Also in that year, he helped with the creation of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, testifying before Congress and serving on the Board of Overseers. Nearly thirty years after his first visit to Japan, Emperor Hirohito awarded him Japan's highest award that can be given to a non- Japanese, the Order of the Sacred Treasure. It was bestowed in recognition of his contribution to "the development of quality control in Japan and the facilitation of U.S. and Japanese friendship.” The Quality Trilogy , published in 1986, identified a third aspect to quality management, quality planning. In addition to these accomplishments, there is Juran's seminal role as a teacher and lecturer, both at New York University and with the American Management Association. He also worked as a consultant to businesses and organizations in forty countries, and has made many other contributions to the literature in more than twenty books and hundreds of published papers (translated into a total of seventeen languages) as well as dozens of video training programs. In 1987, Dr. Juran, with a sigh of relief, relinquished his leadership of Juran Institute, Inc. After a triumphant series of lectures in 1993-94, "The Last Word" tour, he ceased all public appearances in order to devote his time to writing projects and family obligations. Since then he has published the History of Quality and other books.

Joseph M. Juran1904 - 2008

Joseph M. Juran is characterized by a remarkable span and an extraordinary intensity. He has been called the "father" of quality, a quality "guru" and the man who "taught quality to the Japanese." He is recognized as the person who added the human dimension to quality, broadening it from its statistical origins to what we now call Total Quality Management.

Juran's early years were anything but free from trouble. Joseph Moses Juran was born December 24, 1904, in the city of Braila, part of Romania. His father, Jakob, was a village shoemaker. Sometime after 1904, the family moved to Gurahumora, a Carpathian mountain village, then a part of the Austria Hungarian Empire. In 1909, Jakob left Romania seeking a better life in America. The entire family joined Jakob in Minneapolis in 1912.

To make ends meet, the children went to work at whatever jobs they could find. Joe drove a team of horses; he also worked as a laborer, a shoe salesman, bootblack, grocery clerk and as a bookkeeper for the local icehouse. At age 16 he entered the University of Minnesota and graduated in 1920 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. His industrial career began at Western Electric where they placed him in the inspection department. By 1937 he was the head of the Industrial Engineering Department.

In December of 1941, Juran took a "temporary" leave of absence from Western Electric to serve in Washington as an assistant administrator with the Lend-Lease Administration, which managed the shipment of goods and material to friendly nations deemed crucial to the war effort. After the war, he went on his own.

He wrote the standard reference work on quality control, the Quality Control Handbook, first published in 1951 and now in its fourth edition. In 1954, he delivered a series of lectures to Japanese managers which helped set them on the path to quality. The classic book, Managerial Breakthrough, first published in 1964, presented a more general theory of quality management, comprising quality control and quality improvement. It was the first book to describe a step-by-step sequence for breakthrough improvement, a process that has become the basis for quality initiatives worldwide. In 1979, Juran founded the Juran Institute to create new tools and techniques for promulgating his ideas. The first new tool was Juran on Quality Improvement, a pioneering series of video training programs. Also in that year, he helped with the creation of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, testifying before Congress and serving on the Board of Overseers.

Nearly thirty years after his first visit to Japan, Emperor Hirohito awarded him Japan's highest award that can be given to a non-Japanese, the Order of the Sacred Treasure. It was bestowed in recognition of his contribution to "the development of quality control in Japan and the facilitation of U.S. and Japanese friendship.”

The Quality Trilogy, published in 1986, identified a third aspect to quality management, quality planning.

THANKS!That is all I can say to the 342 people who responded to the Section survey. The Long Range Planning Committee (LRPC) was extremely happy with the number of responses that were received along with the quality of the response comments. It has given the LRPC a lot to think about when it comes to the Section’s long range planning activities. The Voice of the Customer has been heard.

The LRPC will be holding planning meetings with the Section Board to review the data from the survey and develop long range plans for the Section. Improvements will be forthcoming.

The Section Board is very happy about those of you that indicated that you want information about involvement opportunities in our various committees. More than 70 of you indicated interest in involvement opportunities. The Board will be contacting each of you to find out your area of interest.

On a sadder note, Dr. Joseph Juran passed away on February 28th at the age of 103. A leader in the field of Quality, his work led to the business methodologies known as Six Sigma and Lean manufacturing. In 1979 at the age of 75 he established the Juran Institute providing a wide range of training and consulting services designed to improve overall business performance.

