PRESIDENT REPORT

Before you read to the end, does anybody know what themain ingredient of WD-40 is?

Don't lie and don't cheat. WD-40. Who knew? I had a neighbor who had bought a new pickup. I got up very early one Sunday morning and saw that someone had spray painted red all around the sides of this beige truck (for some unknown reason). I went over, woke him up, and told him the bad news. He was very upset and was trying to figure out what to do probably nothing until Monday morning, since nothing was open. Another neighbor came out and told him to get his WD-40 and clean it off. It removed the unwanted paint beautifully and did not harm his paint job that was on the truck. I'm impressed! WD-40 who knew? 'Water Displacement #40' The product began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and deg reaser to protect missile parts. WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a 'water displacement' compound. They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD-40. The Convair Company bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts. Ken East (one of the original founders) says there is nothing in WD-40 that would hurt you. When you read the 'shower door' part, try it. It's the first thing that has ever cleaned that spotty shower door.. If yours is plastic, it works just as well as glass. It's a miracle! Then try it on your stove top .... Viola! It's now shinier than it's ever been. You'll be amazed. Here are some other uses: 1. Protects silver from tarnishing.2. Removes road tar and grime from cars.3. Cleans and lubricates guitar strings.4. Gives floors that 'just-waxed' sheen without making them slippery.5. Keeps flies off cows.6. Restores and cleans chalkboards.7. Removes lipstick stains.

8. Loosens stubborn zippers.9. Untangles jewelry chains.10. Removes stains from stainless steel sinks.11. Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill.12. Keeps ceramic/terra cotta garden pots from oxidizing.13. Removes tomato stains from clothing.14. Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots.15. Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors.16. Keeps scissors working smoothly.17. Lubricates noisy door hinges on vehicles and doors in homes.18. It removes black scuff marks from the kitchen floor! Use WD-40 for those nasty tar and scuff marks on flooring. It doesn't seem to harm the finish and you won't have to scrub nearly as hard to get them off. Just remember to open some windows if you have a lot of marks.19. Bug guts will eat away the finish on your car if not removed quickly! Use WD-40!20. Gives a children's playground gym slide a shine for a super fast slide.21. Lubricates gear shift and mower deck lever for ease of handling on riding mowers.22. Rids kids rocking chairs and swings of squeaky noises.23. Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and makes them easier to open.24. Spraying an umbrella stem makes it easier to open and close.25. Restores and cleans padded leather dashboards in vehicles, as well as vinyl bumpers.26. Restores and cleans roof racks on vehicles.27. Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans.28. Lubricates wheel sprockets on tricycles, wagons, and bicycles for easy handling.29. Lubricates fan belts on washers and dryers and keeps them running smoothly.30. Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades, and other tools.31. Removes splattered grease on stove.32. Keeps bathroom mirror from fogging.33. Lubricates prosthetic limbs.34. Keeps pigeons off the balcony (they hate the smell).35. Removes all traces of duct tape.36. Folks even spray it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain.

PRESIDENTS REPORTcontinued

June was a quiet month for most of the Empire members. A few of the boys went to Ford Carlisle. I got some great pictures of Galaxies from Gary Posch who was there. He brought the family although his son had to stay in the hotel and study for the regents tests. Thanks Gary. Now that’s a car family ----- If you wonder why there is a 64 Galaxie in this month’s 65 Galaxie edition it is because I promised Syd Jensen that I would feature his 64 in last month’s edition. Unfortunately, by the time I got the mail we had already gone to press. Better late than never Syd.

