JANUARY 2014 2 Club Aims The Club encourages walking, skiing and similar outdoor activities, and promotes interest in the preservation of flora, fauna and natural scenery. Joining the Club Persons aged 16 years and over can apply for prospective membership. To become a full member, three qualifying walks and an Essential Skills Day have to be completed within 12 months of joining. For further details visit the Club website or contact the Membership Officer, Geoff O’Hara (03 6272 1225). Risk The Club is a group of people who enjoy bushwalks and similar activities, with trips organised on a voluntary basis by and for Club members. Every trip coordinator is an unpaid volunteer who organises the walk for fellow Club members. They are not paid professionals with commensurate training and responsibility. Thus each trip member is responsible for their own safety, suitability of equipment and personal skills. Members and visitors take part in Club organised activities at their own risk. The Club does not offer qualified first aid. Club activities involve inherent risks and dangers. The published Walk Previews grade the level of difficulty and distance, and may indicate some risks. However, unanticipated and unavoidable hazards can occur which result in serious injury or property loss/damage. For example, weather can be unpredictable and change quickly, tracks become treacherous and accidents can happen. Liability Members acknowledge and agree that in applying to become a member (of whatever grade) or renewing that membership of the Club that the nature of the activities carried out by the Club and by participating voluntarily, freely and at their own risk, are such that it would be unreasonable for the Club or any of its members acting on its behalf to be in any way responsible for any injury, or death, to members or to damage to their property and members hereby, to the full extent permitted by law, waive all of their legal rights of action against and fully release the Club for loss, damage or injury or death or loss or damage to property howsoever arising out of or in relation to member’s participation in the activities conducted by the Club including without limitation, liability for any negligent or tortuous Act or omission or breach of statutory duty on the part of the Club, its office bearers or agents. Insurance and Legal Matters The Club insurance covers public liability, excluding member-to-member events, during Club activities. Members' vehicles are not covered. For further information write to the Secretary on constitutional or legal matters and the Treasurer on insurance matters. I know many of you are familiar with the joys and freedom of this sort of travel. It was a wonderful new experience for me. Back in the role of President, I’m looking forward to working together with the rest of the executive committee to ensure our Club continues to thrive into the future. Thank you to Rupert and Helen for filling the President’s role while I was away. Sub committees, delegates and custodians for the coming year have been appointed. Please see the ‘Who’s Who’ pages at the back of the circular for details. Thanks to all these people who do such valuable work for the good of the Club. We still have a vacancy for a Publications Sales Officer; if you are interested in this position, please talk with me or another member of the Executive Committee. At our last meeting, the executive committee brainstormed some ideas for the coming year’s priorities. These included: reviewing the constitution, rules and by-laws, aiming to streamline them in line with current best practice; finalising and embedding revised hut management processes; promoting walks; encouraging leaders; improving attendance at general meetings; improving communication with members; revisiting our marketing plan; reviewing our risk management; promoting HWC interests to relevant organisations. Our next step will be to prioritise this list and decide key areas that we need to focus on. If you have ideas about any of these topics, we’d love to hear from you … please speak with me or any other member of the Executive. We received eight new member applications in the week following the recent Sustainable Living Festival. Some of these were no doubt the result of interest generated by the festival. We also sold $155 worth of Tramps at the festival (which more than paid for the $80 cost of having a stall). This is a great result … we started participating in the festivals last year, as one of the strategies in our marketing plan.

JANUARY 2014 7One issue that has been raised is the number of members turning up for some bicycle rides, which is sometimes larger than we would like for safety and comfort reasons. A few executive members are meeting with Brian Haas to consider ways of meeting this challenge. Work continues with our two website update projects: the walks database (enabling electronic walks previews and walks reports) and the routes database (providing information on a number of walking routes). I’ve heard that some walks coordinators feel uncomfortable about their technical ability to use the walks database. Please remember that the current manual system, using paper walks preview and walks report forms, will run alongside the web system. So walks coordinators will have the choice of using the existing manual system or entering walks and cycles directly onto the HWC web system. We expect the new web system will make life much easier for those coordinators who are able to use it and also for Vicki and our circular editors. Regarding the routes database, some examples should be up on the website by the time you receive this circular. Please have a look and provide feedback to Andrew … what you like and dislike about the examples, and any alternative ideas you may have.

Estimated cost $190 for boat transport.

