President’s Message

2

Hello Jaycees!April is an exciting month for our chapter. There are many projects that you can play a part in. On April 3rd our chapter is working at a concession stand at the MCI Center. This project helps fund the good works our chapter performs in the community. Please consider helping out; for more information please visit our website.

There are so many events this month - please come out and enjoy the company of your fellow Jaycees. We have four new members that I would like to introduce: Tiffany enjoys working with children and has a passion for sports, Jim recently moved to Alexandria and plans to get involved with our community, Christina found us on the Internet and is interested in professional and community development, Mike also found us on the Internet, he has extensive experience with civic groups. If you see our new members out this month, please welcome them into your group or social events. I welcome them to our chapter and wish them much success in the community. Joining the Jaycees will change your life.

I would really like to plug our fundraising efforts this year. The Financial Development Portfolio is the “ways and means” of our chapter. This portfolio is the grease that allows this chapter to operate. We are planning a summer-long series of yard sales and other

Member in the SpotlightName: Alexandra (Alex) AbrahamDate Joined: March 1995Occupation: Accountant/Event Planner (I use both sides of my brain!)

Age: 34 at the end of April

Why did you join the Jaycees? I joined the Jaycees to meet new people and to get involved in the community. What I do in my free time: What free time? I like to cook and entertain friends, hang out in Old Town, go antiquing, play golf, and I’m a big Orioles fan. I love to travel, but haven’t had much of a chance to do so lately. Favorite project: Red Cross Waterfront Festival. What’s the best thing about being a Jaycee? Through the Jaycees, I’ve made so many wonderful friends and really feel like I am part of the Alexandria community. It has helped me tremendously with professional development, and people always have a very positive response when I mention I am a member of the Jaycees.

fundraisers. Please come out and support Larry, Lori and Mike as they discover new and inventive ways to raise money.

Every one of you joined this chapter for a reason, was it to meet new people, was it to meet that special someone, was it to serve your community? For what ever reason you joined, please come out and discover the Jaycees. You can service your community and have fun in the process. The great thing about our organization is that there is so much to do and so little time to do it in!

My thanks this month to Cindy Hauser, Larry Radford, Sharon Sobel, Cathy Lada, Kristie Kehoe, Dr. Bill Incatasciato, Laura Murphy, Sharon Trader, Stacy Hickman, all my Directors and many, many others who make this chapter function.

Peace.

Helping the Homeless Has Never Been So Much Fun!Be a Part of the 3rd Annual Carpenter’s Cook-off!

“Service to humanity is the best work of life!” If you are a Jaycee, show that you believe this line in our Creed by volunteering Sunday, May 1 from 12 – 3 PM at The Birchmere for The “Carpenter’s Cook-off,” an annual fundraising event for the Car-penter’s Shelter, Northern Virginia’s largest homeless shelter.

Participants will spend the afternoon dining on de-licious fare prepared by some of the area’s finest chefs…and all to help Carpenter’s Shelter be “more than just a roof” to more than 1,000 homeless and formerly homeless children, families, and adults each year.

This third annual event centers around a casual, informal, buffet-style Sunday afternoon of dining on delectable creations from Northern Virginia’s finest chefs. The event will include tastings from restaurants such as Mango Mike’s, Blue Point Grille, Hollin Hall Bakery, Union Street Pub House, and other Alexan-dria establishments.

Although tickets normally go for $35/person, Jay-cees who volunteer to work one or more shifts at the Cook-off will get in for free. Enjoy food tastings, hear live entertainment by The Melonheads, receive a free souvenir cookbook, and participate in a live auction if you desire. Volunteers also receive a special volunteer button. Our exact duties are still to be determined, but they will probably include taking tickets, helping the restaurants, etc. The event takes place on Sunday, May 1, 2005 from 12 – 3 PM at The Birchmere, 3701 Mt. Vernon Ave, Alexandria, VA. At least 15-20 volunteers are needed. To sign up, contact Kristie Kehoe at (703) 768-8046 or [email protected].

Individual Development Get Noticed by a Potential EmployerThe job market in the DC area is highly competitive - U.S. Census data shows that residents (and there-fore, job applicants!) in this area hold more advanced degrees than in many other areas around our country.

So, how can you get noticed by a potential employer - whether you have an advanced degree or not?

You’ll have two opportunities in April to work with a seasoned human resources professional to optimize your résumé and practice your interviewing skills.

Please join us April 4 from 7-8:30 PM for Winning Résumés and April 26 from 7-8:30 PM for Interview-ing Successfully, both part of the Keys to Success: Career Series.

We’ll be at the Beatley Central Library Community Room (5005 Duke Street, Alexandria).

Winning Résumés - April 4Be sure to bring your résumé along - this is a hands-on, practical seminar.

Whether you’re looking for your next job or happy where you are, having an up-to-date and well-written résumé is es-sential.

Learn: what prompts a potential employer to call how to highlight your accomplishments how to position yourself for promotion

Interviewing Successfully - April 26You know what your strengths are - but do you know how to share them during an interview in a way that makes the potential employer sit up and say, “wow!”?

Learn: how to prepare for your best interview how to showcase your strengths using the H-PAR technique (History, Problem, Action, and Resolution) how asking the right questions sets you apart from the crowd - and what to ask

The best way to learn about interviewing successfully is to practice what you’ve learned, so be prepared for some interactive learning - whether actively listening or actively modeling the techniques if you’re comfortable doing so.

Our presenter for both of these seminars is Shira Harrington. Since 1994, Shira Harrington, Senior Recruiting Consultant with Positions Inc., has helped candidates and client companies find each other. Shira special-izes in placing administrative and mid-senior level professionals for a range of DC area employers. She is the Programs Chair for the Human Resource Association of the National Capital Area, and an active member of the Finance & Administration Roundtable, and the Po-tomac Employers Roundtable.