The June meeting was well attended with about fifteen members. We had a visitor who is a going to be a member as soon as we can process his application. The club is alive and growing with more and more members volunteering for duties that keep us healthy and dynamic. The main topic was the July meeting at Pete’s house. This is a family BBQ and you are invited to bring your family or favorite guest. We know that Pete will be able to accommodate the club at his estate in Eastport. Last

year’s food and fun will be hard to beat. A lot of folks have been asking to bring their specialty dessert of dish. You can call or email me if you have a specialty you want to bring. This is not a prerequisite to coming. The club is supplying the food. I will be contacting each member for a count of responders and we will coordinate that with you then. On the topic of t-shirts and jackets, we will be negotiating with vendors for a price on jackets. First we have to decide which style jacket the club will use. We are leaning towards a Lee denim jacket with logo on the back and club name over the left pocket. Our present vender is accepting orders of 10 at a time. I am sure we will be getting more then ten jackets for the fall and summer nights. We will have to wait to get the 10 shirt requests before we can send in the order.Remember the July meeting is at Pete’s house July 18…Directions are in this edition. See you there

37. Florida 's favorite use is: 'cleans and removes love bugs from grills and bumpers.'38. The favorite use in the state of New York , WD-40 protects the Statue of Liberty from the elements.39. WD-40 attracts fish. Spray a little on live bait or lures and you will be catching the big one in no time. Also, it's a lot cheaper than the chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose. Keep in mind though, using some chemical laced baits or lures for fishing are not allowed in some states.40. Use it for fire ant bites. It takes the sting away immediately and stops the itch.

41. WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray on the mark and wipe with a clean rag.42.. Also, if you've discovered that your teenage daughter has washed and dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, saturate the lipstick spots with WD-40 and rewash. Presto! The lipstick is gone!43. If you sprayed WD-40 on the distributor cap, it would displace the moisture and allow the car to start. P. S. The basic ingredient is - FISH OIL . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_oil

Meeting Minutes

Bill Carberry called the meeting to order with fourteen (14) members in attendance, including John Haas, Dennis Donovan, Tony Paone, Pete Angell, Andy Turano, Pete Cassola, Brian Gerken, Bill O’Rourke, George and Tom Holt, Gary Williams, Syd Jensen, and Marcus Weisgerber.

The first topic of discussion was next month’s meeting and barbeque at Pete Angell’s place in Eastport on July 18th. Bill polled members present at the meeting as to attendance at next month’s barbeque in order to get a head count for food and beverages. All members agreed that club funds will cover basic food and supply needs, while each member/family will bring a dessert, salad, or some other contribution for the meeting. Because the Wicks Road show was a washout due to weather (and thus the Empire Galaxie meeting was cancelled) beverages slated for that event will be used next month at the BBQ. Directions to Eastport and further details about the BBQ are to follow. In the event of inclement weather, members will bring ‘easy up’ tents to keep us dry.

Next, Bill discussed upcoming events and shows, to include the Gold Coast Cruisers Car Show by the Water (Morgan Park, Glen Cove) on 6/28 (with rain date 7/5) and LISRA’s Vineyard Run on 7/19. For the Morgan Park show, Bill will be submitting an application for pre-registration for the Empire Galaxies, and members who will attend the show with their cars will meet up at approximately 8am to enter the show together. The LISRA Vineyard Run will stage at the Manorville King Kullen/McDonald’s parking lot (Exit 70 off of the LIE) at approximately 9:30am on 7/19. Bill plans to attend.

Other notable dates/shows are the Syosset Ford show (also on 7/19), the 8/2 Sayville Street Fair and car show, and the Boulevard Bombers 1st Annual Riff Raff Riot car and bike show at the Shy Lounge in Levittown on 7/26. Bill noted that the Old Time Drags at Englishtown, NJ also falls on 7/26. Bill, Dennis, and Brian are planning to attend (and race), and other members are hoping to attend as well to witness the showdown(s).

Bill and Andy then discussed next year’s President’s Council meeting, to be held in February 2009. As that meeting will be hosted by the Empire Galaxies, Bill and Andy are exploring venues that are suitable to

Recorded by: Pete Angell

accommodate the number of people/clubs that will be in attendance. One such venue is the Knights of Columbus hall on Route 109 in Babylon.

1965 Galaxieowned by Gene Kennedy

Backing out of the gargae the brake pedal went to the floor, just like my ‘65 Hardtop did a few years before. With my trusty vise-grip pliers I cut out the rear brakes. Kelly came out with enough brake fluid to fill the master cylinder. With my friend Tom Wagner we towed the car with my ’79 Mustang 2.3 Pace Car over 20 miles thru Queens to my house. The tow rope only broke twice. The car is pretty well finished and detailed. The engine now runs great and the oil light no longer glows red (no I didnt remove the bulb) On a trip to Orient Point I actually got 18.3 MPG.