In 1937 he created the Pareto Principal which is used to separate the “vital few” from the “useful many”, it is also known as the 80-20 rule. He wrote the first text in 1951 on Quality Management known as the Quality Control Handbook which is still used today as a standard reference for quality professionals. In 1964 he wrote Managerial Breakthrough a methodology for improvement which is considered the starting point for Lean and Six Sigma. He published The Juran Trilogy in 1986 which defined the management process in order to improve. The trilogy is Quality Control, Quality Improvement, and Quality Planning; terms that are synonymous with his name.

He was born in Braila, Romania and migrated to Minnesota when he was 8. He earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota and a law degree from Loyola University. His name is on the Center for Leadership and Quality at the University of Minnesota. He was married for 81 years to his wife Sadie. When he passed away he was working on yet another book.

Read more about Dr. Juran and the Juran Institute at the institute’s web site: http://www.juran.com.

“Whatever you do, make sure it improves society. Don’t just do it for the sake of profit.”

“My job of contributing to the welfare of my fellow man is the great unfinished business.”

Joseph M. Juran (1904-2008)

I am dedicating this issue of The BenchmarQ to the

As a business consultant, I frequently recommend networking to my clients. Time and time again the response is pretty much the same, the color drains from their faces, they look faint and I can practically see their brain scanning for excuses. Just the thought of networking is enough to make the bravest hearts quake in fear.

I understand all the emotional reasons people are reluctant to place themselves in a situation ripe with uncertainty but it is a necessary evil. Alas it’s not all doom and gloom, I’m here to tell you that networking can be fun and exciting.

The following are a few tips to get you started. I’m sure if you try some of these you’ll be surprised how easy networking can be.

1. Network with a friend. It’s much easier to walk into a room with someone you know than to walk into a crowded event alone. The key is to circulate and meet new people. It’s also a good idea to have a clear picture of what you’re both looking for from the event, that way you’ll be able to introduce the other to someone they would want to know. Warning, do not spend the entire evening chatting with your friend!

2. Start small. Even the seasoned networker could get cold feet walking into a group of 200 strangers who all seem to know each other. Look for small events and attend those first. It’ll be easier to get to know people and have conversations if you aren’t in a huge room filled with people.

3. Know your message. Don’t wait until you’re at the networking event to figure it out. It just won’t happen that quickly. Figure it out and practice it beforehand. You may need to get professional help to do this. Spend the time and the money to create a motivating message that engages people, helps them to understand what your product or service is and makes them want to do business with you.

4. Wear something that you look fabulous in, that you love and that you are comfortable in. It really makes a difference in how you enter the room. When you know you look great, it’s easy to shine.

5. Know something about the group before you attend. Do some online research and ask friends or business associates what they know about the particular group. Having this additional information will offer you a variety of icebreakers to use during the event as a way to start conversations. If by chance you come in contact with the founders of the group, you’ll be able to impress them with your knowledge of the organization. A great way to gain immediate acceptance to just about any group.

6. Call the organization and offer to help out at the event. Networking groups as usually short handed and an offer for help is usually enthusiastically accepted. Having a job to do at the function will allow even the shyest person to take the focus off of themselves and deal with the business at hand, which is getting to know other people. This approach usually facilitates relationship building at a deeper level and should immediately boost your networking efforts.

7. Support a charity at the event. This gives you a reason to talk to everyone present. Approaching people initially in the interest of helping others will usually turn to a conversation about what you do and voila, a connection. Two connections actually, one for the charity and one for you.

8. Attend Brilliant Babble – Is Your Networking Notworking? Offered at the ASQ Monthly Section Committee Meeting on April 8th at The Bloomington Sheraton.

I hope you have found this information useful. If want to hear more please join us for the Brilliant Babble presentation. I look forward to meeting you there.

On Friday, February 22, the Minnesota Federation of Engineering, Science, and Technology Societies (MFESTS) presented awards to outstanding young and “distinguished” individuals at the 44th Annual Engineers Week Banquet held at the University Club in downtown Saint Paul. The Richard S. Alberg Distinguished Science and Technology Professional Award was presented to Wayne Ellison.

MFESTS is an “umbrella” organization made up of 16 engineering and science societies with sections, chapters, or posts in Minnesota. As a result, over 10,000 professionals are under the umbrella of MFESTS.

