Why choose this subject?
If you find the most interesting things in the world are the thoughts and actions of people in it, then History is for you. By developing your powers of analysis and reasoning you will be preparing yourself for your place in the modern world. You will handle information critically, interpret a wide range of evidence and bring perception to the motives that drive people.
Entry requirements: 'B' in History and grade 6 in English Language GCSE
Combine this course with: English Literature, Law, Maths, Computing, a Language, Economics, Media Studies.
Essential if you go on to: Law, Journalism, Management or Teaching.
Course Description
We study AQA GCE History
The course is assessed in 3 components, taught across 2 years. Component 1 is a Breadth Study assessed by a written paper worth 40%. Component two is a Depth Study assessed through a written paper worth 40%. Finally students also complete a coursework unit in Year 13, worth 20%, in which pupils complete an independent historical investigation (3,500 – 4000 word essay)
The Breadth study is designed to allow pupils to study in breadth issues of change, continuity, cause and consequence across 100 years of history. The Depth study allows pupils to study a period of major change in depth, focusing on events, ideas and developments.

Students develop an understanding and a sound knowledge of modern British and Chinese History. They consider the nature of historical sources and the methods used by historians. Students also develop a familiarity with differing interpretations of particular historical problems.

The course is assessed through one examination paper. That is worth 60% of the total A2 mark. Module 4 is a historical enquiry undertaken by students which is worth 40% of the total A2 mark