1-9 March The Frankland Range LR Rupert Manners 6292 1310 [email protected] The Frankland range is one of the harder walks in Tasmania, but I thought I had better give it a go before the body packs up. WALK REPORTS Whalers Lookout - Oct with Yvonne Waller A fine day with light winds was enjoyed by 20 of us with good views of Maria Island. A leisurely lunch on top of Whalers Lookout with even more extensive views topped the day! A good leg stretch. South Wellington Circuit - Oct with Philip Le Grove Perfect weather conditions greeted 13 walkers at the start of our walk via the Giant Cairn to the Potato Fields and the Disappearing Tarn. All agreed the views and the enthusiasm of the group resulted in an enjoyable day. Margate Rivulet / Nierinna Creek - Oct with Felicity Walch The first part of this walk was very wet underfoot, and much of the rest very muddy, but we did at least get out of very buffeting winds. The walk was actually a little further than advertised - it was 9.5km + approx 250m ascent.

JANUARY 2014 27Tasman Coastal Trail - Oct with Rupert Manners Over the four days we walked from Waterfall Bay over Tatnells Hill and Mt Fortescue to Cape Pillar and out to Fortescue Bay. The weather was foul in Hobart but we had pretty good weather. Cape Pillar is truly magnificent and the Three Capes Track will certainly be wonderful if ever completed. It was fascinating to see the progress (or lack of it) on the track. I doubt that much more than 20% has been done so far and with most of the money spent it is hard to see how it will ever be so. The spring flowers were wonderful. Government Hills October with Bob Lawson I cancelled the walk to Mt Field East due to the forecast weather conditions for the area. The group agreed on the morning for a walk to the Government Hills on the Eastern shore which we finished before the wind and rain arrived. Cape Conella/Slide Track - Oct with Jim Baptist First section of cliff top track to the Cape was quite severely fire damaged with little evidence of a track underfoot. Views were unaffected and spectacular, especially from our lunch spot on the dizzy edge of Cape Conella. Fortunately the fire did not extend to the forest track taken on the return leg. Circuit completed in 6 hours by 10 walkers on a fine calm day. Peter Murrell Reserve with Roger Hurd Trip left Blackmans Bay foreshore along the Headland track to Suncoast Drive then via road and lane to the reserve at Burwood Drive. We walked north to Scarborough then west to Penrhyn and Heron ponds. From the ponds we ventured to Howden and our lunch spot at Stinkpot Bay lookout. Our return was to take in the nature trail then back to the cars. 25 starters and finishers enjoyed a fine day. Curio Bay - Salters Point October with Phil Watson The warm sunny weather set the scene for this most enjoyable walk along the Tasman Peninsular scenic coastline. The sharp eyes of the party spotted half a dozen different orchids amid a sea of wild flowers within the coastal heathland. One very sleepy tiger snake who was very reticent to move off the track kept the party on their toes. Cobbs Hill October with Rob Hill A second try at Cobbs Hill in 6 months was successful. Despite high winds and a roaming shooter we achieved the summit, albeit with a modified route. The strange named Genappe Spur was avoided as the tall trees swayed and shots sounded. The alternative valley was relatively wind free as was the more sheltered northerly side of Cobbs Hill ridge. Lunch was taken here and Blane led a contoured traverse until our leader’s left hearing aid became detached. A 10 minute search ensued ending when sharp eyed Lytton spotted it. A gradual climb got us to the view point without further mishap. The Derwent and Hobart panorama was worth the climb Tyenna Peak/ Lime Bay Oct with Helen Daly Mt Field was clagged with a heavy snow cover which would have made our planned destination of Tyenna Peak both difficult if not impossible. Lime Bay on the Tasman Peninsula was a good alternative given the weather forecast. A circuit from Lime Bay around the point to Sloping Main was enjoyed by all. Another opportunity to observe native orchids