65 Years of the Alexandria Jaycees: Part 3The Alexandria Jaycee Women

By Wendy Boone, Alexandria Jaycee Keyman and Past President, Alexandria Jaycee Women

Once upon a time, there was the Alexandria Jaycees and the Alexandria Jaycee Women. It was not until the mid 1980s that the two became one. Here’s how it happened.

In the early years of the Jaycee organization, all the members were men. Some of the chapters had auxiliaries of the members’ wives, but there were no single women involved.

In the 1970s, however, an organization called the Jayceettes joined the Jaycees as a parallel

organization that admitted all women. The two organizations ran state meetings jointly and worked together on many projects. But the women’s organization had its own agenda with a focus on women’s issues and programs, and was every bit as strong and vital as the men’s organization.

In November of 1981, the Alexandria Jaycees approved forming a Jaycee Women chapter with the help of the Arlington Jaycee Women and the state Jaycee and Jayceette organizations. In December 1981, the final extension meeting was held.

We chartered with 7 members: 5 officers and 2 regular members. We received our State Charter at Winter Board 1982 and on March 6th, our first Charter Night was held with the Alexandria Jaycees and Arlington Jaycee Women, and the new officers were installed by the Regional Director. (I want to add here that new organizations had a choice of calling themselves Jaycee Women or Jayceettes.)

Celebrating 65 Years in 2005

Our first year was exciting and definitely challenging! This was the year of the first Red Cross Waterfront Festival, which we almost turned down due to another commitment, but were finally able to do. Our first Community Service projects included: Cakes for Firemen (taking goodies to a local firehouse to show our appreciation for their work); Thanksgiving Baskets; Raffle for the Disabled; and making Christmas ornaments for patients at Alexandria Hospital.

The two Ways and Means projects we used to raise money were Topless Carwashes (We washed from the windows down and the top was extra. Ha! I know what you were thinking!) and Flower Bulb Sales.

We also did many Jaycee “assists.” We helped sell tickets at the Scottish Games, helped sell beer and chili at the Kidney Foundation Chili Cook-off, held a Family Picnic, and my personal favorite, acted in the Haunted House.

Our Individual Development portfolio included Speakup and Springboard; the Dynamics Series (communications,

leadership, etc.); and Today’s Woman (self esteem, rape awareness, etc.)... and, YES, WE PARTIED with everything from a Jaycee Appreciation Party to a Superbowl Party to our First Anniversary Party!

By the end of our first year, the Alexandria Jaycee Women were a force to be reckoned with. We appeared twice in the Alexandria Gazette with Major Charles Beatley: once in his office discussing plans and once at our Haunted House, where the Mayor and several city officials were our special guests. At the Virginia Jaycees State Convention, we received many awards, including Outstanding First Year Chapter and Outstanding Newsletter. (continued on page 9)

65 Years (continued)Our Jaycee Women chapter flourished for another year and a half. In 1985, three young women (not from Alexandria) wanted to join a Jaycee chapter and couldn’t. They took their gripe all the way to the Supreme Court. The Court decision forced Jaycee chapters to admit women, whether they wanted to or not. This began a very emotion-packed period in the history of the U.S. Jaycees and the Jaycee Women. Should there be one organization or two?

Slowly, chapters throughout the country merged together, one by one. Today, having a joint organization seems second nature. It was a while before it really worked and everyone was ok with the situation. (Some were never ok with it.) But it helped our chapter out a lot that we had members who just happened to be married to each other. My husband, Dan, and I were presidents together. We were the first Alexandria Jaycee couple! Then there was Jerry and Sylvia Terlitsky and many others since, whose marriages would not have happened if it weren’t for the Alexandria Jaycees. I sincerely hope that this trend continues, because it’s a lot of fun to be JAYCEES TOGETHER!

FinancialSo Many Hard Times, We Had to Have Yard Sales

In April, we’re having Hard Times -- for dinner that is. Financial Direc-tor Mike McCollum has arranged for Alexandria’s own Hard Times Cafe to throw a benefi t dinner for our chapter on Thursday, April 14.

It’s simple: On April 14th come out to have dinner with your friends at the Old Town location of Hard Times Cafe (1404 King Street) and give the wait staff our Jaycee fl yer. The fl yer means 20 percent of your bill will go toward our chapter. You have a great meal and help the chapter in one fell swoop.

While there attend our Financial Portfolio meeting and learn how you can raise money to support your projects. Yep, the Financial Portfolio will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 pm, April 14 at the Hard Times Cafe.

April 3rd, Jaycess will staff a concession stand at the MCI Center as the Washington Wizards beat the Indi-ana Pacers. You must be TIPS Trained. Volunteer by emailing me at [email protected].

April 9th, the Jaycees again take to the MCI Center to serve cold colas and hot chicken tenders to patrons at the Washington Wizards game. Report time is 5 PM. You must be TIPS Trained. Volunteer by emailing me.

Yard Sales are tentatively scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 16th but Dr. Bill is still confi rming

the location. Watch this space for a complete run-down of all our sales. So come out and support the chapter. After all, if you don’t, who will?

June 28 Book Club: Portrait of a Killer, by Patricia Cornwell. “The identity of [Jack the Rip-per] has remained one of the world’s greatest unsolved mysteries, and a wealth of theories have been posited. Using her formidable range of forensic and technical skills, Patricia Cornwell has applied the rigorous discipline of 21st century police investigation to the extant material, and here presents the hard evidence that the perpetrator of the Whitechapel Murders was the world famous artist, Walter Sickert.”