1965 Ford Galaxie 500XL 2 Door Convertible. Owner Gene Kennedy - 289 CID - 200HP w/ 2bbl carb. & dual exhaust!Cruise-O-Matic - Bucket seats w/ console (black) Ragoon Red exerior P/B, P/S, WSW, Courtesy lights, Heater, Radio B.U. lights, 2 sp. W. Washers, Clock. Est Cost New approx $3700.

My search for this car took me to Belle Harbor, Queens. The owner’s name was Kelly which I thought was a good start being one of my Lonsman. kelly found a battery and we put it in, hooked a jumper to the coil, pushed the doorbell button we found on the console and got it started. The engine sounded good, but the oil light on the dash was glowing bright red, but I knew it was not a problem. It was obvious to me this car needed me.

Looking through the glove boz I found the original owners manual, warranty card and the registration (1979) all in the name of the original owner.

The car was purchased from Plainview Ford. Kelly never registered it and neglected to ask him how long he had owned it. It appeared that it was indoors most of the time, because it had the original top, excellent original black interior and perfect floors. I did not make Kelly an offer but told him I would call him as soon as I could make room. Some of my friends were interested. A while later Kelly called me back and I offered $500. He said he would like $700. I said, slit the difference - $600 -- such a bargain!

The 1965 Ford was a whole new design change for the Galaxie. This new car consisted of six series of Galaxies, with 17 models. This new wider design was a big change from the 1964 models. A notable difference was the new dual vertical stacked headlight design, a first for the Galaxie. Although different, these cars attracted a following of their own. These were designed for total performance with a large array of performance choices. Ford offered the Galaxie 500LTD, Galaxie 500XL, in convertible and hardtop, Galaxie 500 and Ford Custom which was the base model for the 1965 full size car line. Ford offered five engine choices from the 240 cubic inch six cylinder all the way up to the very rare fire breathing 427 Thunderbird High Performance

optional V-8 your choice of either four or eight venturi carburetion rated at 425 horsepower. For transmission options, Ford used the Synchro Smooth Drive manual transmission, four speed floor shift offered on 390 and 427 engines, and Cruise-O-Matic three speed automatic transmission. Some of the available options for 1965 were as follows: Power Brakes, Power Front Seats, Automatic Speed Control, Remote Mirrors, Swing Away Steering Wheel, Power Windows, Air Conditioning, Padded Dash and Visors, Wire Wheel Covers, Vinyl Roof Covering, and Remote Trunk Release. The 1965 Galaxie introduced a new age of full size Ford with fresh new looks and performance and luxury to match.

The 1965 Ford Galaxie 500XL was a continuation of the sporty Galaxie 500 sub-series in the first new big-Ford generation since 1960. The 1965s boasted more angular styling (announced by stacked quad headlamps), a sturdier new frame derived from stock-car racing experience, Ford's first-ever coil-spring rear suspension, stronger front suspen-sion hardware, and tighter rear-axle location via twin control arms, a single lateral member, and a Panhard rod.Classic Cars Image Gallery 1965 Ford Galaxie 500XL convertible. The 500XL bodies were stronger, too, and fewer attachment points reduced noise. That led Ford to advertise its 1965s as "quieter than a Rolls-Royce," a claim made mainly for the new limousine-like LTD hardtop sedan. Even so, Ford's big 1965 stockers gave the division its best-ever NASCAR season, winning 48 of the 55 scheduled Grand National events. The XLs retained a sporty buckets-and-console interior a la 1962-1964, and offered power options up to a 410-horse 427; the new free-revving small-block "Challenger 289" was standard. A manual four-speed was still available with the big mills, but most XLs continued to be built with the trusty 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic. The mildly facelifted 1966’s gained "7-Litre" companions, the name referring to metric displace-ment of their standard "428" V-8. This engine was actually closer to 427 cid, but it was designed for low-speed torque, not high-rpm performance, and was thus named to avoid confusion. Despite two-ton heft, these Fords could be quite fast, and were rewarding to drive

