Pampanga

• "Pampanga" comes from the word

“pangpang” meaning riverbank.

• a fitting name for a flat country

crisscrossed by a hundred small

branches of the Pampanga River.

• the first province and the

richest spoil created by theSpaniards in 1571.

Pampanga

• was re-organized as a province by

the Spaniards on December 11,

1571.

subdivided Pampanga into towns

(pueblos), which were further

subdivided into districts(barrios) and in some cases into

time and was founded in 1712.

• city's name is derived from theancient "balacat" trees which

were found abundantly in the

• English translation of Macabebe,

meaning: 'bordering the river 

banks' describes the historical

heritage of the ancient town

Kapampangans

Masantol

• second class municipality in

the province of Pampanga

• got its name from the fruit tree,

either because there was a

proliferation of santol trees in

the area, or because the town was

where santol fruits were heavily

bartered (Kapampangans being fond

of 'sinigang' dish).

Masantol 

• 'A Spanish missionary came to the town for the

first time. Upon reaching a roadside corner store,

he parked his horse-driven vehicle and inquired

from the store keeper the name of the place. A

middle-aged woman vendor, believing that the

Spanish priest was asking for the name of the

fruits she was selling, readily responded in broken

Spanish language, Padre, todos dulce Masantol. The

priest took from his pocket a pencil and a small

diary and wrote down the word mas santol, referring

to the name of the place he has visited. At the

time, the locality abounded with santol trees, and

santol fruits were in season when the priest

visited the place.'

Mexico

• own was renamed after Mexico, a

country in North America, after

being confused with its native

name "Masiku" which is oftentaken as "Elbowed" (elbowing

river: macasicung ilug)

• some theories attribute the name

to "Siku"; an Old Kapampangan

term for Chico or Sapodilla which

grew richly in the town
