GRACE + TOLU
New York City is a
natural fit for a couple
immersed in the music
industry, and that’s
certainly the case
for newlyweds Grace
and Tolu Adeyeno, who both have
found career success there. But when
it came time for their recent nuptials,
the couple knew the only place that
would do was Columbia. The couple
met at a local camp when they were 16,
says Grace. “Our family and friends are
here, so this was a natural,” she adds.
On a drive in Fulton, she found
the right venue for the ceremony:
Good Hope Presbyterian.
The couple decided on Tolu’s family
backyard for the reception. “This gave
the reception a personal touch, but it
wasn’t constrained,” Grace says. “We
used a main tent for dinner and dancing
and smaller tents for cocktails.”
Around 150 guests attended the
wedding and reception, and the bridal
party featured three bridesmaids and
two groomsmen. The couple interwove
their musical interests into many
aspects of the day. “We wrote a piece
for the ceremony called the ‘Chord
Accord,’ using the symbolism of a
chord to depict how we came together
in love and life,” says Grace. Tolu
composed a companion piano piece
that segued into the recessional music.
Many of the couple’s friends are also
musicians, and some participated in the
event. “Guests arrived to the sound of
our friends playing the piano and guitar,”

GRACE + TOLU
Grace says. The guitarist also played
as the bride walked down the aisle.
Tolu surprised the bride by
joining two of the couple’s friends
in a special arrangement.
Personal, handmade touches also
highlighted the day. Grace, a skilled
calligrapher, made signs for the reception
from ornate frames, black chalkboard
paint and chalk. Friends made the flower
arrangements and table settings.
In a nod to the couple’s heritage, the
reception food was a mixture of Cuban
and Nigerian fare, some made by family
members. The reception DJ, a friend
of Tolu’s with a deep knowledge of
Nigerian music, played many tunes with
West African roots. All in all, the event
couldn’t have been better, says Grace.*

NEELIMA + PRAVEEN
You could say that
26-year-old Neelima
Piedy and 28-year-old
Praveen Yellela know
a thing or two about
wedding celebrations.
The two IT professionals from Ellicott
City marked their commitment
with ceremonies both in India
and here in Howard County,
accommodating more than 3,200
people between the two events.
“We both have a lot of family
in India, so we wanted to involve
them over there,” explains Neelima.
“At the same time, we have plenty
of friends and family here, too,
so we made sure we had a nice
reception to include them.”
The traditional Indian ceremony
lasted for five days. The guest
list over that time period
topped out at 3,000 people.
Back here in the States, Neelima
and Praveen opted for a small
courthouse wedding with only a few
family members in attendance.
The couple met in 2012, while
working together in Pennsylvania.
“Our families had been friends for
years but lost touch due to moves,”
Neelima explains. “When I first
started working in Pennsylvania,
Praveen sat in my work area.”
Though they were office mates,
the two never really communicated
until Neelima’s cousin showed her
some photos of an old school friend
and his brother, whom Neelima
recognized as her colleague from
work. Introductions were made,
and the two formed a friendship
that led into a romance.
Praveen, who had grown up in
Maryland, often served as a tour
guide for Neelima, who hailed from
Michigan. One of their favorite
places to go is the riverfront in
D.C. “We have so many great
memories of our visits to D.C., and
it is very special to us,” she says.
It was the natural setting,
therefore, for Praveen’s proposal
to Neelima. “He asked me a year
ago November on the river in front
of the FDR memorial,” she says.
Their wedding reception in
the States, Neelima says, “was
the perfect day because it was a
celebration of our love surrounded
by our families and friends. We spent
three years dating, almost an entire
year planning the wedding, and it all
came to an end with the reception.”
While the day went off without a
hitch, Neelima is happy to remind
brides-to-be that “the wedding day
is never about the dress, the venue,
the cake or the flowers. Everything
could go wrong and you’d still have
the most beautiful wedding ever
because you and your partner are
in blissful, cherished love.”*

