HIV attacks the immune system and causes lifelong illness that may show no symptoms for many years. Treatment can stop progression to severe illness and AIDS. AIDS indicates the end-stage of HIV infection resulting from the destruction of the immune system. It is defined by the presence of one or more opportun- istic illnesses due to decreased immunity.