JANUARY 2014 28Waterworks to The Springs - Oct with Warwick Risby The fine forecast and later start attracted thirty nine, yes 39, walkers including 4 prospectives. Morning tea at the concrete reservoir at start of Fingerpost Track. Tail-end Charlie HH did a great job not to lose anyone as the group spread out. This pleased the leader to find all abided instructions and we arrived at The Springs for an early lunch. The circuit walk returned via Fern Tree and Gentle Annie. We were delighted to find so many orchids along the way during the usual friendly chatter. A good walk in Spring sunshine, enjoyed by all. Tamar Valley Cycle Tour - Oct with Linda Cook Well, the promised 40 knot north westerly winds certainly didn't fail us! For the safety and comfort of the seven cyclists, we had to change the approach to Papers Beach. It was decided best to go from Evandale via White Hills quiet country roads through St Leonards to Launceston. This direction worked very well and we certainly deserved the long awaited coffee at a very smart cafe near the ornate Kings Bridge. It was a long and hard day’s ride and everyone crawled into their tents very early that night! The second day was glorious and the cycling a joy, especially when invited in for morning tea and biscuits by members of the Auld Kirk at Deviot. We went from salvation to damnation just up the road when sampling many a fine wine at our favorite vineyard, this would be the 20th year we have visited. The cyclists were not to be denied headwinds on the final day's ride and our gourmet morning tea at a tranquil location at Legana was most enjoyable. The last one and half hour's climb up from Launceston returned us much fitter and stronger thanks to the headwinds to Evandale! West Coast - Oct/Nov with Charles Chadwick We walked up Mt Owen on the first day. Mt Owen stripped of vegetation by past acid rains, the first signs of green growth emerging. Next day we started up Mt Murchison in mist which cleared to a brilliant sunny day with views of the Overland peaks. Farrell and Dundas were climbed. A relaxing and enjoyable trip. Thanks to the Cuthbertsons for the use of their cottage. Mt Mueller - Nov with Trish Colles Overnight rain made it seem unlikely that we would get to the top, but 12 hopefuls made a start just in case. We were rewarded by a pleasant, if cloudy day and 12 reached the summit for lunch and enjoyed great views in all directions. Third time lucky for two members of the group. Eastern Arthur Range and Crags of Andromeda - Nov with Timothy Bunge Due to the swift and deep water levels in the Cracroft River, the Eastern Arthurs Range walk began at Scotts Peak. All the peaks in the Eastern Arthur Range with points climbed prior to weather change except Federation; return journey featured drifts of hail and snow. Beautiful weather reappeared for a scenic detour via Lucifers Ridge, Lake Rosanne, the fascinating Crags of Andromeda, West Portal, Phoenix, Carina Bluff and Promontory Lake. Muddy exit via McKays Track. Encountered just one party of 4 en route. Magnificent scenery. Sad no takers for this walk! Mt Montagu Bike/Walk November with Nick Hume Good turnout as the forecast was terrible. Considering Spring thus far, perhaps it was just an average forecast! No loitering today. We went like the clappers. Morning tea at Wellington Falls. "Is the track here, or over there?" - meandering on and sometimes off track to the summit. Too windy to lunch on top, we stayed long enough to glimpse

JANUARY 2014 29Marian, Trestle, Collins Bonnet, etc. Sunshine at our lunch spot soon developed into full-on snow flurries and precipitated a rapid retreat. Cycling through sprays of mud was fun. Everything turned brown! The end of the day we rewarded all our efforts with coffees at the Ferntree pub. The Watcher - Nov with Mary Jolly Twenty-two people turned out on a bright sunny morning. We had a brief morning tea together before 4 walkers set off across Tarn Shelf and the 18 began the climb over the Rodway Range. It was a day of perfect alpine walking conditions made slightly more challenging by the intermittent banks of snow amongst the boulders. Lunch on The Watcher rewarded us with extensive views of the South West and the tarns across Newdegate Pass were as beautiful as ever. After a brief sojourn at Lake Newdegate, we ambled across Tarn Shelf and were reunited with our “splinter group” for coffee at the cars. A very satisfying day. Seven Day Saunter - Nov with Alison Street Despite the cold, and at times, wet weather, 8 of us had a successful walk from Lake McKenzie to Travellers Rest Lagoon. Some of the walk was not a saunter, but more of a slog, or in fact a slop across the swamp on the last day. A great trip for practising navigation skills (which lake is that?), through largely untouched country with very few signs of other walkers. Hiring a bus to drop us off at Lake MacKenzie and pick us up on the Lyell Highway worked very well. Glebe Hill & Waverley Park Wildflower Walk - Nov with Phil Watson The small circuit walk in Glebe Hill Bushland Reserve proved a botanical bonanza with carpets of the rare blue flowering chocolate lily dominating the floriferous woodland’s understorey. It is estimated the Bushland Reserve is home to a staggering 500,000 plants. The walk also traversed through a healthy population of very rare Risdon Gum. Waverley Flora Park lived up to expectations with a colourful diversity of wildflowers and orchids in full bloom. Tasman Trail – Nov with Jeanette Brown We had rain all the way down the Peninsula until we drove into the Waterfall Bay carpark when it stopped. On Thursday we started our Crescent Bay walk when the rain stopped at about 11am. Crescent Bay was as beautiful as ever and the spring wildflowers were at their best. On Friday we were joined by Tony and Joss Judd who came down for the day at the Historic Coal Mines. Those people who had not been there recently were very impressed with the work which has been done to make this a very interesting part of Tasmanian history. The Port Arthur Holiday Park was a great choice with excellent accommodation and facilities, abundant wildlife and a coastal walk to the Historic Site. Marion Bay 16 November. For the Marion Bay walk on the way home we had 5 day walkers join us. The weather by this stage was magnificent, the tide was just right for us to walk back on the bay side and the day proved a fitting end to a wonderful 4 days. We are now wondering where to go next year!! Cape Queen Elizabeth - Nov with Warwick Risby Ideal walking conditions for our group of 14 who were amazed to learn of the Goblet's history before continuing to the windy Cape to enjoy great views and lunch. We returned via Mars Bluff and back in the ferry queue in time for coffee completing an exciting day. (Note: Parking tight at Kettering ferry due to extensive road widening).

