4. Read the text given below and reflect on what kind of film is being shot here and what is the attitude of the people involved in the shooting. What kind of dilemma is the actor facing and how is he trying to prepare himself for the shot? (Marks/vad 10)

First day of shooting, and I realize I have no idea whatsoever how to play this character. Usually, by this time, there's some slight inkling at least; some impulse. I've been waiting for something to start taking place inside me, but nothing's visited so far. I've read the novel that the screenplay's based on. I've taken notes. I've read the screenplay several times. Taken more notes. But still, nothing. Somewhere, I read that Laurence Olivier said he liked to start with something from the outside and work his way in. Something very simple and obvious, like a limp or a facial twitch or a speech mannerism, and then allow that to work its way into the emotional life of the character. Maybe I should try a limp, although there's nothing in the material that even vaguely suggests lameness. I don't know what to do. I get dressed up in the costume. This is the first time I've put all the clothes on as an ensemble. Maybe something will happen. The fancy handmade English shoes; the tiny Italian tailor's perfect slacks; the period watch; the snakeskin belt. Still, nothing comes. Through the curtains in my trailer I can see a group of little Mexican boys with their reed flutes, jumping up and down outside my window and yelling at me to buy them and take them back with me to America. I put on the period hat and the period glasses. Something very distant starts to happen. This is a man who wears glasses and a hat! A minor revelation, but it's better than nothing. This is a man who wears a watch! He cares about time. He wears handmade English shoes. He's got some scratch! I stare at the shoes. They remind me of Robert Morley in John Huston's Beat the Devil. What period was that movie? Earlier. Had to be thirties; late thirties. This one is supposed to be the fifties. I remember the fifties. I lived through the fifties, but it doesn't help. My memories of the fifties have nothing to do with this character's. I remember great Chevys with fins and Tijuana girls in tight split skirts. That's about it. Something about Beat the Devil strikes a chord. European sleazy characters stranded in an exotic environment. Similar to this. Dust. Bogart. Peter Lorre. Brecht. No! Not Brecht! Don't get off the track here. It must be the German influence that's causing this. Maybe I'll try out a walk. Just for the heck of it. Just a simple walk. Nothing fancy. I start pacing the aisle of the trailer in full costume, with the suit coat slung over my shoulder. I'm hoping a walk will emerge. A particular walk, characteristic of the character. A walk that feels unlike my own walk yet close enough that I won't feel stupid doing it. I feel stupid enough already in this getup, with no clue who I'm supposed to be. Out of the corner of my eye I catch the orphan kids' heads popping up and down at the window, laughing at my walk. There's a knock on my trailer door. The first of many to come. They want to see me in the makeup trailer. I haven't even found my walk yet, and they want me for makeup!
