The BeginningIn 1877, Thomas Edison created the
phonograph, and successfully played “Mary Had A Little Lamb” using the device.
1878The first music was put on record with the
recording of Jules Levy performing “Yankee Doodle”.
1887Emile Berliner creates a flat-disc gramophone,
giving a possibility of multiple copies of a recording.
1888Edison creates an electrically-motored
phonograph.
1898Valdemar Poulsen patented his Telegraphone,
which used magnetic force on a on steel wire.
1901Audio recordings are made on motion picture
films.
1910Enrico Caruso is in the first live radio
broadcasting at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.
1913The first "talking movie" is created by
Thomas Edison using his Kinetophone, a cylinder player that was synchronized to the projector.
1919The Radio Corporation of America (RCA) is
founded.
1921The first commercial radio broadcast is made
in Pittsburgh, PA on AM radio.
1926O'Neill patented his idea for iron oxide-
coated paper tape.
1933Magnetic recording on steel wire is
developed commercially.The first inner-city stereo audio program is
broadcasted.
1936 The first tape recording of a concert by the
London Philharmonic Orchestra was recorded.
1940Walt Disney's eight track, "Fantasia", is
released.
1941Commercial FM broadcasting begins in
America.
1955Ampex develops the Selective Synchronous
Recording (or sel-sync)device.
1956Musician and song-writer, Les Paul, makes
the first 8-track record using the sel-sync method.
19783M introduces metal-particle cassette tape.
1980Sony produces a stereo cassette tape player
called a "Walkman."
1981Philips creates the Compact Disc (CD).
1982Sony releases the first CD player
1986Dr. Gunther Theile describes a sphere-shaped
microphone.
1996Record labels begin to add multimedia files
called enhanced CDs.
1999Audio DVD Standard 1.0 is agreed on.