in most any form. Their declining popularity in these years reflects less on their abilities than the market's growing preference for the even speedier mid-size muscle machines then appearing. Last month we spotlighted the 1964 Galaxie and I promised Syd Jensen that I would use his car as the cover car. Unfortunately we had to go to press before Syd could get me any information and a picture. Well, this is make-up time. Syd has been a member of Empire Galaxies form just about the beginning of the club. He bought his first Ford new in 1951 for about $1900.00. It was a V8 with a stick shift and overdrive. He sold that one for new Mercury in early 1952. That one cost him about $2150.00. The love affair continued to one day a few years ago he saw a 1964 Galaxie Four door at a Carlisle Pa. show. It had a 352 with Cruisamatic transmission. He liked the car enough to fly to Pitts-burg, bought the car for $9500. 00 (Six times the price he paid for his first new car) and drove it home. The

beautiful blue XL has an equally beautiful blue interior. There is a good bad story in that. The bad was that the car was hit in the rear and sustained enough damage that when it was done over it came home even more beautiful than when he bought it. Did I mention the car had 13,000 original miles? One thing that was lacking in the car was air conditioning. Who do we know who could put an air conditioner in any car? That’s right. Bill, “Mr. Cap A Radiator” Took a genuine Ford A/C out of another car and installed it for Syd. There’s another 64 Galaxie in Syd’s toy chest. This one is a yellow convertible with black vinyl interior. Both cars run superbly and the convertible will be the topic for another article.

Many people seem confused as to the best way to flush out the cooling system in their classic car or truck. Most people agree that reverse flushing is the best way to go about it but may not know how to achieve a true reverse flush. Reverse flushing will tend to push out most debris that builds up in coolant passages especially those of the radiator and heater core. I will try to explain in the simplest terms how get the desired results. The layout of compo-nents that I am using in this procedure will be consistent with what will be found in most vintage V-8 engines and even most 4 & 6 cylinders. Let’s start with how the antifreeze/coolant mixture goes through your cooling system under normal operating conditions. The easiest place to start and also to remember the flow pattern is that heat rises. Hot fluid will leave the engine at the thermostat housing. On most vintage vehicles this is the highest point on the engine except of course for the carburetor. If you can’t tell the difference between a carburetor and a thermostat housing please proceed to your nearest repair shop to have any and all work done on your car by some one else. From the thermo-stat housing the fluid goes through the upper radiator hose to the radiator. This may seem rather simple and basic to most of you but please be patient while I go through the motions anyway. Once in the radiator the fluid gets cooled off as it passes through the core portion of the radiator. This is the part with the tubes and fins. Heat transfers from the fluid, to the tubes, to the fins and the fins get cooled off by the air passing thru the radiator. After being cooled off the fluid is then sucked back into the engine by the water pump. It is at this point that a lot of people are not sure which way the fluid flows. The water pump actually pushes the fluid through the engine block from front to back. In fact there are many head gaskets that have small or no coolant passages in the front of the gasket just for the purpose of forcing the coolant to the rear of the block. Once at the back the fluid goes up to the cylinder head(s) and starts to go back to the front of the engine through the heads themselves. On a typical V-8 the fluid from both heads will then flow together again in the front of the intake manifold and out the thermostat housing to start the journey all over again. Since the fluid is at it’s hottest at the thermostat area this is also the best place to tap into to the circuit for some much needed heat in the cold winter months. Most manu-