JANUARY 2014 30Waterfall Bay – Nov with Felicity Walch We walked the coast track from Tasman Arch to Waterfall Bay for lunch, after which 3 continued on to Camp Falls. The others retraced their route and attempted to find the track from Tasman Arch to the Blowhole, without success. We found no trace of the track at the Blowhole end and it may be that it no longer exists. This meant a road walk back to the cars, where we met up with the Camp Falls 3. A good day in unforecast good weather which got our 3 day stay at Port Arthur off to a good start. Berriedale to Windermere - Nov with Rinda Burgess A nice walk after all the rain. Pleasant company. Mt Field East Circuit - Nov with Paul Geeves We changed plans to visit Dog Hill to better fit the capabilities of the group and instead did the Mt Field East Circuit. Great weather made for a very enjoyable trip. The new section of track to cut out most of the road walk is a welcome improvement to the circuit. Lakes Belton and Belcher – Nov with Lee Douglas After initially getting caught up in the Point to Pinnacle race, we had a fairly straight forward trip up to Mt Field. The weather was mild and very still with many biting midges. The morning tea views of the south west were fantastic from the shoulder of Mt Mawson. The track was very wet and boggy underfoot (with two people disappearing up to the tops of their thighs!) along the valley floor. Given the state of the ground and the limited time, we decided to go up to Lake Belton only. This is a really lovely area to enjoy lunch and a cuppa and to relax. Oddly, I didn't see any wildflowers along the way except for the odd red scoparia. Thanks to all who came along to make this a fabulous day out. Merton - Nov with Felicity Walch We missed David’s presence and knowledge of the walk but with the aid of leaflet 115 the party of 8 found their objective - “historic Merton” - and had an enjoyable time fossicking around. Mt Montague Circuit - Nov with Jim Baptist Eight starters gathered at Betts Road but three were discouraged by the steady drizzle and returned home. Remaining 5 did an abridged version of the originally planned walk and summitted Cathedral Rock in patchy conditions ending in fairly steady rain. No views but a good workout covering 10kms over ground plus a height gain of 700m in a little over 3 hours. Introductory overnight walk - Labyrinth and The Acropolis - November with Rupert Manners The forecast for the four days was rain, rain, rain and rain - but the wind was from the east and I thought that Lake St Clair and an easterly should be somewhat reasonable. As we arrived at Pine Valley it was raining steadily but there was no one at the hut so we abandoned the camping option. The next day we went to Lake Elysia and the weather broke to give us great views of the Geryons and the DuCane Range. As we returned the rain, thunder and hail started. The next day we went up the Acropolis, again with rain coming and going but with enough breaks to keep our spirits up. However we got no views from the top. As we walked out the weather cleared to be clear and perfect. It was a great few days and although we did not camp, participants certainly got the pleasure of exploring this wonderful area.

JANUARY 2014 31Geilston Bay/Lindisfarne - Nov with Isabel Thorp Weather report was daunting but the day turned out to be beautiful, sunny, slight breeze, no rain at all. We had lunch at the leader’s house and then returned the way we had come. Very happy occasion. Mt Sedgwick - Nov with Rohan Hutchinson Leader had an injured foot therefore did not participate in this joint Canberra - HWC walk which was lead very ably by Rohan. Seven participated and objectives were achieved in showery weather. Mt Hobhouse - Nov with Rohan Hutchinson The day started out a bit misty but steadily improved. We were able to follow the bombardier track all the way to the base of the approach ridge, where a convenient creek provided a very pleasant morning tea stop. From there we commenced our climb beneath a lovely tall forest of pines, myrtle, celery top and eucalypts. This gave way to the expected steeper pinch involving light scrub and rocky outcrops before a final easy stroll to the summit. As we ate our lunch on top the mist and clouds dissipated and cameras emerged to capture excellent views north to the reserve peaks, west to the the KW range and south to the Spires. Our return was delayed slightly by a broken wrist (and a lost camera), but an impressive display of team work delivered the injured party to the cars without further incident. CYCLING
