History Victorians – Rich and Poor Lives Once again we will be making links to Oliver Twist. We will be studying the contrasting lifestyles of rich and poor members of Victorian society with specific focus on life within Workhouses contrasted with the opulence of The Great Exhibition of 1851. Science Ourselves – Staying Healthy This half term we will be linking our Science topic to our Literacy text by examining the subject of the human body and how to keep it healthy. We will be studying conditions in Victorian society which were detrimental to staying healthy. PE Striking and Fielding Games Class 5 will be studying different games that involve striking and fielding. We will learn the skills for effectively striking balls/objects and effective ways to throw and catch these balls/objects. Art Portraits Again linking to Oliver Twist, Class 5 will be creating portraits influenced by prominent Victorian artists Philip Webb and William Morris. RE Communication We will be learning how religious ideas and messages are communicated. We will be principally studying communication within the Christian faith but also making links to similarities and differences in communication within different faith groups. We are focusing on times tables facts. Year 5 pupils should know all facts up to the 12 x table as well as corresponding division facts (i.e. 7 x 9 = 63 therefore 63 / 9 = 7). There is a section on the Maths blog which links to times tables activities and tests to help learn these facts at home. PHSE Anti-Bullying Our new PHSE topic is Anti- Bullying. We will be learning about how to recognise and define bullying as well as how to effectively combat the problem. We will be specifically studying the issue of cyber-bullying. Mathletics Every Monday our homework is to score a minimum of 1,000 points on the Mathletics website which will earn each pupil a certificate. The points can be accumulated all week and the weekly deadline is on Sunday. Literacy Oliver Twist All our Literacy lessons will be themed around the book Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. We will be studying Charles Dickens as a significant author and prominent member of Victorian society. We will also be studying the language and themes contained within Dickens’ classic text.
