• 1500’s--Tomato were brought to Naples, Italy

bread was sold on the streets of Italy.
--topped with olive oil and herbs.

• Late 1800’s--wealthy people began topping flat breads with tomatoes and cheese.
• Served as a first course followed by a pasta dish.

• Pizza shops--people loved to eat out. “Pizzeria”--Open air Everyone could get
exactly what they wanted on their flat breads.

Early 1900’s--Pizza arrived in the U.S.

POPULAR in the U.S. • During WWII many
soldiers fell in love with the Italian pizza.
• They brought it back with them.
• Wide spread opening of pizza parlors across the U. S.

• Early 1970’s--Americans began to develop their own types of pizza:
• Thick Chicago style deep dish
• Southwestern Tex-Mex
Pizza Hut
• Pizza Hut was the first chain restaurant to sell pizza in the
U. S.
• It originated in Wichita, Ks.
