    The big top at the Espace Fontvieille will be decked in lights for the event, just like

    every year. The worlds most famous circus festival is held here, in the heart of the

    Principality, and the magic is always mesmerizing. The 34th Monte Carlo InternationalCircus Festival runs from January 14-24, 2010. It will again introduce audiences to

    performing artists from the four corners of the earth. All the circus specialties will

    make their appearance: acrobats, clowns, tamed animals and lions, and much more.

    Created in 1974 by Prince Rainier III of Monaco, this must-see event continues to grow

    and expand the ranks of the Clown dOr prizewinners, an annual honor awarded to

    the best circus act. In keeping with tradition, the Open Air Circus Show will again be

    held in the city for the Monegasque public on January 16. This

    show without walls will feature parades of clowns and

    performances against a musical background. Journalists fromaround the world will attend the Festival, which is chaired by

    H.S.H. Princess Stephanie of Monaco and receives extensive

    media coverage. Reserve now to attend this remarkable Festival.

    Whats in store for us at the 34th festival?This is going to be a trs grand cru a great year! Were setting a record, with 20countries and 28 different acts. You wont nd a circus arts event like this anywhereelse. This year, Africa will be represented for the rst time, with an act from Kenya.Many other countries, including Colombia, Switzerland, Canada, Russia and Ukraine,will be in the ring too. Were also featuring animal acts. There will be a very modernopening with pigeons, and an act featuring 12 lions and a very unique animal a greatwhite lion. Horsemen from the Caucasus, who ride at eye-popping speed, will enterthe ring, too.

    How did you assemble and choose from so much talent in such a short time?We know that youve got to see the acts live. I travel a lot, see lots of performancesand then watch the acts again with H.S.H. Princess Stephanie. We have our preferencesand, in collaboration with our artistic advisors, we hold meetings and make decisions.But we always try to stay ahead. We already have a very long list of acts to see for the35th festival, which will be held in 2011. There are many circus schools around theworld that are offering a number of new acts. We take note of them from year toyear so Im on top of the best developments in the circus world.

    How would you like to see the International Festival evolve?We have achieved an extraordinary level. The circus world considers this festival to bethe most prestigious platform in the field. The Clown dOr Prize is also the mostprestigious award for artists. In any event, the job is to stay number one and present amix of acrobatics, comedy and animal acts. These are the three pillars of thetraditional circus. Our duty is to uphold that tradition with the classic circus. Thatsthe goal of our festival both for the public and by continuing to provide high-levelsupport to the circus culture.

    The International Dance Biennial, organized by the Monaco Dance Forum (throughJanuary 4, 2010), will honor Serge Diaghilev on the occasion of the Centennial ofthe Ballets Russes. Featuring an array of theatrical events, ballet performancesand concerts, the Monaco Dance Forum will highlight the quintessence of theBallets Russes remarkable heritage. The program is meant to be rigorous and

    instructional. The Ballets de Monte-Carlo, whose seasonhas been incorporated into the Monaco Dance Forum,will participate in this unique artistic process. The rst actis called, simply, Danse. The program will feature severalperformances inspired by the Ballets Russes. Jean-ChristopheMaillot, artistic director of the Ballets de Monte-Carlo since1993, will choreograph Scheherazade, to be performed at the

    Grimaldi Forum Monaco on December 27.

    MELODIES IN TREBLE CLEFYakov Kreizberg became artistic director of the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestraover a year ago. Performance after performance, no two concerts have ever been thesame. The Orchestra takes a non-parochial attitude toward its repertory and everyperformance is con brio. Kreizberg has been very involved in the Ballets RussesCentennial and in developing a cycle dedicated to composer Gustav Mahler. He hasbrought fresh energy to the Orchestra.     AN EXCLUSIVESarah Bernhardt inaugurated this mythical gilded opera house, with its exquisiteornate details, in January 1879. This year, the Salle Garnier of the Opra de Monte-Carlo celebrates its 130th winter, and the 2010 season offers a rich listing of events.Under the direction of Jean-Louis Grinda, the Opera will resound with the strains ofthe loveliest airs in the classical repertoire, from the Tales of Hoffman to Verdi andthe Marriage of Figaro. With the participation of the Monte-Carlo Opera Chorus andthe Philharmonic Orchestra, every performance will offer an exceptional experience.

    On February 24, 2010, a one-of-a-kind concert in the Salle Garnier will mark the 200thanniversary of the birth of Polish pianist and composer Frederic Chopin. This event isorganized by the Polish Consulate in the Principality, with the support of the GrimaldiForum Monaco. All revenues from ticket sales will be donated to the Monaco RedCross. Soloist Filip Wojciechowski will play a superb selection of Chopins works,

    including tude op.25 n 11, the Revolutionarytude op.10 n 12, Ballade op.23, the HeroicPolonaise op.53, Nocturnes and the Fantaisie-Impromptu. The pianist will then join PawelPanta, on the contrabass, and Cezary Konrad,on percuss ion, for a unique musicalperformance. This jazz trio will presentmazurkas, tudes and several prludes.

    Based on close ties established more than 10 years ago among Japanese andMongasque artists groups, Reijinsha Co. Ltd. and the Monaco National Committeeof UNESCOs International Association of Plastic Arts, this gathering, held every Marchat the Auditorium Rainier III, features carefully selected works by artists from bothcountries. The encounter, organized in collaboration with the Direction du Tourismeet des Congrs de la Principaut de Monaco, fullls one of the key objectives of theInternational Association of Arts, a UNESCO-associated organization, which seeks tobring together and create relationships among artists, comparing the practice of art

    and artists lives around the world through meetings, seminars and exhibits in order to

    foster ideals of peace, tolerance and sharing. Support from Monacos Directorate ofCultural Affairs also confers legitimacy on the

    event, in a climate of openness and internationaloutreach. The encounter constitutes proof positivethat culture is a world without borders. Theseongoing exchanges also offer members of theMonegasque National Committee an opportunityto export their talent and present their works inOsaka every spring.

    78TH MONTE-CARLOAUTO RALLYPedal to the metal this winter!It has nally passed the test. For the second consecutive year, the Monte-CarloAutomobile Rally has chosen to adopt the schedule of the Intercontinental RallyChallenge (IRC), the FIA-authorized international series launched in 2007 byEurosport Events. This means Monacos event will receive extensive media coverage.

    Eurosport will broadcast live 14 of the 15 timed special stages, which will be heldfrom January 18-23. The championship, limited to S2000 cars and Group N, producesintense battles along Monte Carlos often snowy roads, where drivers have anunparalleled opportunity to show their stuff.