facturers have the hose that feeds the heater core start very close to the thermostat but not all do, so you may need to think and search a little if yours is not the norm. And remember you can always go back to the basic scientific law that heat rises. As the fluid goes to the heater core it may or may not go through a heater control valve. This varies from car maker to car maker and even model to model from the same car maker. Once the fluid is in the heater core it actually acts as a miniature radiator and cools off the fluid by transferring the heat from the fluid to the air that passes through it. Only this time we want that heated up air to warm up our fingers & toes. After the fluid has gone through the heater core and lost most of its heat it gets sucked back to the engine through the heater return hose to the water pump. Yup, just like the radiator gives up its coolant to the water pump, so does the heater core. Again, this description applies to most common V-8 engines because I need to stick to something that most of you are familiar with without getting into a description of how newer vehicles and cooling systems are designed. Okay, now that we know how the normal flow of things goes we can do some preventive maintenance on our pride and joy by throwing it in reverse. It would be best to start this procedure when the engine is not hot so you don’t waste time going to the emergency room with some serious burns. Draining the cooling system of its existing coolant is the best place to start but not really required. Of course you should drain it into a drain pan for proper disposal at the end of your busy day. But do be sure that there is no pressure in the system. Now you should remove the heater return hose from either the water pump or the heater outlet tube. You will want to go into either the hose or the heater core so that you are forcing water to go backwards through the heater core. If you choose to remove the hose from the heater core be sure to use extreme caution so you don’t create the problem of a leaking heater core. Slicing the hose and peeling it off the heater neck will usually assure no heater core problems. In fact now might be a good time to replace the heater hoses anyway. There are many “Reverse Flush Kits” for sale in just about every auto parts store and most might work just fine. I use a home-made flush gun that combines water and air pressure to force the fresh water into the system

and all the old stuff out. See picture # XX. If you discon-nected the hose from the heater core you will need a scrap piece of hose to connect from the flush gun to the heater core. If you took the heater return hose off at the water pump just put the flush gun into the hose and clamp it with a hose clamp. Now you need to block off the opening just created by your flush gun hook-up. Any simple thing will work since it is only temporary. You can even stick an old spark plug in the hose and clamp it if you have to. Now that you are ready to push all the old fluid out you need to give it an exit. Let’s go through the system backwards and see where we end up. Through the heater core (backwards), into the engine near the thermostat housing, backwards through the cylinder head(s) and engine block to the water pump, out the lower radiator hose and into the lower neck of the radiator. The fluid will then go backwards through the radiator tubes and come out the top neck of the radiator. This is where all the old stuff will come out. We have now gone backwards through the heater core, engine and radiator. This is a true reverse flush. Remove the upper radiator hose from either the upper neck of the radiator or at the thermostat housing. If you choose to leave the hose connected to the radiator you might want to rotate it so it points down into a drain pan to catch the old stuff. As far as the other opening, you won’t need to do anything as long as there is a thermostat in place and it is closed as it should be with a cooled off engine. The closed thermostat will prevent your flushing procedure from turning into a messy shower for you. If the thermostat is stuck open now would be a good time to change that too. If you don’t use a thermostat for whatever reason you will need to plug up the housing to prevent the aforementioned shower. The final things to check before starting the flush are that you put the radiator cap back on and the drain plug on the radiator is closed. Another very important thing to check is that if your car has a heater control valve it is now in the hot or open position. Failure to do this can cause excessive pressure build-up in your heater core which may very well cause it to leak. Very slowly open the valve on your source of fresh water and make sure that you get fluid coming out of the top of the radiator. If you don’t you either have a major blockage in the heater

