outside my son’s school, when a four-wheel-drive pulled up and a woman got out, clutching a folder. She stood a few metres away from me, pulled out a mobile and tapped out a text message. A few moments later a short, skinny boy in school uniform ran up to her. “Hello Simon, here it is darling,” the woman said, proffering the folder to the boy.

The schoolboy, not more than 13 years of age, took one look at the folder and said loudly, “That’s the wrong one, you stupid cow! I needed my maths folder! Now I’m up s**t creek and it’s all your fault.”

The woman looked close to tears as she stuttered, “But Simon, I thought you said bring me the English folder. I did tell you to check your bag before you got in the car. I had to cancel an appointment to get this to you.”

Simon regarded his mother with an expression of utter contempt and said, “You are just hopeless”. No word of thanks, he simply turned on his heels and walked away.

Points to consider:

In the first instance, Simon’s mother should never have cancelled her appointment, in essence rewarding her son’s forgetful behaviour. This is classic helicopter-gunship/lawnmower/snowplough parenting paradigm – swooping in to rescue a child from his own indolence or laziness or forgetfulness.

We know Year 7s can be a bit scatterbrained, but the way they learn not to be is to have natural consequences for poor choices. Forget the folder, face the consequences at school.

Second, Simon should never have been allowed to speak to his mother in such a disrespectful way. One of Dr Phil’s favourite sayings is that “we teach people how to treat us” and Simon’s behaviour is not surprising given that his rudeness has probably been tolerated, if not throughout his childhood, certainly in early adolescence.

These boys have never been challenged when they refuse to take out the garbage bins, pick up the dog poo or stack the dishwasher; in essence to contribute to the running of the family.

Too many of today’s parents exhaust themselves trying to make their son’s lives easy by doing things that he can do for himself, leaping in to fix his problems, handing him every single opportunity on a plate and being his full time cheerleader.

All of these are the ingredients required for a self absorbed, lazy, entitled child. The child-centred parenting movement has swung too far in the opposite direction. We have become too terrified to say no, to set limits and enforce consequences in case we damage our children’s self-esteem. We seem to have turned away from the focus of raising civilised, polite, well-mannered boys and instead have gone to worship at the altar of “happiness”.

We are oblivious to the fact that by not allowing our children to learn from their own stuff-ups and develop resilience and self-respect, we are creating rudderless, disconnected, bitter and resentful boys who feel they can treat their parents (and other authority figures, like the police) in precisely the same way Simon treated his mother.

To find out more about raising adolescent boys please refer to Michael Carr-Gregg and Elly Robinson’s book The Prince Boofhead Syndrome.

Hot Topic… We are raising a generation of entitled teenage boys -

TE REO On Tuesdays our students have the opportunity to attend extra language lessons in te reo Maori. Matua has been teaching us sentence structure and how to answer questions in te reo. He teaches us words from story books and then we have to write our own sentences in our books using those words. Matua makes our lessons fun and exciting as well as teaching us how to pronounce the words correctly and use simple conversation! Ka mau te wehi!

REMINDER While most parents communicate and behave respectfully towards our teachers some do not. We ask that all communication is respectful as our staff should not be subjected to unacceptable language at any time. Please contact our Deputy Principals, Christine Pasfield and Brad Hill, or Anne Leitch, Principal if you have a concern.

Y4-8 SENIOR CROSS COUNTRY

Last week our Y4-8 students travelled to Moire Park for our Senior Cross Country run organised by Miss Lee. The weather was perfect and the track was a good challenge littered with mud, hills, native bush and bridges. We had ten races spread throughout the day and we had some great results with all our Year 7 Girls coming in under 20 minutes. Jess, our Sports Activator, had set up some great games for everyone to join in. A huge thank you to all the parent helpers, teachers and students for organising and participating. Miss Lee

NETBALL 2017 Rankings: Year 7/8 (Team 1) = 8th Y5/6 (Team 2) = 3rd Y5/6 Stars (Team 3) = 9th Kiwi A (Team 4) = Runners Up Kiwi B (Team 5) = 3rd

Thank you to all our supporters, coaches and managers!

Y3/4 RIPPA RUGBY These dedicated young men have shown great perseverance throughout the season, training twice a week for the past four months—in mostly less than desirable conditions! Their passion for the game was always evident and I was so proud that they played every game with all that they had. They learnt to develop respect for their team mates and looked out for one another on the field. After three tournament rounds and 9 games later, our amazing boys came 3rd equal in the competition. Well done Kian, Lachy, Cruze, Thomas, Brodie, Flynn, Wade, Aiden, Oliver, Charlie and Flynn! A fantastic effort boys, see you back on the field next season! Miss Yap

NOR WEST CROSS COUNTRY Congratulations to the 44 Y5-8 runners who competed at the Norwest Cross Country held at Muriwai Beach on Tuesday this week. Hobsonville School can feel very proud of both the achievement and support from all the runners. These are the top 15 individual results: Y6G: Carys B. (15th), Y6B: Michael R. (9th), Blake L. (14th), Y7G: Mia L. (7th), Y7B: Jacob A. (12th), Y8G: Kassidy M. (11th), Alex S. (12th), Y8B: Aiden M. (9th). Further congratulations to Mia L. and Aiden M. for placing in the top 10 and we wish them the best of luck for the Y7/8 Auckland Interzone Championships next Thursday in Pukekohe.. Mr Hill

STUDENT VOICE The Student Voice team has been fortunate to work on many projects to help develop the school. Lately two of our students have been working to improve our sandpit area, by creating a design of a sand and water play area for the juniors to have a fun and educational playtime. Another project we are working on are new room number signs. These are still being mocked up and we are almost ready to present our designs to Mrs Leitch. We are writing articles and compiling photos for a Y7/8 Yearbook but currently are unable to pay for the printing costs. We are trying very hard to secure sponsorship to help fund the printing, however, unfortunately we have had no takers yet. If you have a business that could help sponsor our Yearbook in return for advertising on the back cover, please contact us! Aria P

BNZ CLOSED FOR GOOD A big thank you to the volunteers from BNZ who came to our school on 23 August and worked all day in the hot sun waterblasting, shifting mulch and putting top soil on our

field. Our gardens and grounds are looking much tidier.

STAFF LITERACY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Teachers have found our on-going professional development on children’s writing extremely motivating and inspiring. We are so fortunate to be working alongside nationally acclaimed educational consultants Gail Loane and Sally Muir as part of our 2 year literacy professional development contract. ‘Focus 30’ is a weekly half hour where teams of teachers come together collaboratively to discuss our own learning, the progress of individual students and to plan together to develop literacy workshops that will lead our students to becoming joyfully literate, independent writers.

DAFFODIL DAY Last Friday we held a yellow Mufti Day and raised $750 for the Cancer Society. Thank you for your support.
