History of Hyperboloid

Patented by FRB in 1960’s

Early 70’s: Original US Licensees: IEH, Smiths Interconnect, Curtiss-Wright

Today: Only Manufactures of Hyperboloid connectors are IEH and the divisions of Smiths (Hypertac Ltd, Hypertronics)

The Hyperboloid-shaped sleeve is formed by straight wires strung at an angle to the longitudinal axis. This geometry provides for a design which has a decreasing circumscribed circle when viewed from the entry

When the pin is inserted into this sleeve, the wires stretch, well within elastic limits, to accommodate it. In doing so, the wires wrap themselves around the pin, providing a number of continuous line contact paths

Hyperboloid Concept

Wires strung on an internal wire carrier (inner sleeve), and enclosed by a front outer ring (front sleeve) and the terminal. Joints are calculated interference fits, insuring gas-tight interfaces between all elements of the Hyperboloid construction

The unique geometry, precision processing, and careful attention to quality result in a highly desirable contact design which provides:

Hyperboloid Construction

Low Insertion/Extraction Forces

Feature Wire basket expands to envelop mating pin when

inserted.

Benefit Less resistance in pin-socket interface, thus less force

required to mate and demate, especially in high pin count connectors

Contact Life Feature

Unlike the “plow and scrape” action of common designs, Hyperboloid’s wiping action reduces wear on the contacts surfaces.

Benefit Standard contacts are rated to last 500 mating cycles. Hyperboloid contacts are rated for 100,000 mating

cycles.

Higher Current Ratings

Feature Hyperboloid wire system envelops mating pin, thus more

lines of contact between pin and socket

Benefit Greater current-carrying capability, at ambient temperature

rise

Page 11: History of Hyperboloid Hyperboloid Technology About IEH IEH Products Competitors Customers

Impervious to Shock & Vibration Feature

The low mass and resulting low inertia of the wires allows them to follow the most extreme excursions of the pin without loss of contact. Test exceed 300 g’s without discontinuity.

Benefit Guaranteed electrical continuity regardless of the direction

or intensity of external and internal forces.

Competitors

Very little overlap between IEH and Hypertronics product lines

As an M55302 QPL provider, IEH competes mainly with Airborn, Incon and Continental connector. IEH – Airborn comparison as follows:

Airborn W Series = IEH HGM Series Airborn RM2 and RM3 Series = IEH HRM Series Airborn RM4 Series = IEH HMM Series