core, the heater valve is closed or you have no water pressure in your hose. The fluid will come out whatever color it originally started out at and will gradually change to clear as all the old fluid is replaced with clean fresh water. Assuming you have good flow out of your system you can now add just a little bit of air pressure (if you are using a flush gun like I have shown). I will repeat, just a LITTLE bit of air pressure. You only want to give it enough air pressure to create some bubbling activity in the cooling system to help loosen up any sediment or blockages. Once again I cannot stress the importance of proper disposal of your old dirty coolant. Please check with your local municipality for the acceptable methods in your area. Ok, now you have a cooling system that is free of all the old antifreeze and hopefully all or most of the other undesirable sediments that have accumulated over the years. Now you can disconnect your flush hose from the engine but do not hook up the heater hose to the engine just yet. You also want to drain out as much of the clean water from the system as possible so open the radiator drain plug to drain the radiator all the way down. After the radiator is empty and you have closed the drainplug (try not to forget this part) you can start putting in fresh antifreeze. But wait, the heater hose is not hooked up yet. No, I didn’t forget. If you leave the heater hose off the engine as you pour in the fresh antifreeze you can eliminate most of the air pocket in the engine to make for an easier and quicker warm-up. When you see liquid just start to come up out of the open heater hose fitting, stop adding antifreeze and hook up the heater hose. Now you can fill up the rest of the way with antifreeze. A little information here about antifreeze and the proper mix. Some people think that more is better, not so. Try to get as close as possible to a 50/50 mix. If you are in a climate with severe cold temperatures you can go as far as 65% antifreeze and 35% water. Any higher percent-age of antifreeze is a waste of money and actually detrimental to the cooling system for at least two reasons. Reason #1; at extreme cold temps a 100% mix of antifreeze will actually start to jell up sooner than a proper mix. Reason #2; pure antifreeze will not dissipate heat in hot weather as well as a proper mix. Think of antifreeze like oil. You have many different types of oil, right? What is the difference between gear oil and motor

oil? Would you put motor oil in your differential or gear oil in your engine? Straight antifreeze would be too “thick” kind of like gear oil and will not transfer the heat out of the system the same as a proper mix will. On the sample vehicle we flushed the cooling system capacity as specified in the owners manual is 14 quarts. This comes out to 3 ½ gallons. Putting in two gallons of undiluted antifreeze will provide approximately a 60% antifreeze and 40% water mix. OK, the radiator is filled almost to the top, the heater hoses are hooked back up and the drainplug is closed, right? Time to start up the engine. Right after start-up the level in the radiator may drop down a bit. If so bring it back up to just below the filler neck and wait for the thermostat to open up. Just prior to the thermostat opening the coolant may rise & fall a bit and maybe even push out. Once the thermostat does open the level will drop and you can top it off. Since the engine will be warm/hot at this point you should fill the radiator right to the bottom edge of the filler neck and put on the radiator cap. If your car has an overflow tank you should fill that at least ½ way up so that as the engine cools it can draw coolant from the tank. Most 1960’s and older cars do not have a separate tank and should not be filled all the way to the top when cold. This lower level allows room for the coolant to expand and pressurize as the engine warms up. If you do fill one of these older cars all the way to the top when cold it will only push out the overflow until it finds its own level.

You have just performed a true reverse flush of your cooling system. Please remember that a cooling system flush is meant to prevent problems, not fix them. If your cooling system has been neglected and the radiator or heater core has become seriously clogged, a reverse flush probably will not solve your problem. A complete system flush every two years should prevent build-up in the system. Due to the many variations of different manufacturers cooling systems I may not have given a precise set of directions for your particular vehicle but these steps should apply to most classic cars & trucks.

Shop Talk

If you were to walk up to a typical New York executive in the early 1960s – think Don Draper in the AMC’s “Mad Men”—and tell him that GM Corp. would be in bankruptcy by 2009, he would have thought you were delusional, or perhaps a Communist. GM was more than just the world’s largest and most admired corporation; it was the final vindication for the American way, the perfected and even divinely inspired example of democratic capitalism that stood opposed to the airless atheism and nullity of the Soviet system. At the height of its power, GM represented 10% of the national economy. It controlled more than 50% of the light vehicle market. Its products, research, and management methodologies were the standard of the world. Along the way, GM had, rather accidentally, invented American consumerism. Long time chairman Alfred Sloan’s program of “Planned Obsolescence” – making annual often minor changes in the products, in such a way as to make last year’s model hopelessly unfashionable—put Americans on the acquisitive treadmill they are panting on yet today. Another of Sloan’s big ideas was the “Ladder of Success,” whereby the company’s brands—Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick and Cadillac—corresponded to ascending social status. A society obsessed with mobility had found its muse. The diversity of GM’s product offerings became a lens through which to diffract American life. Gm’s president once said “What is good for the country is good for GM and vise versa.

By Dan Neil LA Times ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------My only comment to the above is that we can only hope Ford doesn’t go the way of GM.
