Plaza Olivia Salamanca The plaza was named in honor of Dr. Olivia Salamanca M.D, one of the first Filipino women doctors. Dr. Salamanca was born in San Roque, Cavite on July 1889 and appointed was appointed as a government scholar in 1905; she studied in Drexel Institute, Philadelphia. She was the first US- trained Filipina doctor who served as the first secretary of the Philippine Anti-tuberculosis Society. The plaza was built in recognition of her unselfish dedication in providing medical care to the city’s poor and her pioneering effort of inspiring women to compete in the male-dominated professional field. The redevelopment of the new plaza Salamanca was done by the city government under the “Buhayin ang Maynila program” during the Atienza’s administration.
