1966 is where it all started……..

1966 – LC Research and Development Group of Varian was formed

LC Development and Innovation took place every 1 to 3 years.

In the early years this was mainly by product development

In later years this has been mainly by acquisition

History of Varian HPLC Products

1967 – Model 4000 Gas Displacement Pump and Micro-adsorption detector (MAD)


1968 – Varian purchased LC Division of Picker-Nuclear (Dedicated Nucleotide Analyzer, LCS-1000, 254 nm UV detector.

1971 – Model 4200 Gradient Elution Chromatograph (syringe pump), Variscan Scanning UV Detector (Techtron – Melbourne)


1974 - Model 8500 HPLC syringe pump, RI detector, 8000 AutoSampler for HPLC, CDS 101


1976 – Varichrom Variable Wavelength UV-Vis detector (Cary)

2nd Generation CDS System, with system control!


1977 – Fluorichrom filter fluorimeter


5000 series HPLC pump, major step forward• 5010 Isocratic analog pump

• 5020 Binary gradient computer controller

1984 – 9090 low loss variable volume AutoSampler, 2010 Isocratic pump, 2020 Gradient controller, 2050 Programmable UV-Vis detector, 2070 Monochrometer based Fluorescence detector (all from Jasco)


1985 – PolyChrom 9060 Diode Array Detector, AASP Automated solid phase extraction system

( Online SPE!!!)


1986 – CM-1 conductivity detector (OEM), DS-604 GPC calculation software

1987 – RI-4 (OEM from ERC in Japan), 2500 Isocratic pump, 2502 Isocratic pump and gradient controller, 2550 time programmable UV-Vis detector (Jasco)


1988 – Star 9010 ternary gradient pump, 9050 time programmable UV-Vis detector, 9095 High Performance AutoSampler, 9065 Diode Array detector, 9020 Windows based HPLC workstation


1989 – LC Workstation Rev C, SP-99 column oven (Spark Holland)

1990 – 3D View for PolyView, PCR carbamate system (Pickering), 9001 Isocratic pump, Marathon AutoSampler (Spark Holland)

1991 – 9070 Fluorescence Detector (Linear, Spectra Physics, Thermo), 9100 Cooled AutoSampler

1992 – MCA for PolyView

1993 – 9012/9002 extended flow range pumps, Mistral oven (Spark Holland), Electric 9100

1995 – Star 9080 Electrochemical detector ( Antec), Star 9040 RI detector (ERC), Star control of 9200 and 9300

1998 – ProStar product line ( combines Rainin and Varian products), ProStar 330 Photodiode Array (Hitachi) PolyView 2000

1999 – ProStar 500 CVM, Helix system

2000 – ProStar 363 Fluorescence detector, Varian buys Van Kel, Varian buys R&S, 520 Oven


2001 – PrepStar SD-2, PrepStar 530, Responder software, Helix 364 Fluorescence software, Star Reviewer for dHPLC, Polaris Educational systems

2003 – ProStar 325 UV/Vis detector