The history of the Federation began in August 1916 when six technical societies within the state decided to band together and formed what was then called the Joint Engineering Board. “The Board was formed to secure a more effective cooperation among Engineers for the welfare of the profession, to correlate the work of the different Engineering organizations for unity of action, and for betterment in the standards of practice and greater recognition of the Engineers before the public.” In 1921 the Joint Engineering Board became the Minnesota Federation of Engineering Societies. In 2004 the designation of Science and Technology was added to name to better refl ect the breath of technical professions that are encompassed by the Federation.

Distinguished Science and Technology Professional Award

Richard S. Alberg Distinguished Science and Technology Professional Award recognizes outstanding lifetime achievements in the practice of science and technology, contributions to their profession, and actions enhancing the image of science and technology in our society. Dick Alberg was a board member of MFESTS and ASQ – Minnesota at the time of his passing in 2005. He thoroughly enjoyed working in the fi eld of quality engineering and traveled around the world providing his expertise to various manufacturing facilities. This is the fi rst year that we have the honor of presenting this award.

C. Mr. Ellison is currently a Senior Quality Specialist for 3M. In a career spanning more than 25 years with 3M, he has developed and implemented numerous quality programs. One of these was a “cost of quality” model that resulted in a 60% reduction of quality adjustment costs and a 70% reduction in product defect rates at a major 3M business unit. After its initial success, it was implemented throughout 3M. He has helped plan and organize numerous technical conferences, including the Minnesota Quality Conference every year since 1982. He has also served as an offi cer of various technical societies, and he was a 3M Visiting Wizard (outreach program to K-12 students) for 17 years.

t For many years I’ve been thinking about the key to true success. I’ve spent countless hours contemplating the formula. Wondering, what are its properties, how are they combined and in what amounts? As a chemical engineer as well as a quality specialist, I’m sure you can imagine the detail necessary for an analysis of this scope. Add to the mix subjective factors like available resources, personality types and existing networks and you have the making of an unmanageable project. Being a persevering person, I continued to contemplate this question for many years, sometimes thinking I might never find the answer.

Throughout my career at 3M and as a volunteer with ASQ I have met many amazing people. Whether experts in their fields or individuals just lending a hand I have benefitted from their knowledge.

I have had the pleasure of reporting to some truly great managers. I learned so much from them and sometimes still hear their voices guiding me as I move through my days. My peers have often been as crucial to my success as the bosses. They have been there to support, guide and consul me on even my most challenging days. Without a doubt, those that I have benefitted most from were the individuals that I lead. Like holding a big, giant spot light they were able to show me the clearest picture of all.

I initially started volunteering with ASQ in an effort to give back to an organization that I felt was instrumental to my professional success. I started on the Member Services Committee and had a great time. We worked on developing an ASQ MN website and hiring our very own webmaster. I met scores of exciting Quality professionals during the membership drive. We conducted surveys at ASQ MN Conferences and made changes that resulted in higher member’s satisfaction. It was an amazing year and all the time I was getting closer to finding the answer to my question.

Then I was asked to join the board and help with project planning, SMP. I was honored that the chair - elect had personally asked me to join. To this day I still have his voice mail message. He made a big impact on my life. His dedication to the people we served was inspiring and I learned some tremendous lessons from him. We ended up with the Bronze Award for SMP and I didn’t realize how close I was to my answer.

I then moved into the position of treasurer. After all the fun and excitement of SMP, I was now stuck in a paper pushing system, as treasurer. This was not my favorite role but with the support of the board and volunteers I was able to implement an electronic approval system.

So there I was as Chair – Elect and looking forward to doing even greater things at ASQ MN than ever before, when it hit me. Like a thunderclap and as plain as day, I had the answer. How could it have eluded me for so long when it was right in front of my face?

Like a video playing just for me, I saw the faces of the generous people I had known. I watched as they offered suggestions to help others solve problems and meet challenges. At that moment, it dawned on me that the first part of the formula was sharing.

As I looked more closely, I felt rather than saw their pleasure. I could literally feel their spirits’ coming alive through their concern. I realized the second part of the formula was caring.

Now other people filled the screen and I saw groups cheerfully interacting. This one was easy and I got it right away. After so many years, I recognize volunteering when I see it. The third part of the formula is giving.

I give this formula to you to use freely, openly and without reservations. I know that you have a wealth of knowledge to share, have a caring spirit and give with open arms. You are the key to the success of this formula. In fact, you hold the key to the future and I know you will use it wisely.

YOU are the key to it all.