CATIA + MARK
Catia Da Silva always
knew she wanted a
storybook wedding,
and that’s exactly what
she got when she
married husband Mark
Baker this past year at Turf Valley Resort.
Complete with a white carriage pulled by
two black horses, the couple managed to
include all the details Catia had dreamed
of to make the day picture perfect.
The couple met in 2009. “I moved
to Boston in 2003 from my home
country of Brazil,” Catia explains.
“Mark was from Ellicott City but our
paths crossed in Copley Square.”
Four years of dating led to Mark’s
proposal in 2013, just minutes before
the two headed off to Brazil for their
first trip to Catia’s homeland together.
“From that moment on, we were
planning our wedding,” she says.
As residents of Turf Valley, the couple
watched many a wedding in their
“backyard,” and knew it was the right
venue for their own ceremony. The
only question was how to personalize
the event and infuse it with all the
storybook trimmings that Catia craved.
“Our nicknames are Bee and Honey
Pie, so we included honey jars as
part of the favors,” Catia explains.
They also had towels embroidered
with American and Brazilian flags.
The couple’s guiding principle for the
wedding, says Catia, was that “nothing
you do is wrong” and therefore felt free
to incorporate all of their ideas, however
diverse they might be. The two are
outdoor enthusiasts, so they had the
ceremony outside. They’re avid cyclists, so
they included Mark’s childhood bike. With
a nod to their heritages, they included
musical selections from both countries.

At the top of the list, however, was
the involvement of family and friends,
says Catia. “We saw a quote that the
most important thing for a beautiful
wedding is a bride, a groom and the
people they love most,” she explains.
“This is so true: because of the many
family and friends who were able to
join us, the day was so special.”
Catia says that the couple tries to live
each day with the same feelings and
emotions they shared on their wedding
day. “If you were to ask us if we’d change
anything about our wedding, the answer
is no,” she says. “Not a single thing.”*

It takes a certain amount
of faith to book a wedding
venue without actually
seeing it, but 30-year-old
Hannah Peters and her
26-year-old fiancée Eileen
Lorenz apparently had complete
confidence when they booked
the historic Belmont Manor in
Elkridge, which at the time was
under heavy reconstruction.
Howard County Parks and
Recreation purchased the manor,
which sits on 68 acres and
includes the main house and
several smaller houses on the
property, in 2012. The organization
undertook the task of restoring it
to full grandeur. When Hannah,
a patent specialist, and Eileen,
an architect, checked the site
out over two years ago, the
project had a long way to go.
“We chose it based on what they
promised it would look like when
finished,” says Hannah. “But we
loved the historical charm and
the fact that it felt like we were
in the middle of nowhere.”
As remote as the place felt,
its central location also won the
couple over, as did the fact that
they would be able to use so much
of the available space. “We had the
ceremony on the front lawn,” says
Hannah. “Then we moved indoors
for cocktails and into the back yard
under tents for the reception.”
More than 120 guests attended
the October ceremony. The
wedding followed four years of
dating after the two met online
in 2011. They were engaged in
2014 and then concentrated on
designing their perfect day.
Both women are
environmentally conscious and
wanted to weave that ethos
into their day. “The ‘theme’ for
our ceremony was the tree,”
Hannah explains. “We both
have a fascination with trees
as a representation of life and
growth.” During the ceremony,
Hannah’s brother read an
abridged version of The Giving
Tree by Shel Silverstein along

with a small commentary that she had written
about how the book’s theme of selfless giving
related to the couple’s outlook on marriage.
Hannah and Eileen also held a tree-planting
ceremony in which their mothers, says Hannah,
“laid the soil to represent the foundation for our
new life together, as parents lay the groundwork
for their children." This ceremony, she says,
took place “overlooking the beautiful forested
landscape laid out on Belmont's front grounds.”
Beyond its beauty, Belmont won the couple
over with its one-stop shopping. “Most places
we considered required that you put a lot
of pieces and parts together, but Belmont
provided everything in one spot,” Hannah
says. “We thought everything was amazing.”
If she could pick a favorite moment from the
evening, it was when a group of friends and a
niece performed “I Won’t Give Up,” by Jason
Mraz. “According to the guests, there wasn’t
a dry eye in the house,” Hannah says. “It felt
so personal, special, and full of love.”*
